In the beginning, Dicey, Sammy, James, and Maybeth are going to Gram’s house after Momma leaves them. Arriving at Gram’s, she believed that having money for all of them would not be a possibility. At first, Gram does not want to have these children, reason being, is because of her own children who died or left her. During their time, Dicey and her siblings go off to school. Dicey finds school as stupid, and that it’s really boring. Her sister Maybeth is having issues in her school. She has a difficulty at learning, but when it comes to music, she excels. Dicey as promised cleans out the store in a week. At the house, while Dicey does school, Dicey finds that the boat that she builds is her escape. Also, Gram writes the children’s name in the Bible, which is important, because it shows that she cares for them, and shows that she has a second chance at being a parent. Back at school, Dicey makes a friend named Wilhelmina. Maybeth, although struggling with school work, because of her talent at music, receives piano lessons for five bucks an hour. Dicey soon learns to be social, and has her first party. In addition, while working at the store, Dicey learns that Milly has difficulty reading, and DIcey does not want Maybeth to meet the same fate. Maybeth’s teacher, because of her talent at music, receives free piano lessons. Her piano teacher also goes over for dinner with them. Later, Sammy gets in trouble for getting in the attic. Wilhelmina defends Dicey and the teacher finds it as truth, and gives her an A on her essay. Later, Jeff asks Dicey to the dance, but Dicey declines, stating that she is too young to go with someone who is in high school. Gram brings in news of a letter. In the letter, it talks about to going to Boston because of Momma. Gram and Dicey with extra money from Maybeth’s teacher, go on a plane to Boston. This is Dicey’s first time on a plane. Dicey and Gram go into a hotel for the night, and on the next day, Gram and Dicey visit Momma in the hospital. The nurse there tells them that Momma is dying. Gram tells Dicey to leave her alone for a while, and gives her one-hundred dollars. Because it was close to Christmas, Dicey goes into town and buys presents for everyone. She bought gloves for Gram, a plane for Sammy, and a music book for Maybeth. She then sleeps at the hotel by herself. The next morning, Dicey goes to Gram in the hospital and Gram explains to Dicey that Momma has passed away. In the end, Dicey and Gram cremate Momma, and take her home. They later meet up with everyone, and Dicey gives them their gifts. Back home, Gram shows them a photo album of her kids, Momma, Bullet, and her other
Sal and Gramps brought Gram’s coffin to Bybanks to always remember the good memories they had with gram before she got bitten by a snake and died on the road trip. In the text in chapter 44, paragraph 1, it says “Gram is buried in a aspen grove where she and grams were married.” This evidence shows that gram is buried in Bybanks to always be remembered before she got bitten by a snake.
Dally finally gets bored of teasing them and go gets food for himself. Ponyboy, Johnny and the girls start having conversations about their gangs. So now the girls need a ride and their boyfriends(which are socs) sees them walking with greasers and they get out and fuss a little and the girls get in the car and drive off. Johnny and Ponyboy stay out a little longer and the socs return. Johnny and Ponyboy where getting jumped and one of the greasers were drowning Ponyboy to death.
Mattie had to face many challenges along with characters in the book such as her mother, her grandfather, a young toddler Nell and Eliza. In this book Mattie Cook matures along her chaos and problems that she faces. Mattie showed maturity when she chose to take in a orphan. Along the way Mattie discovers a little toddler name Nell. In a corner Mattie finds Nell with a doll all alone.
Junie B. Jones gets on the school bus to head to head to her first day of school, but she can’t find anywhere to sit or anyone to sit with. When the bus arrives at school, all of the kids start pushing and steeping on Junie B Jones. Lucille tells Junie B that the mean kids on the bus like to pour chocolate milk on other kid’s heads for fun. At the end of the day when it’s time to get on the bus to go home, Junie B won’t get on the bus. Instead, she went and hid in a closet.
They start to save money in a piggy bank and Brian even pitched in. They eventually both make it to New York and invited Brian to join them. Over time all four siblings live in New York together. Jeannette has become a successful journalist and author. All three of the oldest children are thriving.

Grandfather falls asleep but mattie goes to get water. When she returns she falls asleep and dreams about her grandfather fighting in the war. When Mattie wakes up she is in the hospital. She asks a nurse how she got there and the woman said she was found ill and brought to the hospital, she got yellow fever but soon recovered. So Mattie and her grandfather return to their house but no one is there and windows were smashed and all there food was stolen.

Lyddie was a thirteen year old girl, and her father had left the family.
