Incantations come from a traditional belief that words have the magical power to control events or individuals. They include taboos, greetings, verbal wishes, and magical phrases.

A catalog of "magical" artifacts from the collections of the University of Michigan collected in the Mediterranean basin and the Near East (1st to the 7th centuries A.D.). These items were believed by their cultures of origin to possess supernatural power when employed in ritual use or daily life.
