Louis Owens was born in Lompoc, California of Choctaw, Cherokee and Irish American heritage. He grew up in Mississippi and California, and worked as a forest ranger and firefighter for the Forest Service. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of California and his Ph.D. in 1981 from the University of California, Davis. His career as an educator includes Fulbright lecturer in American literature at the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy; Professor of English at University of New Mexico, Albuquerque; Professor of Literature at University of California, Santa Cruz, and Professor of English, Native American Studies, and Director of the Creative Writing program at the University of California, Davis. He was also a member of several Native American Literary committees.

National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship, 1989.
Roman Noir Prize for Outstanding Mystery Novel, 1995 (for The Sharpest Sight)
The American Book Award, 1997 (for Nightland)
Wordcraft Circle Writer of the Year (Prose – Personal and Critical Essays) award, 1998 (for Mixblood Messages.)
