Chapter 1 Things were monotonous in my early life. On the 20th March 1890, I was born to Henry C. Gatz and his wife in rural North Dakota. This was the same place that I spent the first 16 poverty-stricken years of my life. I can’t remember the exact details of my family life, as I have long since forgotten my parents, but I will never be able to forget my lifestyle on that farm. We were a dirt-poor German-American family, and I absolutely despised the limits that poverty placed on my shoulders. It confused me as to why my parents never strived for something more. They were unsuccessful farm people, and it was as if they were actually happy that way. They never complained about not having money, they never cared when all we had to eat was …show more content…
Tom borrowed Gatsby's yellow Rolls-Royce to drive up to the city. On the way to New York City, Tom made a detour at a gas station in the Valley of Ashes, a run-down part of Long Island. The owner, George Wilson, shared his concern that his wife, Myrtle, may be having an affair. This unnerved Tom, who I know had been the one having an affair with Myrtle, and he leaves in a hurry. During the party, in an expensive hotel suite, the casual conversation evolved into a confrontation between Daisy, Gatsby, and Tom. In a fit of anger, Gatsby insisted that Daisy loved him, not Tom, and that she only married Tom for his money. Daisy ended up admitting that she loved both Tom and Gatsby. The party then broke up, with Daisy driving Gatsby out of New York City in the yellow Rolls Royce and Tom, Jordan, and I leaving in Tom's car. From her upstairs room at the gas station, Myrtle saw an approaching car. Mistakenly believing Tom had returned for her, she ran out towards the car, but was struck and killed instantly. Panicked, Daisy drove away from the scene of the accident. When the rest of us arrived at the crime scene, Tom told George that it was Gatsby's car that killed
The crowded bar was noisy, smoky and in no way what Tom had in mind when he had suggested to Booker that they were in a slump and needed to set time aside for a weekly date night. When he had made the proposal, he had expected quiet nights in listening to music or dinners at fancy restaurants, but so far, they had experienced the unsavory environment of a pool hall and a night out at a Monster Truck exhibition. To say he was unimpressed would have been an understatement; his lover’s apparent lack of thoughtful and suitable suggestions for the perfect date had him feeling downright pissed off. It appeared Booker was not only adept at getting his own way; he also did not have a single romantic bone in his body.
Thematic Thinker – Day 3 Theme A theme present in these two chapters is “Living far away from a loved one can distance your relationship.” Ming and Fitzgerald were very close and met each other often but ever since Ming moved their relationship isn’t what it used to be. They are no longer able to meet each other and they are only able to talk on the phone which isn’t enough to keep their relationship going. Three Passages “Both she and Fitzgerald were there on Mondays and Tuesdays, but on Wednesdays neither of them went to the hospital.
One event that is surprising to me personally in the book was when arthur gave nate his 1st place prize which was a skateboard that nate really wanted. Why this is surprising to me is because nate hated him because he entered in his troop and stole his 1st place spot and took his spot in his troop with his friends teddy and francis which they let him in the troop and nate did not agree to the decision of letting him in [Arthur] On pg.43 and on pg.85 it states, teddy says this is nate's best friend¨He really wants to win that skateboard¨. Then nate says ¨no that's my skateboard not his¨.On page 85 it also states , Nate sad this¨Arthur made me some brownies that's so obnoxious and on page 73 nate says¨how much I hate arthur he's so irritating
a) In chapter IV, section IV, the author compared the words of someone who speak knowingly about buying or selling stocks to that of an oracle. Because of the overwhelmingly positive outlook of the market, brokers and investment counselors were aware of the possibilities, and people were eager to profit from a growing market, these men’s advices were treated with importance as their words “became golden”. The author uses religious metaphors to compare the confidence of the American people have for these stock buying advices to the that of a believer to an oracle; a sense of confidence that lacks sufficient justification or evidence. b) In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was set in the 1920s, people lived in a state
What do I know already? I know that Myrtle has been killed by Daisy. Daisy ran her over with Gatsby’s car.
The passages I chose in this Novel is what I deem to be important to the climax of this Novel. From the passages that I chose it would seem that since the group decided to travel to Spain that's when things began to happen. Before Spain, when they were staying in Paris, they would all go out as a group of friends, drinking, partying, dancing, and just having a good time together. But now that they're in Spain it seems like things are starting to heat up and i’m not just talking about the weather.
• The succeeding report made me contemplate on "You" being a dime novel. " You are additional that your very existence is dim and undecided and you murmur your first word to me -- hello --when most individuals would just permit by but not you."
This happens because in a panic Daisy and Jay drive back from the city and run down a woman who ends up dead. When her husband questions the culprit, Tom volunteers information about the seen car that killed her. He alerts the poor man that Jay Gatsby is responsible for his wife’s death. The ending represents the flaws in the characters. Gatsby, forever chasing the past, obviously hindered.
1. “I am still a little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my father said snobbishly, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parceled out unequally at birth.’ Ch.1 Analysis: nick is tying to say that Money isn’t always what people are born into; especially in this time people who are born into money are considered the upper class and above all. Some people are just a better person in general even without being born into a rich family he doesn’t know if a person has to be born into wealth to have natural class or just be classy on their own.
Gatsby could not ignore that fact Daisy not only is a married woman. Daisy also has her own child with Tom making the act of leaving Tom more impossible. Greed also parallels to the idea of corruption leading to the fall of Gatsby. When finally reaching the goal a new probability, one that he claims all of Daisy for himself is reflected in the green light that can deter the too optimist Gatsby. After living the dream, it starts coming apart with Myrtle's death and imminent danger foreshadowed by Nick.
Myrtle is accustomed to living an underprivileged life where feminine power engulfs her, but Tom is too egotistical to allow Myrtle to speak with such authority to him. Similarly, Gatsby’s need for assurance from Daisy pressures her into revealing to Tom that she never loved him (Fitzgerald 132). Deep down, Daisy knows that she truly did love Tom once, but Gatsby’s assertiveness and persistence drives her over the edge to telling Tom that what the two of them shared meant nothing to her. Daisy’s attribute of being a pushover is revealed immensely because she refuses to stand up for herself. Daisy is used to enabling Tom to constantly control all aspects of her life, and that leaves her powerless in society.
The actions Tom takes near the end of the story show how hypocritical Tom really is. For some reason, Tom is irritated that Gatsby and Daisy seem to have feelings for each other, but his affair with Myrtle is completely fine with him. To Tom, there is nothing wrong with him cheating on Daisy, but Daisy wanting to be with Gatsby is a horrid thing, even
Chapter 7: 20. There are similar circumstances revealed between both Tom and Wilson such as: they are both overprotective of their wives. In the novel, Daisy is fooling around with Gatsby and Myrtle is fooling around with Tom. Tom and George both love their wives no matter what is going on but they don't like that they are associating themselves with other men in such a way. 21.
I, Bolin Yu, was born February of 1928 in Huangpu, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The village that I lived in was pretty isolated, but not far away from danger. My mother and I get our food from raising crops and ponds where we raised fish, a pretty fair way of living and not going hungry. The house we lived in had no electricity, so life was pretty desolate then, it was made of brick and our floor was made out of dirt, we had outhouses as bathrooms. I remember my village having had gun towers that were positioned throughout the village, that really had no use because we barely have any firearms, to protect ourselves from robber bandits but nonetheless we scared most of them off.
