A MESSAGE TO GARCIA This book exemplifies what a Marine or any service member can truly be capable of with a great set of ethics. It shown service members that even in the face of fear anything can be accomplished; as well as, explained to civilians that these qualities can be used in an everyday basis. "A Message to Garcia" by Elbert Hubbard is based on an actual event in the Spanish-American War. The book is primarily about Lieutenant Andrew Rowan and his perseverance and obedience to all orders given even in the face of fear and other obstacles in his path. Rowan is willing to take on responsibilities and see them through to the end; He is the type of person who doesn't need someone to look over their shoulders to keep them on track; a person with a strong work ethic; a person who can get the job done, done right, and right on time. All of these are strong leadership qualities. In our very own Marine Corps, all Marines should in fact embody some, if not all, of these traits. The will to continue even when others will not. Getting the job done at all costs. Being able to balance life and all its challenges, and still continue to go on. When all else fails our ethics are what drives us, not just as Marines, but as people as well. This book has been an inspiration to all services. It shows not only how any service member should strive to be, but also how a person should act. The only way that Lt. Rowans actions can be properly conveyed is through this quote: "Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak." - Thomas
The American Revolution marked the history of many heroic events that immaculately stand as true inspirations for the generations to come in the United States. Even today, the gallantry of a few soldiers that won independence for the country is not only kept in the hearts of the people but run in the American blood to demonstrate acts of valor at times of war and hardships. One such story recorded in the history dates back to 1776, about a sixteen-year old juvenile, Joseph Plumb Martin, joined the Rebel Infantry and recorded his tribulations about forty-seven years in a memoir titled as “A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier”. The book mainly focuses on the sufferings through the tough situation he went through.
The story gives me a newfound respect for the Army and the soldiers who were deployed in Iraq around that time because of the constant harassment the insurgents gave the unit. Not because of the war crimes that were committed. It was a magnificent book about the implications and psychological effects war can have on people and what it can lead them do, It has a lot of examples of good and bad leadership that I can take away from it and apply it to my own leadership style. And I can be more prepared in dealing with peers and subordinates in times of
The author expresses mild courage in the American soldiers who ought to be stronger and
As a soldier in combat he kept his country in mind instead of his family or himself. He becomes a hardcore die hard patriotic person that will go to any extent to save his unit of brothers. He understands that part of his job includes him having to put his life on the line. This shows courage and his true colors. He said in the book “i would lay dead for this nation”.
The author researched the hidden details of the sacrifice and pain that the American prisoners had been through. The bravery that the American people utilized to face the cruel British enemy was demonstrated in the book. Edwin G.burrows relied on credible and descriptive resources to deliver a better message to the readers. The book is inspirable and it used different methods to trigger the attention of the reader. Altogether, I enjoyed reading this book and I am looking to read more publications from the same
What triggered a unit of young, male American soldiers from across the country to commit one of the most brutal, massacres in American military history? Were they simply following orders? Perhaps, these soldiers simply broke under the pressure of a malicious war. Perhaps, their moral line between enemy and civilian had been deliberately distorted. While the question is still widely debated among countless historians, word of the My Lai tragedy did not actually reach the American public until late 1969, almost one year after it actually occurred: March 16th, 1968.
The main idea of of this reading is to show the irreversible damage that has been done to Fidel Lopez. Fidel Lopez was severely beaten by African Americans who were protesting for injustices being committed to the African American community. Luckily, he was saved by Bennie Newton. Lopez was repeatedly kicked and drained in gasoline. I believe that the writer wrote about Fidel Lopez because it was something that was left out of during the madness.
A Message To Garcia starts out talking about the war that broke out between Spain and the United States, and how important communication was with the leader of the rebels. Colonel Rowan was chosen to go deliver this message to General Garcia in Cuba. No one knew where General Garcia was, but Colonel Rowan placed the letter in an oilskin pouch and strapped it across his heart and went on this mission that took him three weeks, with no complaints or questions. “It is not book-learning young men need, nor instruction about this and that, but a stiffening of the vertebrae which will cause
The main objective of this essay is to prove the point that the officers were not inept and did their best considering their extraordinary circumstances they were placed in. The circumstances required a large amount of human discipline and a loss of human life was expected. The generals can be seen as competent as some displayed valour and courage even in the worst situations. The generals were given the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration to be awarded for valour, for “most conspicuous bravery displayed” (“Victoria Crosses”).
One morning in an exchange with a young lieutenant, General Lee used a casual greeting and empathized with the soldier’s workload, believing that speaking as a friend, he would best convey his expectation of a good day’s work (Marrin 108). The relationships General Lee formed with his troops built a foundation of trust. His men expressed that “if he was nearby, they felt safe...” (Marrin 172). General Lee cared deeply for his men and tried to never expose them to unnecessary danger.
Although this short story is fiction, given O’Brien’s personal experience, it holds many truisms; one of which being the battle between what a man does and what a man feels he has to do. O’Brien’s use of characterization deconstructs what it means to be a man by exploring how events and situations dictate a soldier’s
In his book, A Higher Call, Adam Makos provides the readers with information on how even though their were many conflicts and hardships between the enemies during World War II, there was a chance that there were good men on both sides of the war. Adam Makos is a journalist, historian, and editor of Valor, a military magazine. Throughout his whole life he has been attached to what went on during World War II. When he was younger, him and his friends wanted to be journalists one summer and started up a magazine that eventually took off. The main purpose of the magazine was very similar to this book and its meaning.
Many seem to over emphasize the many privileges gained as an officer and seem to completely overlook the ever more important duties that should be the true motivators. I must ensure to maintain this mindset. I must also remember to put “people first”. (Department of Defense, 1988) This will be a cornerstone in every decision I make.
In the novel, The Red Badge of Courage written by Stephen Crane, Crane writes about the daily challenges that soldiers faced and lived through during the Civil War. The novel goes into depth on the struggle and hardships of war. In the story, the main character, Henry, goes through physical, moral, and ethical obstacles during his time in the Army, and has to make difficult decisions to overcome his challenges. From the Civil War all the way to modern wars, such as Vietnam, the life of a soldier has changed very little. The lives of these heroic figures are affected by daily life, family, and the soldier’s
