In the book Tangerine by Edward Bloor, the choices made by one character have a big effect on the main character, Paul. Paul's older brother, Erik, is shown to be a bully throughout the book and we can see how that affects Paul and his character's growth. A bully can be very easily described as someone who harasses and attempts to intimidate others, especially those who would be considered weaker or more vulnerable. Bullying has always been a problem and it's interesting to see now how it's changed from the 90s to now. Erik, who we have already established as Paul's brother, is our main bully. Cyberbullying is something that is almost impossible to avoid. When someone is harassing you face to face you can report them to the school or avoid them by staying home, but cyberbullying is very hard to dodge. People feel a sense of power when bullying behind a screen. No one knows of their true identity and some of these internet trolls will go through whatever means possible to hurt you. You can block these accounts but it's very easy for them to just continue making more. Online bullying can sometimes be even more embarrassing for the victim as first it can be shared to so many more people and second because the internet is forever. He was different from them, he had these thick glasses that couldn’t be easily hidden and made it very obvious to the world that he couldn’t see very well. People made fun of Paul and gave him mean nicknames before they even got to know what he was like. They bullied him because he looked different. People who bully want to feel power over someone, they want to feel better then them so kids who act differently or look differently are almost always targeted. This still proves to be true today, as middle school has shown me if you look,talk,act differently than others. Someone will point it out and someone will make fun of you for it simply because they can. My little sister Cheyenne has a bit of a lazy eye and needs to wear glasses and an eye patch at times. She has come home in tears before stating that someone made fun of her eye patch or laughed at her eyes. Paul had to detach his emotions and suppress them to prevent himself from going mad. He forgot what civilian life was like before war. He ended up becoming like an animal, by learning to kill by instinct to survive. Before war, Paul was a sensitive and passionate person.
Upon his return from leave, Paul states, “I can hardly control myself any longer. But it will soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong.” (201). Paul has become increasingly drawn away from people at home and toward his comrades from the battlefield.
But Paul had empathy for them. He thought of them much like himself. Throughout the story Paul has a very caring personality. He is very strong, mentally and physically. The physical strength came from the extensive training from Himmelstoss.
Paul shows how bad of a guy he is with the way he reacts and treats Rashad after Rashad was accused of theft. The way that He tried to hide from it and not think about it shows that he knows he did something wrong and is just too scared to admit it. Not only did he abuse his power but because of that he put an innocent man in the hospital.
Paul has always been treated unfairly. He mostly gets ignored by his parents. There are several ways that this could relate to real-world situations. Such as the parents having a Golden Child and favoring them over their other children, there could also be competitions between the two siblings to see who's better or to explain this better,
A moment when Paul encountered his insanity is when he talked with
“I tried to get Tino to come inside, but he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t talk to me or even look at me. ”(Bloor 206) Paul started worrying. Could he have lost a real friend because of his brother?
This choice affected Paul negatively in many ways. Paul suffered a lot throughout his childhood. He was bullied, made fun of, and he felt left out. His eyes were always a big issue with him, all because his brother didn't make the right choice and in the wrong time.
He wasn’t afraid anymore which positively impacts Paul through the story. Similarly, Paul fought for his opinion on page 228, when Paul tells Tino that they should be able to go to his house without living in fear of his brother. He was fed up with his brother, he was now taking a stand. He didn’t just want to be a bystander of Erik’s actions anymore. This affected Paul because of Luis he started to stand up for himself
Not many victims does this for fear of retaliation; nonetheless some victims are brave enough to fight back. The effects of bullying will affect the victim’s future as they grow up to become adults. If this issue continues, he/she has a right to report the incident or fight back their bullies. All forms of bullying, including cyber-bullying, are considered intolerable and criminal at school. Bullying occurs when the bully fights or insults the victims to the point of fighting back or seeking help from someone trustworthy to prevent their issue of being bullied.
They can use any methods which may cause terrible damage for the sufferers’ mind, just to diminish the social status of whom they are bullying. In general, the goal to be achieved is raising and spreading their own power and dishonoring the others. Lastly, the motivation of online bullying is to ease the boredom. It may not surprising that the minority of perpetrators see this cruelty as the source of entertainment and others are too cowed to protest.
If you or others are being cyberbullied, do not hesitate to report immediately to your parents or teacher. If you just ignored the cyberbully occurred, it will never solve the problem. Let say if you are scared or cannot stop it, support the person who being bullied by giving him or her some supportive words and moral advices. At very least, you can help by not joining the cyberbullying occurred and give support to the person doing the bullying. Do not forget to save the evidences just in case things escalate.
