“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way,” as said by John C. Maxwell. This reminds people about what it takes to be a great leader and has raised many controversies as to what a great leader is. Qualities like decisiveness, confidence, focus, and consistency are necessary to make a leader. Virtue, which is a behavior showing high moral standards , is not one of the necessary qualities. By analyzing literature and history, a person can still be a good and effective leader without virtue because they are consistent, credible, and have a vision of their goals. Abigail Williams, a character from The Crucible, was not virtuous but was a great leader to many of the girls in Salem. Abigail had an affair with a married …show more content…
She tells the girls her plan, and because she gives them a clear vision, they listen to her and follow her lead. Not to mention, when all the other girls were panicking about Mary Warren telling the truth, Abigail showed how powerful she really was by manipulating Mary into coming back to her side when she realized that Abigail was the more credible source (The Crucible, Act II.198). Abigail was consistent throughout the whole story and did not break her tale not even once which is why she got away with her lies until she left to go to another town before anyone even suspected her. Even though she was unvirtuous, she exemplified the characteristics of a great …show more content…
John Smith lead the settlers for years which caused the town to thrive. When he left, Jamestown fell into greed, chaos, and starvation. By Smith “staying calm and confident” throughout his lead there, all of the people stayed the same, calm and confident (Prive). He pushed all of the people of every social class to work hard. He took charge after mutiny broke out because he knew that if he did not they would not have survived. So he gave orders and people listened because he was credible and reliable. Even when the two colonists died on the expedition he lead, he did not let that stop him, because his fate of being a leader was
In The Crucible, there are many events in which individuals are hurt, both physically and inwardly. Sometimes, were harmed and even killed, and in different cases, individuals' feelings were harmed. Many individuals passed on after a progression of allegations, lies, and brutal demonstrations of envy amid the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts in the 1600s. In The Crucible, Abigail is the main evil character in the play.
Imagine being responsible for the imprisonment and execution of two hundred people. Not only that but what if you were a young teenager also? This is what exactly happened in “The Crucible.” Abigail Williams, a young teenager girl, who is responsible for the execution and imprisonment of innocent people.
One such character is Abigail Williams, from The Crucible. Abigail uses her implacable personality and cogent acting to condemn innocent citizen for witchcraft without proof. Abigail’s rancorous method of unscrupulously accusing and castigating innocent civilians shows her lack of integrity. Furthermore, Zeena Frome,
Every good story has to have differing characters to drive the story forward. Some are easy to like while others take some time to understand. However, there is usually at least one that immediately stands out as the villain. In The Crucible, this character is Abigail Williams, a selfish and vindictive girl that loves to cause trouble around town. She is the opposite of Elizabeth Proctor, the honest and caring wife of John Proctor.
Gross corruption is when somebody is willing to procure anything out of greed or selfishness to gain money and power. One of many examples from “The Crucible” is Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris’s niece, she wants to be with John Proctor, but she is willing to anything to get rid of his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Out of envy, Abigail accused Elizabeth of witchcraft, knowing that Goody Proctor would be executed. Envy is one of the toxins in our society today, and my assumption to get rid of envy is to praise each other, and be more grateful for what we possessed. Instead of bring another person down, bring yourself up, and work harder.
There are many examples of indirect characterization of Abigail Williams in The Crucible. the beginning of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams is a liar and refuses to tell the truth; towards the end of The Crucible we find she is self-centered. First, John Proctor states the way he feels about Abigail Williams in a very rude way; “PROCTOR, breathless and in agony; it [Abigail] is a whore!” When John Proctor confessed to adultery, Abigail was questioned if all of what Mary Warren was true. She lied to keep her good name as the misleading person she is.
Winona Ryder stated that Abigail Williams is not the villain in Miller’s play, The Crucible. In reality, Abigail definitely portrays the villain by her manipulative and evil deeds. For example, Abigail accused Goody Proctor of witchcraft because Elizabeth suspected lechery between Abigail and her husband, John, which allowed for Goody Proctor to dismiss her. In Act III, Mary Warren confesses to the court that Abigail Williams was the one to accuse Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft. In which Elizabeth replies, “Question Abigail Williams about the gospel, not myself.”
Abigail wants power and only thinks about saving herself and to be with John Proctor. Abigail lets all the secrets and lies get to her head causing the love of her life to die. Abigail does nothing but run away from her problems. Her wanting Proctor resulted in nothing which caused many innocent people to die. She did not get what she wanted and the only thing she did was create a big
Throughout the world, religion plays a prominent role in the lives of people. Religion in the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, has a controversial usage, which establishes a historical event that happened in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, known as the Salem Witch Trials. The townspeople in Salem has the urge to be seen as perfect in God’s hand, which leads to major false accusations of innocent people. The play demonstrates that people seeking vengeance will use fear and vulnerability to fulfill their goals. Abigail Williams’ desire for vengeance on Elizabeth Proctor is a fog that hides her detrimental actions.
The Crucible Miller illustrated a significant story about the Puritans in Salem Massachusetts in 1692. One of the worst events that happened in Salem Massachusetts were the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials took place when people were being convicted as being a witch or other hands being the devil. The people that were prosecuted were the poor, the aids, and the old people of the little town of Salem. As Miller interpreted the moral behind the historical event, he made a similar connection with the play.
It takes a special type of evil to let innocent people suffer for one's own needs and wants and have no remorse for anything that may happen. In the play The Crucible, Arthur Miller describes the events that are happening in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts. People throughout the town are getting called out for suspicion of witchcraft and are being sent to jail to await trial. Many of the people accused were respected citizens in the community while the accusers were a group of teenage girls led by Abigail Williams. In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, Miller showed that Abigail Williams’ flaws of cowardness, by running away from Salem when people started to revolt, jealousy of John Proctor’s wife, and the manipulation of her friends
What made Abigail such a powerful antagonist was her selfishness. Abigail was involved in an affair with John Proctor which is another factor for the drama in the play. After John Proctors wife found out about the affair she was demoted from her job at their home and sent back to live so her uncle reverend Parris. This affair sets the play in motion since the reason Abigail was in the woods was to cast a spell on John’s wife Elizabeth. Abigails main motivation behind all her actions that caused such chaos in the play was to get rid of Elizabeth so she could have Ohm Proctor.
Irony is everywhere and in every walk in life. Irony was around back in 1692 and in the 1950’s. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, has irony throughout it. In Act II of The Crucible there are many ironies that help display the calamity of the Salem witch trials. The irony of Abigail's situation is very prominent in Act II.
Abigail was not a great character, and throughout the play she didn’t get any nicer, or change at all. Abigail was the same character from the beginning to the end. Abigail even tries to kill someone, and accuses other people of being a witch. Abigail had a mean personality, didn’t change at all, and was motivated to get back at another character. Abigail Williams was a very odd character, she was manipulative, a bully, and leader of a large group of girls.
Kelseyleigh Reber is not off on the wrong track about the world when she says, “The worst prisons were not constructed of warped steel and stone. They were carved out of expectations and lies, judgment and corruption.” Freedom exist on a complicated scale where people are be free, or they are imprisoned by the surrounding society. However, sometimes, people can be both mentally and physically free and imprisoned. Throughout The Crucible, Arthur Miller epitomizes the reality that every human being can be imprisoned yet free.
