Important people such as William Hoffman, who controlled many prisons and squeezed every penny out of the prisons could to make a profit. Throughout chapters 2 and 3, the book really focuses on the prisoner’s life and the harsh conditions that not just the prisoners but also the owners of the prison went through. These harsh conditions include a blizzard that went passed the prison, “… the temperature dropped to twenty degrees below zero.” There was also an outbreak of many diseases and complaints that prisoners had such as smallpox, concussions, and broken bones. Alcatraz Reflection Should these men have been punished because of their actions in support of their beliefs. I think these prisoners were strong in their beliefs and should not be punished because everyone should have their freedom of speech and should have been able to believe in what they believe is right. Well my first prisoner I will talk about is Philip Grosser and he is one of the guys I was saying that believe in something and will keep believing it no matter what. Philip Grosser was a good man and he believed that there was no need for guns or war he was an anti-militarist he had been sent to prison camps in the first world war after he refused to join the army and from prison camp to prison camp he had landed on alcatraz on June
That makes it the best escape in history. The night of June 11, 1962 they knew they would time it right since it was only night time and the lights were off that made more simple for them to escape then any other people tried to escape that made hard for others. The other inmates either timed it late or very early in the daytime that’s why the other inmates either got shot, drowned or got caught because they didn’t escapeor they either jumped in the water. But for these 3 inmates they just pulled it off with the dummy heads that fooled the guards enough. The Mastermind was Frank Morris who came up with the daring plan to escape the prison known as “The Rock” where no one even dared to escape the prison cause they knew what the guards would do once they were
The prison was fairly unique when compared to the other prisons at the time because of the its high prison standards. During the prisons

Adolfo Lopez Mr. Watrous English 3 13 January 2022 The Rise and fall of Al Capone Who is the first to come to mind when you think of mobsters? Most of you probably said Al Capone given that he was a highly significant and prominent mobster in the “roaring twenties” due to his memorable name and actions. From his revolutionary way of organizing crime to his later imprisonment on the count of tax evasion. Al Capone's life was an exceptional example of a rise and fall story.
Some of these famous inmates were Arthur “Doc” Barker, Robert Stroud the “Birdman of Alcatraz”, Roy Gardner, Henri Young, James “Whitey” Bulger, Mickey Cohen, Alvin Karpis, Al Capone, Floyd Hamilton, the driver of Bonnie and Clyde, and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. These people were famous for being powerful but their power came from their crimes so they spent some time on Alcatraz. According to biography.com, most of Al Capone’s gang never got put in jail because he had over 600 people that he hired and he started the gang so he was charged not his gang members. I also learned that Bonnie and Clyde were not imprisoned in Alcatraz, but they were shot and killed by police because they were such
The prison hasn’t just been used to provide a building, but its been used for it’s material and has been slowly torn apart. Piece by piece through time, parts of the prison have been torn down. In 1916, there was a flood in Yuma and what the townspeople used to rebuild were parts from the prison (Murphy 1). In order for the Southern Pacific Railroad to be built the western walls and the woman's cells had to be destroyed in 1923 (The Yuma Territorial Prison). More destruction was made when the hospital in the prison and the Mes Hall were burned down in 1924 (The Yuma Territorial Prison).

Also Padre Kino saw the current location of the prison and the Quartermaster's Depot in 1683. Padre Graces established a mission directly across the river and was later killed there by the Indians in 1781.
