All Good Things Are Wild and Free “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better,” Albert Einstein once said. Nature is about balance and harmony, which is something that is lacking in today’s society. To deal with the pains of life, it is thought that one should connect with nature, and the inseparable bond that is created will allow people to find themselves again. Spending time alone and connecting with one’s environment can teach valuable life lessons, and by escaping into the wilderness, one will be able to free themselves from the troubles that have weighed them down. In Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, Wild, Cheryl uses diction and rhetoric to communicate her message by using imagery, maxims, and mature diction.
The Speaking the Unspeakable lecture by Laura Gomez was mostly on the topic of immigration, particularly Hispanic immigrants. A point that was brought up in the lecture was the fact that there is discrimination when it comes to the possession of illegal drugs. To put into context, people of color compared to Whites are more likely to be caught with any amount of drugs and arrested for the possession. They are more likely to be caught because they are already targeted by law enforcement due to the color of their skin and law officials tend to be not as lenient with people of color when they do break a law compared to a White individual. This example of discrimination used by Laura Gomez made me think of an example that was present in the reading
Do not be told something is impossible. There is always a way”(Robert Rodriguez). In The Way, by Emilio Estevez, the main character Tom walks the path of Camino de Santiago, a path that his son, Daniel, died on. Some of the last things that Daniel said to his son was, “You don’t choose a life dad….. You live one”(www.imdb.com).
In Towers Falling, Deja finds out that people at school don’t value her less because she is homeless. Ben and Sabeem became friends with Deja, even though a lot of people were probably ignoring Deja because she probably looked lower class than other kids, which could break up both Ben and Sabeem's previous group of friends. In Raymond’s Run, Squeaky discovers that it is better to be nice to people than to think critically about them. For example, when she thought critically about Gretchen, Squeaky didn’t like her, but when she thought positively about Gretchen she became friends with her. These are the reasons a similarity is friendship can change your look at
The topic of my Portfolio will be how Laurie Halse Anderson uses characterization, a certain style(with symbolism and tone) and 1st person point of view, to convey her theme. My thesis will look like: In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the author uses characterization, a certain style(created by symbolism and tone), and an artistic take on 1st person point of view to convey her theme to her readers. I want to include specific examples of how she accomplished this; for instance: she accomplishes her characterization by giving the characters such spot on personalities that a similar real life person would have(your stereotypical teacher, dad, mom, daughter, and student), along with how her characters change over time, and how they do
It can be good to be friends with someone who is different from you. “Chester’s Way’’ by Kevin Henkes is a book that shows that you can be friends with someone who is different from you. Chester and Wilson are two mice who are close friends. They do everything together. At first, when Lilly moves into the neighborhood, she was not accepted by Chester and Wilson because she was different.
In Legally Blond, Elle Woods delivers the student address speech during graduation. Elle Woods addresses that passion is the key ingredient in the study of law and life. The purpose of this speech was to encourage the students to always have passion in everything they do, having faith in others and themselves. The thesis of the speech would be “It is with passion, courage of conviction and strong sense of self, that we take our next steps into the world.” If I was asked to write the speech I honestly would not change anything, Woods did a good job using an attention getter, and creating a thesis.
In Night, Elie Wiesel describes how indifference changed his life. The main idea of this essay would be how Eliezer changed throughout the book. Eliezer at the beginning of the book was a young religious boy then as the book progresses he is hopeless. In the beginning of the book Eliezer can be described as religious.
Hingston wrote the essay with a humorous tone in mind, in our society most people can’t stand the fact that people die. The reason Hingston might have written the essay with a humorous tone is because because she didn’t want to limit her audience to just some people. By adding a bit of humor it opens up the door for all different types of people to read it. Almost at the beginning of the essay the author adds a personal experience so that the audience can relate to
In the essay “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”, Gloria Anazaldúa demonstrates the diversity of the Spanish language. The language is broken into sections, and I agree that when speaking to other Hispanics from different countries it may seem like a completely different language. Being fluent in Spanish, I’ve noticed how this process works. Different accents and words influence the diversity, sometimes making it difficult for two fluent Hispanics to communicate. Countries, such as Argentina, have an accent and a language that differs tremendously from other forms of Spanish.
Speech Sounds 1) Summary A mysterious disease has swept across the nation and deprived many of their abilities of communication; speeches, literacy, as well as the lives of numerous people were lost. Rye, after the death of her family to the disease, was making a trip to Pasadena out of loneliness and desperation in search of her remaining relatives. While riding on the bus Rye encountered Obsidian, a man dressed in police uniform trying to restore peace in a society where miscommunication led to violence and government was obsolete.
How does one deal with challenges thrown at them? By ignoring them and hope things will change for the better? Friendship is something that can either last a long time or for a short amount of time. Everybody has had friendships come and go at times in their life. The two main characters, George and Lennie, have quite the bond. They both have each others back at all times. They have loyalty, love, and share the same dream with each other.
Two people have a great relationship, and they refer to themselves as friends. But what exactly makes them friends? What defines a great friendship and what makes a good friend? Knowing what makes a good friendship helps people focus on the right things and set their mind on other people. Certain attributes combine to create a great friendship; however, one trait is the most important of all.
Chapter 3: 10 Ways to Light Up the Happiness in You Now that you’ve read what happiness is and the factors that contribute to a happier life, let us now talk about some of the ways to light up the happiness in you. These, for me, are not just mere processes or methods but more of forming habits for us to lead a happier life. 1.
