The Johnny Cash Project collects portraits drawn by individuals from all over the world. Each unique image reflects the artist’s vision of Johnny Cash. The portraits would then be combined into a whole – a music video for “Ain’t No Grave”, Johnny Cash’s final studio recording. The album surrounds the themes of mortality, resurrection, and everlasting life. The living portrait pays homage to these themes and will evolve and expand as more and more people learn about the project. The project is a viable method of representation of song, art, and narrative. Each image, extended from a template, reveals the artist’s perspective and thoughts of Johnny Cash. This made me think of the purpose of remediation – that is, to show different angles or
Frank Ocean once said, “When you 're happy, you enjoy the music. But when you 're sad, you understand the lyrics.” Why does one have to be sad to “understand the lyrics”? Evaluating a song and being given the ability to relate enhances one’s respect for the composer. For example, when one first listens to “Danny’s Song” by Kenny Loggins, they probably believe the song is about love, however, once a person analyzes the lyrics the realize that the song is actually a story of a couple who are having a baby boy.

On July 24, 1701, the oldest city outside of the original thirteen colonies was founded. This city would go on to be one of the more fascinating cities of the United States. Not only is this city home to riveting buildings, such as the only floating post office in America, but it is also home to Motown. This city is Detroit. With the merger of different styles of jazz and blues, Detroit was filled with potential; it wasn’t until Motown, though, that this talent reached a national level.
Country music is one of the most popular genres of music today in the United States. Even though Johnny Cash’s legacy is full of fame and fortune, he struggled with a drug and alcohol addiction for much of his career. A.J. Samuels, a writer for theculturetrip.com, claims that as Johnny Cash’s fame rose, so did his dependency on alcohol and amphetamines, which he started taking so he would be able to stay awake during his tours. Because of this, his performances would be extremely errotic, to the point where he would be stumbling and smashing things on stage. In 1955, Johnny and June Carter met and performed together on stage multiple times. The two of them had a love affair, while he was still married to his first bride Vivian, and the two fell madly in love.

One artists that used music as an expression was Johnny Cash, who brought country music back to the people after loosing popularity to rock and roll. Despite having his own style, Cash often recorded with rock and roll artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, who formed the Million Dollar Quartet. Johnny Cash is credited for “bridging the world of country music, rock'n'roll and the folk revival with the epic narratives” (A History of Popular Music before Rock Music). Cash’s music had a “raw, lean rhyme” with lyrics focused on the dirt-poor roots of country music and the “common man fallen from grace” (Lost Highway: The Story of Country Music). He too represented this common man and was the image of an adored bad boy who often got in trouble
Over the course of human history, music has been an integral part of life. Music’s impact can be seen in every facet of the world today and it is a way to express feelings, tell a story, or prove a point. It can bring people together and can transcend communities, cultures, and ideologies. Although many do not realize it, music has had a profound impact on all human lives, and the lives of all others that have since died. Some have coined music as a universal language. Perhaps, the complexity of the notes, the consistency of the beat, the array of instruments, or the flow of lyricism offers this universal appeal. Nevertheless, the unique composition of each song enables it to sustain its own magnetic aura, much like the musical implication in Lewis Nordans Music of the Swamp. Though, many argue Nordans piece suggests merely a collection of short stories rather than a novel, Nordan uses his singsong methodology- a novel-in-stories- to incorporate an anthology of his transformative memory- an autobiography of the way it was.
