Social media has become a controversial topic over the recent years. There is a disagreement between people in whether social media can be a good thing or a bad thing to those who use it. Whether it can help or hurt people. Kennis Cady was a twelve year old girl from my hometown who committed suicide because of social media. The things that were said to her and about her over social media became a factor in Cady’s death. This brings up a question about her death; would she have committed suicide if it wasn’t for social media, or would these people still have picked on her during school? The first social media site became public in 1997 and ended in 2001. The first social media site was Sixdegrees.com which allowed people to connect with friends …show more content…

This can also change the way that people communicate through these friendships. Many people feel more comfortable sharing things through social media than they are with face-to-face contact. Social media is able to break down barriers and allow more personal information to be shared easily. Many people will post information that they would never call other people just to share if social media did not exist. We are able to see and learn more about people than we were before social media became popular. People feel more comfortable talking to others through social media than they do through face-to-face contact. Nowadays people are willing to meet others through social media sites as an alternative from meeting people through personal interaction (5). A study has shown that more than one third of teenage girls have met people offline after they became friends with them online. This means that people are willing to get to know someone through social media even though they might not be who they say they are. One in every ten of these experiences ended badly. This could range from a stalking incident to rape/death. Not only can meeting face to face cause problems, online friendships and relationships can cause problems too. One in five people have been harassed by their partner through social media or their electronic devices. An abuser is willing to say these cruel things because it
A major means of social interaction in the 21st century is social media with nearly two thirds of all Americans using it. As social media is extremely widespread it is bound to have its ups and downs. Those who see it in a positive light say it provides information and is an extremely simple way to connect the world. On the other hand, the negative side of social media, presents the cyber bullying, incivility and unreliable information. Ever since the first social media site sprouted in 1997, social media has grown exponentially.
Each year, more and more people are joining social media sites. A person can connect to others around the world without sharing personal information. The ability to connect can lead to more bullying since a user can bully privately without much government interaction. For instance, a research study states that 27% of students that use personal electronic devices and social media have been cyber bullied at least once. Then, a month after the study, 10% of students reported being bullied again (“Cyberbullying Facts”).
In middle school Instagram was everything, if someone didn’t get a certain amount of followers they would be put in a social hierarchy. If they posted a certain picture that someone in a higher ‘class’ in the hierarchy chain didn’t agree with, they would be talked about. In high school Instagram graduated to Twitter. Where at the click of a button your able to share your thoughts to whoever was following you. If you tweeted an uncommon opinion, you often receive backlash from people who you’ve never even interacted with.

Because they are detached from reality, many relationships can be affected by social media. Also, some of the major negative effect of social media is the lack of privacy and social detriments. Many teenagers are often too open to the public and they may be unaware that their personal information may be hacked and used by other people.

It’s just displayed as a different form of “bullying”, there’s a billion things that are posted on social media each seen in a different perspective giving a
As you see, the people who are just depending on social media, as Facebook, won’t want to meet people real live, you can find this kind of people around you. Social networking (Media) is addictive. People have their own reason to use social networking, according to one of social media report that 63% of Americans log on to Facebook daily, and 40% log on multiple times each day. Most of reason to use social media is just people want to check their friends news or look for funny stuff to kill time; I frequently look at my phone to check Facebook message or to look at Facebook for no reason it is difficult to stop using social media.
There are several negative effects, which are very harmful to our lives such as; cyberbullying, decreasing academic achievement and damaging the minds of the youth by restraining their physical socializing skills. Is Social Media Making Bullying Worse? In the end of the 20th century during the uprising of the internet and the introduction of new methods of communication such as email, messenger, and AOL, technology has evolved along with the construction and formation of social media. The most widespread examples of this newly modeled form of communication include famous platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, and several more. These unique platforms have allowed for revolutionary changes to be made in the world regarding mass media and communication.
In my project, I wish to show that this is happening not to someone you do not know, but someone you do. I wish to tell why social media is a dangerous platform that has taken a hold of teenagers lives. I wish to inform teens on the effects of using social media both in what is happening to their brains and bodies now and what will happen
Although social media is supposed to help connect people from all around the world, ironically, it has the potential to make us less social. For a social media to be a truly effective communication tool, all users hold an obligation to be honest, accurate, and not allow online networking to replace human contact completely. In the workplace for instance, the use of electronic communication has overtaken face-to-face and voice-to-voice communication widely (Tardanico, 2012). People nowadays would prefer to use instant messaging or other social media rather than hanging out and talk with someone. The growing usage of social networking sites easily influence people to have their own social media sites and making them addicted to online interactions which, when used excessively, will degrade the quality of face to face interactions.
Social networking sites are becoming more popular and more popular every year, cyberbullying also becomes a bigger issue every year too. With everyone on social media, they can stick up for the victim getting bullied and show the bully there is more to life than being a bully to a person. Eighty-four point two percent of students who have been cyberbullied has been on the social media site of facebook ( ). When colleges and businesses use social media to see if they should recruit a person they would know not to hire the person if they saw any cyberbullying going on and that person could then be punished. In the world over a billion people use Facebook on a daily basis ( ) as everyone uses facebook they can see and stop what bad is going on too.
