Why Call of the Wild Should Not Be Banned From Schools.
Written in 1903, the extraordinary story Call of the Wild by Jack London has been banned, burned, and challenged due to the themes of Individualism, radical freedom, and bloody violence that pervade through the story. I believe this novel should not be removed from high school libraries.
Biography.
The author of Call of the Wild John Griffith Chaney, later known as Jack London, was born on January 12, 1876, in San Francisco, California. Jack, the name he had begun to use as a child, was the son of unmarried mother Flora Wellman and William Chaney, an attorney, journalist and American astrologist. His mother ended up marrying John London, a Civil War veteran, who moved his new family around

The year he had survived a terrifyingly distressing sealing voyage, one in which a typhoon had nearly taken out London and his entire crew. The seventeen-year-old teen had made it home in one piece to tell the tale to his mother. When she saw an announcement in one of the local papers for a writing contest, she pushed her son to write down and submit the story of his sealing voyage. But despite having only an eighth-grade education, London won the twenty-five dollar first prize, beating college students from Berkeley and Stanford. For London, the contest was a life changing experience, and it was then that he decided to begin his life of writing short stories. But the young Jack London had trouble finding willing publishers. After taking a chance on the East Coast, he returned to California and briefly enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley, before heading north to Canada to try his hand at a small fortune in the gold rush happening in the Yukon. He then returned to California, still determined to make a living as an aspiring writer. His experience in the Yukon had convinced him he had stories to tell. In 1899 he began publishing stories in the Overland Monthly. The experience of writing and getting published greatly disciplined London as a
Some of the stories he wrote were called The Call of The Wild, White Fong, and the Sea Wolf. At the age of twenty-seven, Jack London found success in the call of the wild, which was one of his last famous books. Jack London is often known for his personal exploits, which meant his personality as colorful and controversial. Between 1900 and 1916, Jack London completed
London wrote at least one thousand words every day and published over 50 books during the twentieth century alone("Jack London Biography."). This includes his poem, “The Sea Sprite and the Shooting Star.”
“All American Boys” by Jason Reynolds is a fiction book and teaches its readers about racism and police brutality. This book alone gives reason why we should never ban fiction books from students. If the school board banned all fiction books from students, I would not have learned more about racism and how it greatly affects police brutality. “Because racism was alive and real as shit.
In the 21st century, many books are challenged and banned for their content, some of these include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Animal Farm, and Fahrenheit 451. Many of the reasons given for banning are the same. The reasons include violence, language, symbols, and religion. This makes it very difficult for educational professionals; which books should be taught and which ones should be banned, when does protection become unnecessary censorship? Although Fahrenheit 451 shows some dark themes such as banning books, disregard for human life, and suicide, it should be included in the school curriculum because it shows the dystopian future that awaits the world if the events in the book become a reality.
So why not let them better prepare themselves by reading a more challenging and mature book. Therefore, I believe that school board members should not ban books from the school library because, students can get more of a challenge from certain books, you also can get many life lessons from a more mature book, and students also get more of a choice which means more books to read. So I think it is completely wrong to ban books from the school
Some people believe that books should not be banned from schools because they need to learn what happened. The first reason is that the books can be about our history and they used some words that are know bad. In the book Animal Farm “The three hens who had been ringleaders in the attempted rebellion over the eggs now came forward and stated that snowball had appeared to them in their dreams and incited to disobey napoleon 's orders” (Orwell 84).The book Animal Farm by George Orwell is a good book, but on page 84 the leader of the farm murdered 3 hens because they were rebelling to save their kids. Some people think that Animal Farm should be banned for having murder in the book but thats what happened back then during the russian revolution.
There have been over 11,300 books that have been challenged since 1982. Book banning has been happening for centuries and should be stopped. Authors should have the right to write about whatever they want without having to worry about if it is appropriate or not. All of these reasons are what brings us to the many cons of banning books. As a result, many people believe books should not be banned in school/libraries because they should not have the right to take books away from everyone.
Jack London 's writing is harsh poetry. He describes scenes in such detail. Reading his work makes you picture how the scenes look in your head. He shows a deeper meaning in the events of his stories(Napierkowski). The point of view of the story is third person limited omniscient.
Jack London, born in San Francisco California on January 12, 1876 to Flora Wellman and William Henry Chaney(“Jack London”1). Later, his father left and his mother remarried John London. Poe began writing outstanding stories and poems and entered a competition that would impact his life as a writer. In 1835, Poe ultimately got a job as an editor for a newspaper company because of a contest he won with his story, “The Manuscript Found in a Bottle”. (A Short Biography of Edgar Allan Poe). Getting his story published had a positive impact on Poe, but he always felt that something was missing in his life. Poe missed Mrs. Clemm and Virginia
Short stories and parables serve many industrious purposes in the modern world; even those written in past times. Two faintly similar, and yet parallel opposite short stories include “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence and “The Prodigal Son” by St Luke. Each has a common involvement of money, but with a unique theme and author’s purpose. One advantage of reading and understanding short stories is to learn from them, and both of these stories bring in a valuable lesson which is applicable to life. “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D. H. Lawrence is a slightly disturbing short story that has a general theme of money.
Jack London’s career started when the new printing technology enabled low-cost production of magazines, which grew the interest of the public on popular magazines aimed at a strong market for short fiction. By 1900, Jack London mad about $2,500 in writing, which is approximately $71,000 in today’s currency. Among his short stories sold to magazines were “Diable” (1902), “Batard” (1904), “To Build a Fire” (1908), and “The Call of the Wild,” which he sold to the Saturday Evening Post in early 1903 for $750, and the book rights to Macmillan for $2000. The Call of the Wild is known to be one of his most celebrated works (Wikipedia, Aug 2014).
Although other writings of London’s have been criticized as being too sensational and written without much thought, “To Build a Fire” is still considered an American Classic literary piece of work. London based “To Build a Fire” on his personal travels as he traveled across the unforgiving terrain through Canada to Alaska during the Klondike gold rush. Although London was praised for his descriptive and vivid explanation of the harsh conditions of the Klondike, by what is called the “Snark Voyage” it was mirrored in some regards to Jeremiah Lynch’s “Three Years in the Klondike (1904), “as described in Jack London and the Klondike (Walker and Century
With the $300, London bought a sloop named the Razzle Dazzle; he became an oyster pirate and poacher. In 1894, he spent a month in jail on vagrancy charges; in the jail London witness many horrors of “human degradation”. After being released from jail, London educated himself at the Oakland Public Library. He was admitted to the University of California in 1896; however, he was forced to leave due to financial issues (“Jack” 1). In 1897, London moved to the Canadian Yukon to join the Klondike Gold Rush; he experienced many hardships like malaria, scurvy, and dysentery that left his health severely damaged (American
When he was just nine years old, he clearly wrote what he intended to do for the rest of his life. He wrote, “I intend to travel and write”. In these six simple words of a nine-year-old Hemingway, he found his light and was ready for it to shine. From that time he made a point to consciously find a great story in the experiences he gained from travels into adulthood (Paperblanks).
