James Madison’s presidency can be very controversial, many had thought that he had a difficult time pulling away from wars as well as making uninformed decisions that ended up hurting merchants, but even with those setbacks, he is still considered an amazing statesman. This is because he had a lot of history working in the government such as how Madison had completed graduate studies within the law before he had begun involved with the government. This means that he had plenty of knowledge and experience with laws in the government, he had first started out with local politics and began working his way up to the Secretary of State under Jefferson's presidency. Since James Madison was in the position of secretary of state, he had worked closely with Jefferson who had control over key decisions, such as overseeing the Louisiana purchase, which had given him some history of the purchase for future reference. James Madison had also warned the government about the seizure of American ships by France and Britain, which John Randolph had taken into consideration, and said it was contrary to international law. Madison thought that the government needed a better form of money income for the government, so he had created the system of checks and balances. Checks and balances are designed so that the power in the government is separated between different branches specifically designed so that one branch does not have too much power over other forms of government and the people. He had made it so that the constitution specifically states what powers each branch has, this way the branches are unable to take too much power and overcome the government. Having the checks and balances gives each department their own field so that others don’t impinge on their decisions creating conflict in the governmental
