Take a look around - it seems as if the flag of the United States is flown at half mast often in recent years. Most of the time, the reason for lowering the flag is from a tragic event that occurred: like a shooting. Many of these devastating events could have been prevented if the person responsible could have gotten the proper psychiatric health help. Sadly, a large amount of people suffer from a mental illness. Emotional disorders deserve recognition to receive the proper amount of funding and support. To encourage more funding to support mental disorder research, the negative stereotypes of mental illness need to be eliminated. Many people do not understand what a mental illness is. In a survey, 80% of people agreed that most people …show more content…
A recent incident, the shooting in a Texas church, killed twenty six people. According to President Trump, the gunman, Devin P. Kelly, had a mental health problem (Mukherjee). A tragedy like this makes people talk about gun violence and control but the underlying issue is actually an extremely mentally sick person who used a weapon in a violent manner because of an untreated or undiagnosed mental illness. Many people are uneducated about the various problems the brain can cause when a mental illness is present. Until a well publicized tragedy occurs, mental illness is frequently associated only with poor, homeless, people who can not afford treatment. While most people with mental illness do not commit violent acts towards others, most violent acts are committed by someone with mental illness of some type. Many people with mental illness in fact are not violent towards others, but more likely to harm themselves through some type of self harm …show more content…
Clair County with a designated behavioral health unit (Mirly). A behavioral health unit is a specific part of the hospital where patients receive evaluation, medication, counseling, and other therapies specifically designed to treat mental illness. Patients from the entire southern Illinois area and even Missouri receive treatment through these services, There are also fewer and fewer licensed psychiatrist to provide psychiatric treatment. A new patient can have a two month or greater wait to be evaluated and treated by a psychiatrist (Mirly). That might mean a person could wait that entire time without proper medication and treatment. There are also community support programs available to assist people with mental illness, but most of the funding for these programs comes from the government. Recent budget cuts have caused these agencies to eliminate staff and reduce available programs. This has left less trained staff to take care of mentally ill patients. Increases in government funded programs would allow more people to be treated in less time and with a greater
There needs to be more of a effort to check in with mentally ill people. Nikolas Cruz, a nineteen year boy old that suffered from autism, depression, and lots of others mental health issues, killed 17 students at Stoneman Douglas High School. Both of his parents died and he had no other family members to turn to. When his parents passed away, he lived with his friends parents. He got kicked out of Stoneman Douglas High School and was working at the dollar store.
Untreated mental illness is dangerous and over time we have learned that locking people with a mental illness is not the solution but makes it worse. People with untreated mental illness face many consequences. “People with untreated psychiatric illnesses comprise 250,000 people, of the total homeless population” (mentalillnesspolicy.org). The quality of life for these individuals is extremely heart breaking, and many are victimized regularly.
When people hear the words, “mental illness,” they think of insane asylums and psychiatric wards, but that’s not necessarily the case. Yes, back in the 1800’s they did have asylums for people with mental disorders. But that was when doctors didn’t fully understand mental illnesses and disorders. But currently, doctors are able to comprehend illnesses and disorders.
Mental illness significantly affects many around the world. In fact, about four-hundred and fifty million people worldwide suffer from one or more of the different known mental illnesses. That is one in every four people. Severe mental health issues such as severe anxiety disorder, antisocial personality disorder, schizophrenia, or sensory perception disorder are illnesses which are common among the people responsible for the numerous mass shootings in America. Many believe the possession of firearms in the hands of the mentally ill are the real cause of mass shootings.
By definition, a mental disorder is characterized as a behavioral pattern that causes significant distress or impairment on personal functioning. This becomes evident within their behaviors, decisions, functions, etc. For example, Valentine’s Day of 2018 saw one of the most traumatic school shootings in Florida with at least seventeen dead. Once the news was released that this man claimed he was going to be a “professional school shooter” following an expulsion back in September, it was clear to the public that the fault was held by a mentally ill man. Nevertheless, many claim that humans, no matter sane or not, are entitled to their own unalienable rights and should not have to be forced into anything.
However, a definite solution still has not been reached and America is split on the topic. The solutions currently enacted focus on guns, yet America still has a serious issue with gun related crime attacks, and fatalities. Solutions should not solely target the actual guns, because guns are powerless without the person who fires the weapon. The solution should not be to take away guns, but to consider the people who have access to them. Addressing mental health is the real solution to preventing gun violence and attacks.
There are more people incarcerated who have a mental illness that there are in psychiatric hospitals. (Psychology Today). Mental Health America reports that “there are more than 1.2 million people currently residing in prisons and/or jails with a mental health condition and lack of access to mental health care”. (MHA). 40% of adults with a serious mental illness will be arrested at some point in their lifetime, usually for disturbing the peace or for a petty crime which are caused by their mental illness.
Of course, this causes issue to such a broad archetype of mental illness, as there is a wide spectrum of mental illnesses, and although some symptoms and signs are similar, there is always some vastly different area in which distinction between them is created. There is a common misconception of terms in the psychology community being interchangeable although they may a vastly different meaning, such as sociopath, psychopath, bipolar,
Much of the criminal activity that takes place today is heavily related to the lack of treatment for mental illness. According to the US National Library of Medicine, approximately 60% of shooter in mass shootings that took place in the United States after 1970 displayed symptoms of acute paranoia, delusions, and depression before committing their inhumane acts. I am sure that most of you are aware of the Sandy Hook shooting that took place on December 12, 2012. The perpetrator, Adam Lanza took the innocent lives of 20 students as well as the lives of 6 staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Lanza had displayed key signs of mental illness as young as the age of three.
We should be open about mental health, so that people are able to speak up and get help, but not to the point that mental illnesses are normalized, romanticized, and trivialized. So, stop glorifying them. Stop acting like it’s a choice. Stop acting like they are entertainment. Stop using them as an adjective.
For instance, of all the mass killers in the United States between 1900 and 2017, at least 59 percent have had been diagnosed with a mental disorder or displayed serious signs of mental illness[Duwe]. This may relate with the fact that the United States is among the lowest in mental health treatment in the first world, in addition to these findings, mass murderers are 20 times more likely to have a serious mental illness than the general population. one of the more common disorders that is shared among mass killers is known as “paranoid schizophrenia”, this mental illness gives the sufferer a feeling that large groups are out to get them, and are responsible for all of the misery in their life, they tend to be loners that do not trust easy, this leads to a extreme lack of a social life, which can create a dark hatred towards society as a whole. When a relationship between mental illness and mass killers are connected, an opposition voices that this could lead to a vast stigmatizing of all mentally ill people. This may very well be true, but society cannot ignore the connection, and should in fact put a positive spotlight to properly treat and contain these sadly ill
Why do the people of today still associate stigma, shame and blame with mental health issues? Mental health issues are extremely and widely misunderstood. Despite the fact one in four people are likely to experience some kind of mental health problem a year in the United Kingdom. “Mental health is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being and it affects how we feel, think and act. It also helps to determine how we handle situations such as stress, how we relate to others and how we make decisions.
In the past, mental health was easily overlooked and not considered a real issue because it is not physically visible by others. We have since learned that it is a very real and prominent issue that needs to be dealt with. Whether by the means of medication, therapy, or simple acknowledgement and support for what the individual is going through, all of these means of rehabilitation play a role in recovery and improving an individual’s well-being. Educating the public about the signs of individuals who may be under mental distress or illness could increase the likelihood that an intervention could be put into place before they harm themselves or before they harm others. This has become particularly prevalent within the media when it comes to shootings.
Mental Illness is not always manifested in one’s physical well-being and environment. A lot of the times, it actually comes down to being a chemical imbalance that causes a person to feel, hear, see and experience things the way they do. With “de-stigmatizing” the end goal would be many of those affected by illness seeking help and intervention. With the assistance of doctors as well as healthy coping mechanisms, small group therapy, and medication, a safety net of support can be created to further ensure the mental and even physical prosperity of the affected person. Intervention is key to feeling happy, secure, and
Mental illness is extremely important in ones’ health, many people suffer with mental disorders and don’t even know it. Often some can have the symptoms and don’t ever get it check out because they’ve dealt with it for so long to where it seems normal, and then there are those who fear embarrassment. I don’t think society really understands mental illness. There are more assumptions than truths when it comes down to mental disorder today. Miseducation is the blame I believe if everyone had a better understanding of what mental illness was and how to seek help when signs and symptoms occur would be a good start in the right direction.
