7 Beneficial Health Communication and Social Marketing Campaigns
Over 3.6 million nurses registered nurses (RNs) practice in the United States. [1] RNs represent the largest body of professional talent in country and serve as the foundation of health care services for the entire nation.
Preparing for the next Plateau
In 2010, the Affordable Care Act served as a catalyst that steered the focus of the American health care system toward population health. The discipline promotes preventative care as a means for citizens to stay healthy, avoid serious illnesses, and reduce emergency room visits as well as hospitalizations. To successfully advance this agenda, registered nurses must seek advanced training.
In this regard, United States nursing associations are urging RNs to trade up from pursuit of the traditional Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) accreditation to the new nursing standard of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) credential. This intensive learning track prepares advanced nurses to play an enhanced role in promoting the well-being of the population.
What Makes Populations Healthy?
As early as 2003, doctors David Kindig and Greg Stoddart defined population as ““the health outcomes of a group of individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group.” [2] This

[5] The program advises citizens to consume 5 to 9 helping of these nutritious foods every day. The National Cancer Institute and the Produce for Better Health Foundation launched the program in 1991. Since then, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken the lead of this successful population health initiative. Today, the FDA collaborates with the National Cancer Institute, the Produce for Better Health Foundation, the United States Department of Agriculture, the American Cancer Society, and other population health advocates to deliver this message to the
Advanced practice nurses (APN) have a vital role in the future of health care, especially since the enactment of the Affordable Health Care Act. With more citizens having health insurance coverage they will be seeking health care providers, and there are not enough physicians to care for them all. According to Letiziam (2014), advance practice nurses are licensed autonomous health care providers that have been trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients and their conditions. Advanced practice nursing is an umbrella that covers four separate roles of nurses, this includes: the certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), certified nurse practitioner (CNP), and certified nurse specialist (CNS).
These studies illustrates that NPs can play a key role in providing services to health care market. NPs provide a full range of high quality care to patients of all ages. These services include primary care, acute care, special health care services such as oncology, gerontology health, or women’s health to name a few (American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), 2015). NPs practice in many health settings, including private physician office, hospital, urgent care site, emergency room, community health center, school, and others. Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) are NPs are primary care providers who focus on
My knowledge in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) continues to expand as I progress through the DNP program. The knowledge I have attained while in the study of the DNP I and DNP II is priceless. For example, recognizing stakeholders and utilizing networking has helped me to progress on my DNP project (Gokenbach, 2012). I also have a better understanding as well as the purpose of a DNP project. My mentors have been great in directing me in remaining on the right track.
Recently the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) became a very important profession due to the major changes in the healthcare system and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) goals that focus on providing patients with affordable but quality care, improving patient health outcomes, expanding care to the underserved areas, and lowering the costs. It became apparent that over the years nurses played an important role in healthcare system. According to the National Governors Association (2012) “The demand for primary care services in the United States is expected to increase over the next few years, particularly with the aging and growth of the population and the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)” (p. 1). In addition,
Despite accepting advanced roles and responsibilities APRNs have often encountered various barriers in the delivery of effective health care based on the variability in the legislative requirements endorsed by various states. To overcome these barriers and improve the delivery of healthcare the Consensus Model for APRNs has been endorsed by 41 various nursing organizations focusing on defining the roles, population foci and implementation strategies across the nation (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2017). Creating a standard expectation regarding the practice of APRNs will help to foster more consistent, quality education APRN programs nationwide (Rounds, Zych, & Mallary,
Working with state office leadership to develop policies and procedures based on evidenced based practices is crucial to the health of the public. The director attends county board of health meetings to professionally represent nursing and converse with board members to identify interventions to assist with addressing the needs of their community. These responsibilities highlight the need for all public health nurses, especially those in leadership roles, to have a BSN degree. As pointed out, the opportunities for a nurse transitioning from an AD position to a BSN position are diverse and endless. Patients, healthcare facilities and the nursing profession benefit from advanced degree nurses.
After 10 years working as a registered nurse in many aspects of healthcare, felt an overwhelming desire to advance my career and myself to expand my role in caring for others. Becoming a nurse practitioner has always been a goal of mine. During my time working as a nursing manager, I became acutely aware of the need of skilled and talented providers that desire to provide passionate care to all individuals. I became especially concerned with the needs those with limited access to healthcare services. I knew my desire to care for individuals in a more autonomous role and I set out to develop the skills needed to meet the need I witnessed.
In this unit, I learned how communication and marketing health promotion needs to be target to the specific audience to have a substantial outcome. Thorough assessment about the community and audience is required before finding the proper communication tools and marketing for health promotion. For example, communication about disaster preparedness would be different between young adults versus an older population. Communication and marketing about disaster to younger adults would be effective through social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.). However, for older adults, other sources of communication for disaster preparedness would be needed because less older adults utilize social media.

The complexity of our population and the evolution of our health care system have forced the implementation of changes to the nursing profession. Even though the main function of the nurse as educator has not changed, the way that nurses and health professionals provide care to patients, families and communities has changed over time and it will continues to change as we facing new challenges (Grand Canyon University, 2011) . Health promotion education and preventing care is the future of nursing. Evidence-based practice (EBP) and technology evolution will be the tools that will allow nurses and providers to adjust to the new challenges and to be able to deliver effective and outstanding care to our better educated and more demanding population.
The DNP student stated that she has not implemented her project yet and it could not be discussed at the moment. The DNP student did discuss on how everyone, whether a nurse or not, can advocate for the community. The DNP discussed on the pros on advancing one’s education. DNP essential eight: Advanced Nursing Practice is not just entitiled to practice in hospitals. These individuals practice in hospitals, clinics, home health, and in the
With the ongoing healthcare demands and shortages, the appropriate role and responsibilities of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) will continue to be a controversial debate. There were many points addressed in your post that I agree and don’t agree with. It is most certainly not arguable that physicians do endure a longer, more intense education. I personally believe their role as a hospitalist is valuable and should never be discredited for their knowledge and expertise. However, I also believe that they are doing their patients a disservice if they are being overworked due to provider shortages.
They assess, diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses as well as preventative healthcare for individuals and families. As their care is family-centered, they must also be able to understand the relevance of the family’s identified community. In addition to the nine essentials as outlined by the AACN, the FNP must meet competencies in advanced health assessment skills in order to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings. They should able to use screening and diagnostic strategies to develop diagnosis and they must be able to prescribe medications to enable them to work as independent practitioners (Competencies for Nurse Practitioners, 2012). In order to meet these competencies, the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation (2008) requires three separate graduate-level courses in advanced physiology and pathophysiology, health assessment and pharmacology as well as appropriate clinical experiences across the age
As there continues to be an initiative to improve quality healthcare while simultaneously reducing costs, the importance of the nurse with advanced education in transforming healthcare delivery and healthcare policy will continue to grow. Opportunities for nurse managed health clinics, quality nursing research to improve evidence based practice, leadership of multidisciplinary health management teams and change agents in health policy and improved patient outcomes make the nurse with advanced education the “escape fire” in health care now and in the
In order to be physically, mentally/intellectual and socially/intrapersonal well and healthy, we must processed some of these traits: First is physically healthy. How can someone be physically fit? Well ofc, you must recognize the need for physical activity. Optimal wellness is met through the combination of good exercise and good eating habits. Us people, have the belief that it is better to consume foods and beverages that enhance good health rather than those which impair it.
