Japan struck the United States with surprise. On December 7, 1941, Japanese aircraft bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii territory. Within a week, the United States declared war on Japan and joined the fight against the Axis Powers in World War II. Japan had many military vehicles in their presence that they could use. Even though Japan had destroyed much of the ships and airplanes stationed at the harbor, the United States was able to make a recovery and defeat Japan. Many battles were fought over Pacific islands as the U.S. tried to seize back control of the Pacific and ensure the victory over the Axis Powers. The production of newly advanced aerial and naval military craft helped the United States defeat Japan during World War II. Japan attacked over the Pacific Ocean by using their superior aircraft carriers to block and counter strike the U.S. and Allied forces. Japan war commissioner commissioned a new project to influence japan's authority over by use of their deadly destroyers and surgical attacks by their Navy. The article Battle of Leyte Gulf (2018) regards the battle as “decisive air and sea battle of World War II that crippled the Japanese Combined Fleet”. The Japanese knowing the US would fight, had pulled a decoy mission to draw away the US fleet to attack the landing. US Navy submarines noticed the First Attack Force and immediately responded by sinking two heavy cruisers. This put the Japanese to a big disadvantage and the US started doing heavy damage to the Japanese fleet. The article Battle of Leyte Gulf also states, “...battleships and cruisers from the Seventh Fleet destroyed C Force and forced the Second Attack Force to withdraw.” After this battle, the US had regained most of the control over the

The United States wanted the volcanic islands of Japan to be able to control the mainland of Japan and with Japan’s navy being weakened due to multiple situations, such as a lack of oil. The United States say this as a sign of weakness and began to attack the volcanic islands south of Japan. These attacks took out the Japanese navy fronts stationed in the islands and put the Japanese navy in a standstill in terms of being effective in the war efforts. The United States gained control of the Mariana Islands and Guam. The B-29s that were stationed in the Mariana Islands would help aid the American forces when they decided to try to conquer Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945.
This put the US on the offensive attack while the Japanese were forced to retreat back and be on the defensive. The US was able to take back the Philippines from the Japanese while being led by the two man show of the Pacific fleet with General MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz. This would all lead to Guadalcanal, Operation Cartwheel, the advancement through the multiple small islands of the Pacific, Iwo Jima, and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. All of this would not have been possible without the Battle of Midway. Despite the Japanese having the advantage in numbers it was their poor planning that ultimately led to their defeat.
The war in the Pacific against Japan was fought largely by carrier and
A huge breakthrough came when a man named Joseph Rochefort broke the Japanese code and foretold of an attack on the two islands of midway that the Japanese were interested in. Japans goal in this was to lure out the rest of Americas pacific fleet and destroy them. Luckily for Americans they had no idea that we knew what they were going to do. The Pacific Fleet Including the USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, USS Yorktown, and all of the supporting ships went to Midway and waited for the Japanese to get there. The battle began on June 4th, 1942 approximately 6 months after the devastation of Pearl
However, this conflicted relationship prevented a solidified military strategic vision, with both leaders working against each other to sway the Emperor. By the spring of 1942, Japan had attacked the US bases in Hawaii and in the Philippines, controlled the Dutch Indies, Wake Island, Guam, Thailand, and Burma. The Japanese intended to establish control over the Pacific region and were successful in the execution of their offensive through the late winter of 1942. During the operational pause in early 1942, there were several options the Japanese could have taken to avoid the defeats suffered over the remainder of the war.

December 7, 1941 is considered one of the most impactful days in United States’ history: the day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Despite their size, Japan left an incredible amount of damage with their 5 submarines and 408 planes. President Roosevelt had been avoiding scuffling with Japan since their pact with Germany and Italy; war with Germany was sure to erupt soon enough. However, soon after the ambuscade, the United States’ declared war on Japan and launched their involvement in World War II. Japan’s leaders recognized the risks of invading one of America’s naval bases; yet they persisted.
Battle of Midway Within six minutes after American bombers had spotted three Japanese carriers, all 3 had been critically damaged and doomed to sink to the bottom of the ocean (Battle of Midway at a Glance). The Battle of Midway was meant to be a critical base to launch aircraft from for attacks against Pearl Harbor (Battle of Midway at a Glance). Although the Japanese had a very well devised plan that probably would have succeeded, they were caught by an ambush that would wipe out most of their Pacific Fleet. The Battle of Midway proved to be a decisive victory for the U.S. and a critical defeat for Japan.
When Japan attacked pearl harbor the United States finally joined World War II. During this period the Allies fought in the Pacific and went after Japan. High casualties from this war because of island hopping in Japan and kamikazes dropped onto U.S ships were devastating and fueled the continuing of the war. As Japan refused to surrender new methods were developed to try and end the war once and for all. Wanting to save American lives, Truman decided to use an atomic bomb on Japan which led to it being dropped on Hiroshima and a few days later Nagasaki, ultimately moving the emperor of Japan to surrender.
Rahul Bagga Mr.Campbell US History, Period 0 16 December 2015 Why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor? One day that will always be remembered by America is the date of December 7, 1941, which changed American history forever. December 7, 1941 was the day the Japanese warplanes attacked Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) which stationed many of American ships and airfields. Immediately after the bombings, United States President Franklin Roosevelt declared war on Japan, leading to a direct involvement into World War ll. Japan had many reason to do so but Japan attacked Pearl harbor for three reasons which were that they had a plan for a new world order, United States were expanding their number of naval ships rapidly, and an oil embargo was placed upon Japan
On December 7, 1941, nearly twenty American ships and over 300 airplanes were destroyed, and about 2,500 men were tragically killed in addition to the 1,000 that were wounded. This was the outcome of over 350 Japanese fighter planes who bombed the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. On December 8 following the attack, Congress approved President Roosevelt’s declaration of war against Japan. Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States and America had officially entered the Second World War. Following the assault, Americans soon grew fearful that Japanese-Americans already living in the United States would help Japan with future surprise attacks.

Japan planned to expand their land and gain resources- which led them to invade China whom was an ally of the U.S. In result, the United States cut off the supply of oil to Japan. On December 7th 1941, Japan’s air force did a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor because that is where their military base is located.
There are four battles that as a whole make up the Battle of Leyte Gulf : Battle of Sibuyan Sea, Battle of Surigao Strait, Battle of Cape Engano and Battle of Samar. After General MacArthur’s arrival, Japan went on the defensive and constructed the Sho-Go or Operation Victory. Their goal was to “decoy the U.S. Third Fleet north away from the San Bernardino Strait, while converging three forces on Leyte Gulf to attack the landing” (Britannica). Once this was
