affects the brain in several different ways. Cocaine increases levels of
dopamine in the brain, preventing it from being recycled naturally. This
also causes dopamine to be built up in the synapse, disrupting brain
communication. With long term use, the brain’s reward system is
damaged along with other brain functions which can lead to addiction,
depression, tiredness, empathy, and minor hallucinations.
As of today, no FDA- approved treatments are readily available for
cocaine. There are; however, some treatments such as vigabatrin,
modafinil, tiagabine, disulfiram, and topiramate that help improve the

way of treating cocaine addicts.

Around the 1880’s, however, cocaine was celebrated in the United States for its “magical, medicinal purposes” (New Ulm Weekly Review). The miracle medicine of the late 19th century, cocaine, is derived from the coca plant native to South America, more specifically, the Andes Mountains. South Americans chewed the coca leaves for thousands of years to counter the nauseating effects of living in thin mountain-air environments and to stimulate their heart and breathing rates for hunting purposes.
With cocaine, it is extremely expensive, around $70 per gram. Only celebrities and wealthy people could use cocaine, because of its exorbitant price. However, with the creation of crack cocaine, the price was able to go down a little bit, so it became more accessible for drug gangs and

The effects of can be manifested immediately. The small dosages of cocaine make the person feel energetic, euphoric, mentally alert, and hypersensitive to touch, sight and sound. Momentarily, the drug can decrease the need for sleep and food (WebMed, 2017). The extent of the drug euphoric impacts relies on the administration routes. 1. Cocaine became popular when it started being used for more and more things as its uses became more and more known. Cocaine use originated around 5000 BECAUSE with the Incans of Peru. Cocaine was used as a stimulant to help the natives get through grueling, long, active days of work. As time went on the plant became an integral part of their lives; used as money, an herb and during religious ceremonies.
Many did not even suspect this drug to be harmful in any way. If anything, it was a recreational drug, meaning it was done for enjoyment and pleasure. Many of the users claimed that it was non- addictive but that is not true. The National Survey on Drug Abuse, in 1982, researched that 22 million Americans used cocaine at least once (Discovering U.S. History, 1997).
Cocaine should stay as an illegal drug because of the effect that causes people who consume it react the way they do. Cocaine is a drug in a powder or crystal form. Powder requires corn, starch, talcum powder and/or sugar or other drugs like procaine or amphetamines. Cocaine is used by either inhaling it through the nose (snorted), and then it is absorbed through the nasal tissue, or dissolved in water and injected into the bloodstream. When people inject or smoke cocaine, it takes the drug right into the bloodstream and brain.

“No one paid any attention, as everyone was busy going through their own withdrawal stages in different ways”(Beah 169). Ishamael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone, shares his experience as a boy soldier using cocaine in the Sierra Leone War. As young soldiers, the boys were introduced to many different drugs and stimulants which quickly turned into their heavy dependence on them to be strong soldiers. Drugs are substances that trigger temporary changes in the body which may result in such a pleasurable and relaxing effect. Some of the types can slow down the nervous system’s action, while other types can have the exact opposite effect; spurring the nervous system into rapid action. Drugs are connected to cravings or addiction since a person’s body starts yearning for drugs after he or she has taken it for a while. Drugs affect consciousness significantly! They may cause people to hear or see things that aren’t real (hallucinations), experiencing mood swings, or may even distort people’s perceptions.
