Lichens and bryophytes of the alpine and subalpine zones of Katahdin, Maine, I: Overview, ecology, climate and conservation aspects. The Bryologist 112(4): 651-672. Maine’s tallest peak, Katahdin, is covered by vast amount of the alpine and subalpine ecosystem and vegetation. The region contains a variety of bryophytes and lichen that have been around since the mid-1800s and for about 16 days from 2001 to 2004, researchers have been surveying the lichens and bryophytes of the area. They found the same species of bryophytes and lichen as well as other vegetation that they had known to be there, but …show more content…
Next to Nevada lies the White Mountains of California which represents a place where geographical isolation and climate history have greatly impacts the flora in the alpine region. There are a vast variety of climate extremes in the White Mountains, such as the low precipitation, low temperature, high ultraviolet radiation and low atmospheric pressure. Evidently, there are many climatic factors that can greatly stress vegetation. Though much broader research of the area has been done, there is litte on the elevation above 3500 meters. This article touches on the diversity of alpine flora at this elevation. The researchers divided each alpine species into six life form categories, then divided habitats in to seven categories based on moisture, and divided biogeographic range into give categories based on species presence around the world. It was found that there are 163 native species and there are only seven families that account for the majority of the alpine flora. One of the most dominant native alpine flora is the herbaceous perennials, a commonly seen alpine organism. Other significant kinds of flora are mats and cushions, and low in number are shrubs and subshrubs. The paper really helped in understand the alpine fellfield ecosystem because it went in depth about the inventory of the flora in the White Mountains and what kind of habitat they are most likely to be found in. Also, the concept that the alpine habitats are commonly inhospitable for alien plant species was stated in the
Geologists have found that the oldest exposed rocks in the national park to date back to 75 million years. The formations resulted from sediments that were largely swept into the area due to the rise of the Rocky Mountains. This eventually resulted in a rising of land above sea level. The deposits consisted of different strata of dark shale beds, many containing fossils of marine life from the Seaway (Stoffer 2003).
Also during its retreat, the Laurentide Ice Sheet also left behind a desolate landscape that only contained the spores of lichen. Eventually, that lichen sprouted and attracted birds which in turn eventually brought all life back to this once ice covered land mass (PBS). Today some of the rocky outcroppings that the
The land west of here is a prosperous and beautiful territory, filled with new and beautiful plants and animals. The land is filled with mountains, plains, hilly lands, and great lakes and rivers. The animals we have found here are wonderful, adaptable, and alluring. There are many plants that could be used to help with medicine,

Fitting the pieces of corroboration on how the flowers changed the world, a critique The essay “How Flowers Changed the World” is a popular excerpt from The Immense Journey, written by American natural science writer, Loren Eiseley that discusses the significance of the rise of flowers on the evolution of living organisms. Eiseley implied that flowers carry many different significant attributes to the growth of living organisms may it be for animals, for other plants, and for humankind. Loren Eiseley discussed that during the first ages, plants were dependent on water for their growth that led many swamps and watercourses surrounding the earth with the vast and bare land. Moreover, as these plants may adapt these conditions, it can be deemed normal;

Rebecca Dwyer 215 033 159 “The Advantages of a Dominant Sporophyte over a Dominant Gametophyte” It is commonly known by most people that the planet that humans call home is inhabited by many other diverse forms of life. Further than this, it is evident that a large percentage of these life forms are plants. This could be seen as a slight paradox- plants can be considered more primitive than animals, because they are incapable of movement in order to escape from predation, or to reach close contact distance with other organisms for the purpose of reproduction. How then, one could ask, has the survival of the plant kingdom been so successful?
