Should The U.S. Have Annexed The Philippines?
When the Spanish-American war came to an end and Spain gave up their power in the Philippines and Cuba, the US showed they had no interest in annexing Cuba but were debating on whether or not they should annex the Philippines. The possibility of annexation pleased some but it also made other unhappy, like Emilio Aguinaldo who wanted the Philippines to be free from colonization. In his fight for the island’s freedom, Aguinaldo started a rebellion against the US army and soon enough the Philippine American war began. The instability in this island led to much debate over whether or not the annexation would benefit or detriment the Philippines.
A common viewpoint on the annexation of the Philippines was that it was a necessary action because without U.S involvement, the island would be unfit to look after itself. An example of a

People who opposed the annexation of the Philippines were often anti-imperialists who believed conquering foreign lands went against the concepts of republicanism. In “Platform of the American Anti-Imperialist League” (Document A), we are presented with the common beliefs such as the fact that the U.S. did not have the authority to rule another country or colony without its permission. The document expresses that taking control of a land without its peoples’ permission is cruel and oppressive. An example of an anti-imperialist is William Jennings Bryan. In his speech “Paralyzing Influence of Imperialism” (Document D), Bryan asserts that U.S. intervention on the Island is unnecessary because the Filipinos are just seeking independence, they do not want any control. He also states that in order for us to trade with them we do not have to control their territory. In Bryan’s eyes, it is best to leave the island alone and let them become a strong unified nation on their
The U.S. was given more land to control, including the Philippine islands, which McKinley found to be a problem because the islands were so far away and expanded over thousands of miles. Eventually, McKinley decided to annex the Philippines, and American support for the foreign policy soon followed. American imperialism was embraced by many because it allowed for the United States to get closer to becoming a major player on the world stage. Some believed it was their duty to “Christianize” the Filipinos; others believed it was a stepping stone for trade with China. Those in opposition of annexing the Philippines, especially the Anti-Imperialist League, believed that it didn’t align with American
According to McKinley, we could not give the Philippines back to Spain because we would look foolish.
The united states had achieved lots of power, economically and politically. After we gained power of a number of small countries we couldn 't give them back so we demanded use of land for naval bases and resources. we educated the filipinos, uplifted and civilized them the best we could to help them and us. After the civil war the united stated need economic growth.
It also shows how inaccurate the behavior and treatment was to the Philippines, people were almost clueless to the fact that the war over there was gruesome and the Philippines wanted their own independence, not the U.S.'s rule. No I do not think the U.S. should have annexed the Philippines. "No man is good enough to govern another man without that others consent." (Norton,1997) This quote was in good terms to go along the ideals of the U.S. decisions made towards the Philippines.
The lands that were annexed during this time were all located in foreign waters. It’s not much of a coincidence that the U.S wanted to control countries that were located in the there when looking at Document E. The book Influence Of Sea Power Upon History by Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan, speaks about how in the history of past battles always have a large portion of them take place in water. Using this article to analyze the U.S’s actions, we needed to have land in the waters in order for us to stand any chance in the future of world conflicts. This was also a chance to display the large naval power that Theodore Roosevelt had build up during his
One significant aspect of the Spanish-American War was its impact on territorial expansion and imperial ambitions of the United States. The conflict provided the opportunity for the United
They saw it as the “perfect stepping-stones” trade with China and the rest of Asia. American business men felt it was necessary for the government to show some authority and capitalize on this opportunity. American saw Manila as their
American wanted to control the Philippines government to get closer to China for trading. Another interest is access to trading. According to Document 1, “Process of three hundred years of superstition in religion, dishonesty in dealing, disorder in habits of industry, and cruelty, caprice, and corruption in government. It is barely possible that 1,000 men in all archipelago are capable of self-government.” US President, McKinley believed they couldn’t govern themselves against other nations.
The answer is an emphatic no. It was a waste of money and resources, they were as cruel and inflexible as Spain in their opinion of how to treat the natives, and it went against all governmental beliefs the U.S. stood for. Annexing the Philippines was not a wise decision. Although the idea seemed great at the time, annexing the Philippines was a major waste
Separate countries trade with each other without having to be annexed in another country, so the US took away the Philippines independence and they did not truly profit. In the end, Annexing the Philippines to profit from trade was
William McKinley in his thoughts on American Expansionism has identified the reasons why America had no other choice but to incorporate Philippines as a part of it. This writing has been lifted from the excerpts of an interview with William McKinley soon after Spain had surrendered in the Spanish-American war. McKinley cleverly talks in this interview about how Philippines just came and fell into the laps of America thereby suggesting the helpless stance of America. He talks about how America’s sole intention and purpose had only been to safeguard its own interests as a country. He had to order that the Spanish fleets in Manila be destroyed because if left unattended, they would have crossed the Pacific and wreaked havoc in the American states
The annexation of Texas was a contentious issue in the United States. According to the reading, the critics argued about the consequences of annexing Texas would be "the wealth and cares brought by expansion" would make the US government certain to die. Moreover, others assumed that "expansions was a scheme by southern slave owners to add new slave states and thus increase their power" (p134). On the other hand, the opponents such as Walker mentioned the threatened consequences of not annexing Texas such as abolishing slavery problems, "the country would face economic depression, civil war, and dismemberments; and America's most powerful enemy would be handed a potent weapon with which to menace the nation's security ... should annexation
After the war, America was awarded with the philippines, not sure with what to do with them, they looked at the reasons for imperialism, and expanding their own nation. In regard to expanding, The United States, bought Alaska from russia for 7.2 million dollars. And sugar farmers in Hawaii, overthrew the queen, and annexed to the United States. With the philippines, there were 3 main ways to do diplomacy. 3 different presidents each had their own way of dealing with the issues.
In being an anti-imperialist the worrisome is not that one opposes the idea of expansion of religion, commercial, and constitutional. It’s that with the annexing of these tropical islands would come to a result of the American system of self government would be that America might abandon this idea that makes America that nation it is to this point. Three reasons why the U.S should avoid imperialism is because it fails to follow that criteria of the constitution, could lead to tyrants like behavior, and could lead to conflict One argument that can’t be missed is the fact that the constitutions sets forth a principle that states “consent of the governed” after further research this means that to imperialize and annex other islands would violate
When we made allies of the Filipinos and armed them to fight against Spain”. In my opinion, I think that the people of America had just gone based off of what President Lincoln had stated so greatly before. Yes, he may have expired from this Earth, but based of of what he had been saying corresponds very well to the situation at hand. To me, I think that Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest Presidents of all time. The wonderful saying that Abraham Lincoln said (Based off of the article in Document A): “no man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent.
