Most serial killers have different reasons why they kill, but there are some things most of them have in common. Serial killers have many different reasons for committing murders, which can differ from person to person. This is part of the reason that they become serial killers. They feel like they do not fit in with society and are different from everyone in a bad way. An excerpt that alludes to this is, “Their childhood of abuse and neglect makes them feel like misfits and powerless in society, which elicits in them feelings of both social and sexual inadequacy” (Marinelli). Being socially inadequate may lead to a serial killer to become who they are. When someone feels like they aren't enough, they sometimes do whatever it takes to have the feeling of security and a sense of belonging. This can sometimes be a motive in why serial killers do what they do, just because they don’t fit in. Serial killers feel like they don’t have to follow social rules because they do not know right from wrong socially. A quote that depicts this best is, “Serial killers also appear to lack a sense of social conscience. Through our parents, siblings, teachers, peers, and other individuals who influence us as we grow up, we learn to distinguish right from wrong. It is this that inhibits us from engaging in anti-social behaviour. Yet serial killers seem to feel they are exempt from the most important social sanction of all” (Parrington). A person may hear the word Sociopath and anticipate that they are a serial killer. However, not every person who is diagnosed with Sociopathy has the urge to dispatch all that they encounter. For example, an article was printed about a woman who was scrutinized for having Sociopathy, but she was never a serial killer. She was visiting Washington D.C. one year when she confronted a man who was inflicting her. She felt the excitement and adrenaline rush through her body as she thought the thought of choking this man to death, but she never did.
We can all come to an agreement that serial killers are both horrendous and unpredictable human beings. Most acts of violence we hear about are committed by serial killers. Unsatisfied with their previous actions, serials killers look to execute more victims. In most cases, the upbringing of the individual plays a huge role on the killer. Because of their twisted techniques and motives, some of these killers are infamously known to be the most frightening criminals in history.
The typical childhood of a serial killer may involve abuse, bedwetting, drugs/alcohol, antisocial, interest with fire, and cruelty to animals. Serial killers get more aggressive as they kill more people because they get a thrill from it. Fantasies effect serial killers because they can trigger something in their minds that turn into actions instead of just thoughts.
