Alka-Seltzer is a medical drug that works as a pain reliever and an antacid. The pain reliever used is aspirin and the antacid used is baking soda. The Cherokee people used plants for medicinal use. In fact, some plants had more than one use. Take the Qua lo ga, or common Sumac, for example. This plant can be made into a tea that helps to reduce fevers, or can be a decoction, which is the liquor resulting from concentrating the essence of a substance by heating or boiling. Common Sumac decoction can be gargled for sore throats and diarrhea.
After reading the powerful novel, Make Lemonade, written by Virginia Wolff, I reflect on the life of a young woman living in poverty. It takes you on the life journey of 17 year-old, single mother Jolly, opening your eyes to the lives of less fortunate people. Many interventions occur throughout the novel. Towards the end of the book, Jolly joins the Mom’s up program for young mothers, so she can receive an education which will hopefully result in a higher paying job in the future. At school, Jolly heard a sorrowful story about a blind woman and understands the meaning of it.

This post is going to be on an extremely important topic, diabetes. 1 in 4 people with diabetes, don’t even know they have it! This topic truly impacted me because both of my grandfathers that have already passed away had diabetes, so honestly diabetes is something that could be in my future. Recently, I read Sugar Nation by Jim O’Connell and I was pretty shocked from reading it and it opened my eyes to how severe the diabetes problem is in the world. The book is basically Mr. O’Connell’s recollection of being diagnosed pre-diabetic, his journey to find more information on treatment and how effective it is, and Mr. O’Connell’s father passing away from not taking care of his diabetes.
Poison ivy, oak, and sumac contain an oil called urushiol which is readily absorbed through the skin and elicits dermatitis. Poison ivy, oak, and sumac are extremely common sources of dermatitis rashes that affect people from every age group; although, sensitivity can decrease with age. The reason for this is its ability to elicit an allergic reaction in the skin which is caused by the oily resin urushiol. Armstrong and Epstein state that it only takes 50 micrograms of urushiol to cause a reaction in most people. This is about the same amount as a grain of salt.
Winters in Florida can be great. When the rest of the country is buried under a foot of snow Floridians are slipping on their flip flops and heading to the beach. One thing that I do not like about Florida winters is most weeks we experience all four seasons in one week. We may start and end the week with 80-degree sunny weather but during the week we wake up one day and it is 27 the next morning it rains followed by 75 then back to 30. We can have a severe frost on Monday and be in shorts by Friday.

There are many things that some plants can provide. “Smudge ourselves real good with sweetgrass or cedar first. Get cleansed so we can approach it with respect” (page 166). The smoke that is given off of the burning sweetgrass is well knows to purify the body, heart, and soul. Traditional medicinal plants like the Wiike (wee-kay) root, can take away the pain from a sore throat.
Salves can accomplish the task of healing diabetic wounds due to the explicit features imparted to them by their constituents.
