Santo Domingo water jar reinforced with rawhide thong

Santo Domingo -- Circa 1600 to 1880, Diameter 17 inches, 43 cm.

Storage jar , the neck reinforced with a rawhide thong. The two volutes are attached to vertical lines bounding a "path of the spirit" which extends throughout the decorated zone. The device is present, but not visible in the other specimens shown from Santo Domingo. Rain from the four cardinal directions is used in a design within two of the volutes.
