Whispers. Nothing but whispers. It’s been two days since the unfortunate events surrounding Banquo’s death, and the police decided if they had no leads by the time of his funeral, the investigation would turn cold. Nobody for sure knows how he died, but they had their suspicions. The people at the forefront of these suspicions? My wife and I. Macbeth decided anyone they felt could compromise them any fashion, would be done away with. Eliza now realised she needed to tell the police everything she knew, and would not let anyone stand in her way. After work Eliza would rush to the police station and tell them what she knew. “ I don’t think that’s a good idea Eliza,” One of the other workers said concerned. “ If I don’t do this I couldn’t live with myself, i’m an accessory to this crime now, if they’re caught and the police find out I knew something I could go to jail too,” Eliza Stated. “Well just be careful, you don’t want to be the next victim,” the worker said walking away leaving Eliza alone. What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?—Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him.” In this Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking and talking.
Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth, focuses on the tumultuous events that surround a regicide. Despite being the shortest of Shakespeare’s plays, in his critical study of the play A. C. Bradley concludes that due to its vehement nature the audience is left with an impression “not of brevity but of speed” . The principal female character of Lady Macbeth is arguably one of his most contentious. Consumed with intense passion, ambition and greed she challenges the subservient role of the traditional Elizabethan woman. She has disturbed, horrified and intrigued both contemporary and modern audiences alike through her powerful diction.
The desire for personal gain trigger a tumult of heart-gripping fear and paranoia within Macbeth, disrupting his peace of mind and depriving him of the sleep and clear though necessary to conduct himself in a rational manner. “But let the frame of things disjoint, both the world suffer, ere we will eat our meal in fear, and sleep in the affliction of these terrible dreams that shake us nightly. Better be with the dead, whom we, to gain our peace, have sent to peace, than on the torture of the mind to lie in restless ecstasy….Oh, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife (III. ii.

Like men, she has the trait to be gruesome and diabolical in nature. She has determined for herself the course to be pursued and nothing can hinder her. She does not need the prophecy of the witches to urge her. She is aware of her strength and she is resolute in her aim. Knowing Macbeth’s weakness,

Unlike Macbeth, Banquo, from the beginning of this encounter, continues to doubt the witches, “I’th’name of truth are ye fantastical, or that indeed which outwardly ye show?” (1.3.51-52) Banquo didn’t believe what the witches were saying, he questions their intentions and accuses them of raising Macbeth’s hope.
