If you value humility and being altruistic, you will be sincerely disappointed in the outcome of Macbeth along with modern day rulers’ real life decisions. Shakespeare’s character Macbeth was a powerful ruler who became extremely egotistical when he was given power that wasn’t his. Along with being egotistical, he is very selfish when it comes to making decisions that only benefit him. This is shown in modern day scenarios; for example, Hitler and Nayib Bukele. All three narcissistic men do things to benefit themselves to endure power. People abuse power for selfish reasons due to their egotistical tendencies. This is important to still understand in modern times because it shows how political parties can be selfish when not everything goes …show more content…
Macbeth commanding their knowledge shows readers that he has a high ego, while also showing that he thinks that he is better than everyone else. Another essential point is, according to recent studies from the citizens of El Salvador, “If you have pissed anybody off, you are liable to be thrown in jail … You don’t get a lawyer, you don’t get a phone call, you don’t get rights – and you are thrown in hell,” Altamirano said.” (The Guardian, 2022) This relates back to the claim because Nayib Bukele gets extremely selfish and power hungry when it comes to his country. He makes big decisions that only benefit him and what he thinks is right; just like how Macbeth does in Shakespeare’s play. Stated by Tom Phillips, “He is buttressed by tremendous popular support … [People] see him as an absolute hero … He couldn’t be more applauded by the majority of the population … It makes wonderful propaganda,” said Altamirano” (Phllips, 2022, Paragraph 20) Similarly, both Macbeth and Nayib Bukele are being honored by their people even though what their doing is wrong. This is because the people are scared. El Salvador citizens applaud Nayib Bukele and his presidential efforts, make his ego higher and …show more content…
In the story, Macbeth becomes nervous that Banquo will over power him. “But to be safely thus. Our fears in Banquo Stick deep, and in his royalty of nature Reigns that which would be feared. 'Tis much he dares, And to that dauntless temper of his mind To act in safety. There is none but he Whose being I do fear.” (Shakespeare, 1608, Lines 50-57, Act 3, Scene 1) It is apparent that, Macbeth despises when other people have more power and control than him. He gets selfish when he finds out his best friend’s family is going to take the throne before him. This relates to modern society when we learn that Adolph Hitler did a similar thing when he invaded countries that have more power than him. Throughout Hitler’s entire time as a german politician, he was selfish whenever someone didnt agree with him or do what he wanted to do in order to make him more powerful. “London did not at all respond as he had anticipated. Hitler had maneuvered himself into such a position that he could only make his threats true and carry out the barbarous massacre of millions of innocent Jews.”(The Complete Hitler, 2023, Page 15 or 1381)This evidence relates to the claim because London didnt like what Hitler was doing as a leader, Hitler got upset and decided nobody should have
Macbeth is the main character in this tragic story, receiving a prophecy which suggests Macbeth will receive power. Instead of letting the power come naturally he takes matters into his own hand and commiting a murder, deciding he’s in too deep he does more atrocious acts to keep and gain more power. The quote “The quality of the will to power is, precisely, growth. The vaster the power gained, the vaster the appetite for
Power can make people selfish, and selfishness can make people go insane. Actions always end up having
Macbeth states, “Every minute of his being thrusts against my near’st of life,” (89), meaning that Banquo’s very existence threatens his wellbeing. Banquo himself was not a direct threat but it was Macbeth’s fear of losing power that deduced him to be. This shows how similarly to King James, Macbeth too faced paranoia of being killed by others and losing power, doing anything in his authority to eliminate obstacles. Furthermore, the many other murders he commits are solely because he feared that the victim would harm him and his chances of gaining utmost control and power would be put at
While some people can be right-minded and powerful, power is a corrupting force because power causes greed and selfishness. Power can easily be abused, and power amplifies any personality traits you may have, good or bad. In the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare, this is a key point. Power can be abused in many different ways. Whether it’s an autocracy with one person having absolute power, or even a democracy where the person in power is limited by their own branches of government, people have always wanted power.
The world is a very powerful and unequal place where it is harder to even have a say in what happens in your life. If it is looked at closer as an individual you can choose to stay silent and get controlled by external forces or have your own opinion on things and choose the best for yourself. Sometimes others can't be true to themselves so they force power upon themselves to make people feel hopeless or feel as though they are being brainwashed into doing anything the person in power wants them to. The concept of unequal power is a prominent theme in Shakespeare's play Macbeth, where the protagonist's wish for power leads to his downfall. This idea can also be seen in modern times, particularly among high authority leaders who hold significant
It is human nature to want power, to be at the top of the pyramid, to be king/queen, but that comes at a price as shown in Macbeth. In the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth will do anything to have absolute power and nothing stands in their way. From killing to going completely mad, they will become the next king and queen at all costs. The ambition and the want for power is so high that they kill many, they do whatever they can to be one step closer, and they go completely insane, all because they want that absolute power.
Despite the responsibilities and duties present in positions of power, once people realize the amount of control they have and therefore abuse it to fulfill their own desires and ambitious actions. In the end, power is abused since humanity subconsciously desires after more and more
This is best summarized by Jeremy E. Sherman’s Here’s How People Become Tyrants at Home or Anywhere “Just living from moment to moment, enjoying what success you gain without worrying about how you gained it.” (Sherman). Macbeth best shows this by not caring much about the victims he killed, eventually stating he will just get used to it “My strange and self-abuse Is the initiate fear that wants hard use. We are yet but young in deed.”
Obtaining power and control is the greatest desire of mankind. Take Macbeth’s initial thought about murder in Act 1 Scene 3. “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical,
Macbeth stated, “Our fears in Banquo stick deep,/ And in his royalty of nature reigns/ That which would be feared” (3.1.55-57). He was afraid of Banquo, and it drove Macbeth to get rid of him and his son who was prophesied to be a king as well, “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none”(1.3.69), is the prophecy Banquo had received. So Macbeth sent out murderers after them.
Power becomes easily obtainable once the individual has been corrupted or manipulated, similar to the leading character Macbeth who is influenced to commit malicious crimes to benefit his desires to obtain power. Having too much power however, can become a very detrimental aspect to ones personality. Macbeth murders his way to the top inveigled by
Macbeth loses his last scrap of morality when he orders the murder of innocents to enrage a rival. Shakespeare’s Macbeth shows that humans will do whatever it takes to achieve and maintain power by charting Macbeth’s descent from noble thane to murderous tyrant. Macbeth’s position of thane is already quite powerful but the need for more power overwhelms his loyalties to others.
Thesis Statement: In William Shakespeare’s, Macbeth, the character of Macbeth’s morals slowly started to decrease as he soon realized he had an opportunity to become a King, and his position of power he soon abused, while Macbeth is only a fictional character, Kim Jong-Un position of power he has abused without consequence and keeps on growing. At first Macbeth is a normal person, friends, a wife, living a good life. But as he soon realizes he can be king and attain power the greed takes him over and he doesn things that are unimaginable for some normal person to do that's what greed and ambition does to a person. Macbeth after finding out he can obtain power, is already thinking about killing someone just to make sure he can have it, even
The desire for dominance and power can result in disregarding the humanity of others that stand in the way. On the journey to ultimate power, friendship is omitted and power is put first. In Macbeth, Macbeth is given the opportunity to become king, the greatest power, and seizes it. He encounters three witches who tells him a prophecy that he and Fleance, the son of Macbeth’s life long friend: Banquo, will become king. … …… MACBETH:
Power can impact an individual in both positive and negative ways. With power comes responsibility. How an individual chooses to handle that power determines the consequences. If a person uses their power for robust purposes, then there will be a positive outcome. Using power for evil (or greedy) motives, results in an equally negative outcome.
