Mark Monroe was born in a one room log cabin on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. His family left the reservation for the prairie when he was still a youth. Monroe joined the army in 1949, serving in Korea where he was wounded in action. In the early 1980's, Monore started a nutrition program for Indians and other minority people with the support of the Presbyterian Hunger fund.
