I prefer not to eat “The easiest way of life is the best”, Melville's lawyer, the narrator claims in the opening of Bartleby The scrivener : A story of Wall-street (1469). We can see the characters in the story are motivated by money and other provision such as food. These nicknames reveal who the characters truly are (1470). In melville's story we can see how much better the lawyer is financially then his employees. When re-reading the mysterious story something that struck me that gave me a new understanding of the text. In the following I will discuss how the theme of food is the key to understanding the mystery that is Bartleby the scrivener: a story of wall street.
When we are introduced to the various employee of the lawyer none of them

The Lawyer is a very interesting man. When it comes to food he is one of the only characters not associated with it as much. However we can learn about him seeing how he interacts with others. Clearly the lawyer cares very little for all of his employees. While some may argue he was helping his workers in reality he enables them. He lets the original three employees not work to full capacity and disregards any and all issues they face. He ignores Turkeys glutoney even though it affects how much he works, he ignores Nippers issues and he keeps Ginger Nut in a very low and mostly useless position.Something else to consider is that as the lawyer tells his story he only says the nicknames of his employees. Perhaps he considers them nothing more than “food” or “cattle”. It seems he only cares about what his workers can do for him instead of attempting to help them. Additionally he ignores the real problems of Bartleby and ultimately in some ways contributes to his death. It seems he is trying to just feel better about himself when talking to Bartleby but he only looks at the surface level. Ultimately the lawyer is a complicated and unusual man. He often goes back on what he says he will and is constantly changing his mind. The lawyer is a selfish and well off man who cares little about his
After reading Melville’s short story Bartleby the Scrivener, I started to think about how the story is relevant to today. Melville is able to capture the tedious and repetitious work environment of people who work in offices not only through the description of the office, but also through the interactions of the workers. In the story, Bartleby is put in an office space without a view to the outside world. Instead the lawyer positions him facing the a wall. The wall symbolizes the class difference between the two men.
pton Sinclair What if you found out that your hamburger meat was sitting in the factory for three days rotting before it was packaged, or that your food had rats running around it? How would you feel, if you food was prepared in dirty unsanitary conditions? This is how the food industry used to be, before striked laws were created after Upton Sinclair and several others discovered the dark secrets of the food industry, and what they did not tell you about the food that many people ate. On September 20, 1878, in Maryland Baltimore Upton Sinclair was born.
Throughout this novel, Laurie Halse Anderson incorporated seven vital foods that Melinda ate: Ho-Hos, Mashed potatoes, powdered doughnuts, Pop Tarts, the disgusting turkey soup, pizza, and the applesauce. Somes of these meals she ate alone, but other times she ate these meals with Heather and the other people in the cafeteria or even her parents. In the book How to Read Literature like a Professor, Foster claimed that food is used in novels to unite opposing sides in the chapter “Nice to eat with you: Acts of Communion.” This was shown in the book, Speak, as Melinda learned to become acquaintances and somewhat “friends” with Heather even though they have nothing in common. This type of situation was also emphasized when Melinda’s family ate
Is there really a way to decide if the food you are eating is healthy or not? Some people indulge in foods that are high in sugar, but still do not gain weight. Humans is known to have people who have a variety of body types, and along with that each person also has a different metabolism. Therefore, we breakdown foods very differently from one another. In “Resisting the Moralization of Eating,” Maxfield criticizes the way Michael Pollan decided to approach the issues in his article, “Escape from the Western Diet”.
"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants" the first sentences of Michael Pollen’s book “In Defense of Food”. The author mentions the food to our life in a various different way. The author makes the reader to curious the critical meaning of sciences, diet and product.
In this story, readers often debate whether the narrator is ultimately a friend or foe to Bartleby by analyzing their relationship. Through the narrator’s actions and responses to Bartleby, he poses more as a friend rather than just another tool to Bartleby’s downfall, showing how Melville uses their relationship to demonstrate the idea that despite general understandings that a
The idea of food here is negative, as the narrator uses the food imagery to his own benefit, with terms such as, ‘delicious self-approval’ and ‘sweet morsel for my conscience.’ The food language depicts the narrator in a negative light, though the narrator is perhaps sympathetic to Bartleby’s case, the narrator is interested only in what his helping Bartleby will do for his own ‘salvation.’ While Bartleby’s refusal to work and refusal to eat grow deeper, the narrator’s indulgence in his own idea expectation of Bartleby grows. Though not as explicit, the narrator exclaims he felt ‘goaded’ on to antagonize Bartleby into some different reaction than his expected preference not to. Though ‘goading’ in this sentence is used as a verb, as into incite someone or something, goad is also used as a noun, as an object that is used to drive cattle or other types of farm animals, presumably to slaughter and then consumption.

This story is about a quiet, lonely and stubborn law scribe Bartleby, he refused to carry out the task of boss, exclude the outside world, die to seal his cramped studio, was arrested after, finally select a hunger strike. I believe this story. Because Wall Street is a highly commercialized society, the pursuit of efficiency and profit maximization, is working as a procedural, standardized boring process. Work becomes a tedious labor, people become a slave to work. Wall Street office environment, have a kind of trample upon the power of human nature, the old lawyer to bart than marching orders for many times.
