Introduction
As an executive agency of the Department of Health and Social Care, Public Health England (PHE) was established on April 1, 2013. Its mission is to protect and improve the health and well-being of the nation and reduce health inequalities. In order to keep people safe, it is its first responsibility to respond to environmental hazards and infectious diseases. Thus, PHE is responsible for assisting in the prevention of risks and responding to incidents when they occur, as in the case of the Coronavirus outbreak. In addition, PHE advocates for policies that promote cleaner air and better mental health care, as well as encourages people to quit smoking, eat more healthily, and lose weight in order to prevent illness. Physical activity is also a component of PHE that aims to promote health.
In the first instance, the World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being rather than

This campaign aims to address the factors that lead to poor mental health. Every mind matters campaign is run by NHS England which offers a tool to improve mental health called ‘my mind plan’. This campaign aims to help people to build new skills and confidence so they can look after themselves and each other. To achieve this, they suggest to people what they should do if they have mental health problems (mentalhealth.org.uk).
World Health Organization (WHO, 2017) defines mental health as awareness and appropriate use of one's strengths for the benefit of one's community. The concept of health is influenced by a wide range of complex factors, including biological, psychological, social, cultural, economic, and spiritual ones. In addition to their biological and psychological components, health and mental illness have concurrent social dimensions and
The social determinants of health impact both chronic physical conditions and mental health. Key aspects of prevention include increasing physical activity, access to nutritious foods, ensuring adequate income and fostering social inclusion and social support. This creates opportunities to enhance protective factors and reduce risk factors related to aspects of mental and physical
Mental health is a state of psychological well-being. According to World Health Organization (WHO) mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." (Organization, WHO 2001) However, cultural differences, race, ethnicity, personal background, subjective assessment, and socioeconomic status all affect how mental health is defined. This variation in definitions of mental health between different sects of our society further causes drift in methods of treatment, and may cause the burden of mental health to be greater on some cultures.
I have been working in the care industry for the past three years. During these three years I 've had the opportunity to work within different care settings, from the elderly, learning disability, challenging behaviours and supported live in to name a few. Throughout this period I managed to obtain countless caring skills working in a community and hospital setting. In addition to this, it also improved my ability to communicate and interact effectively with others in a friendly and professional way at the same time. I believe I have an authentic interest in all
Changes are regularly being monitored by the NHS to ensure its policies, legislation, regulations and codes of practice are suitable and precise to the changing ethnic, financial and cultural backgrounds of the population. The health and Social Care Act 2012 stands as the most common legislation guiding the health and social care field within the UK. It offers for the most widespread reorganization of the structure of the National Health Service in England. It allows policies for managers within the health and social care sector, professional responsibility which will empower them.
Introduction Generally speaking individuals view the symptoms of mental illness as being experienced and expressed in the same fashion across all cultures. They believe that a set channel of symptom expression is the same for every individual regardless of culture or ethnicity. Recent research into cultural expression of symptomatology has revealed that not every culture experiences mental illness in much the same way. In fact research has revealed that culture plays a large role in how mental illness is viewed and experienced (Wong, 2010).
Healthcare providers must recognize and address the cultural and social context of mental health disabilities and how they impact individuals from different backgrounds. That may involve considering the impact of language, culture, and religion on mental health and wellness and working to provide culturally sensitive care (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2021). Mental health is a critical aspect of overall health and well-being. It can affect individuals in various ways, and people with mental health disabilities often face significant challenges.
Yet another is that even by the definitions offered it is obvious that there is ‘Mental Health’ and there is and there is ‘Mental Illness,’ however, there is no clear definition of ‘Good Mental Health,’ being the opposite end of the spectrum. The Canadian Mental Health Association has said the following on their Toronto-based website: ‘Definitions of mental health are changing. It used to be that a person was considered to have good mental health simply if they showed no signs or symptoms of a mental illness. But in recent years, there has been a shift towards a more holistic approach to mental health. (CMHA Toronto Website,2015.)
Before we look at the different Social/Psychological Determinants of Health it is important firstly to define what a social determinant of health is. According to the World Health Organization (2017) “The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age.” These conditions are as a result of a wide range of factors that are ultimately governed by the way in which money, power and specific resources are shared at different levels including those at global, national and local levels. We have all been a part of and will experience different social determinants of health throughout our lives but it is the standard at which we experience these determinants that will ultimately lead onto them affecting our health or ultimately leaving us unaffected. The Social Determinants of Health which I am going to examine include • Education • Unemployment • Stress • Living Conditions • Cultural Norms.

I strongly value my health and believe that health is our greatest form of wealth. When one lives a healthy lifestyle, it means more opportunities to explore the world, build families, achieving anything the heart desires and conquering personal goals. The behavior change philosophy fits my personal philosophy of health education the most because it involves goal setting, behavioral contracts and self-monitoring to help foster the modification of an unhealthy habit. The behavior change philosophy is very important because change is a process, not an event. Self-efficacy and motivation are key factors in successful behavior changes.
A recent study by The American College of Sports Medicine discovered that a whopping 35% of athletes regularly struggle with disordered eating, burnout, depression and/or anxiety. This number has only increased in recent years, and is becoming more evident with athletes bringing their mental health struggles to light. The article “A Game Changer for Mental Health: Sports Icons Open Up,” explains first hand accounts of some famous athletes who are struggling, and brings light to those who may doubt that one’s mental health is really “that bad”. The use of professional opinions, first-hand accounts from athletes struggling with mental health, and the use of emotional appeal are what makes the article “A game changer for mental health: sports
In short, the biological model of health is mainly defined from the absence of disease, from the model that is well-matched with positive meanings in relation to balance of normal functioning. The social model health is actually a positive state of well-being and wholeness linked with however this is not mainly explained from the non-existence of disease, physical, mental impairment and illness (Gross, 2010). Overall the concepts of ill health and health are not balanced. Non-existences of disease might be part of health, however health is considered more than the “absence of disease”.
However, mental health can be causes by many different factors, for instance unemployment or a lower living standard (Nocon & Owen, 2006). Moreover, the lifestyle of individuals, e.g. whether they smoke, drink alcohol, are stressed, their diet and amount of physical activity all contribute on their health statuses, and can be especially related to cardiovascular diseases or diabetes (Nocon & Owen, 2006). Nevertheless, these risk factors can all be addressed and
Mental health is a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of mental illness. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioural adjustment”. From the perspective of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an individual 's ability to enjoy life, and create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, inter-generational dependence, and self-actualization of one 's intellectual and emotional potential, among others”
When exploring what is health, it looks at the idea of an individual being free from illness or injuries (World Health Organization 1948). WHO further explains that it is the state of complete: physical, mental, and social well-being and not the absence of disease or infirmity (health context, 2018) In 1986 during Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, WHO said health is a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living, also is a positive concept emphasizing social, personal resources, and physical capacities. There are different aspects that contribute and impact a person’s health such as their: family and friends, education or job, body, spirit and mind, and all these need to balance to ensure good health (health context, 2018).
