In Alice Walker’s novel, The Color Purple, one of the major themes in the book is that you shouldn’t let violence control you, instead you should prevent it. A few examples of the theme in the novel is on page 37 where Albert states “ Well how you spect to make her mind? Wives is like children. You have to let ‘em know who got the upper hand. Nothing can do that better then a good sound beating”. What this quote states is that Albert is encouraging his son Harpo to beat his wife to obey him, In page 6 Cecil states “ he beat me cause he say I winked at a boy in chruch”. What this quote means is that Cecil got a beating from her step dad for what he assumed what she was doing at chruch. In page 78 Shug states “He beat me when you not here, I …show more content…
She ast. For being me and not you”. What this quote means is that Cecil endures violence from her husband mainly because she is not her other husband’s lover, Shug. In Page 131 Netties states “he [albert] followed me on his horse…… I tried to ignore him…...After a while I had to rest, that’s when he got down from his horse and started to kiss me, and drag me back in the woods”. What this quote means is that Albert tried to sexually assault Cecil’s sister, Nettie and he tried to do so by using physical violence. All these quotes are examples of violence the characters endure physical violence, some choose to deal with it for a great amount of time and others choose to fight back. But in the end, the characters that endured physical violence choose to take the upper hand and prevent the violence they have endured. In page 242, Netties states “ No, I said, it isn’t resentment, exactly. It really is indifference. Sometimes I feel our position is like that of flies on an elephant’s hide”. What this quote means is that Nettie believes is that it isn't right for girls to be treated differently. In page 131 “Well I started to fight him, and with God’s help I hurt him bad enough to let me alone, But he was sum
The most important phrase here is “happiness” or else the quote is just a meaningless empty quote. After reading the novel (more than once if I might add) I believe that the quote is trying to say, you should never look
The action portrays the idea that the victim is complying to the abuser to avoid excessive punishments in a sense of fear. Fear has stemmed from the dark black ring that perfectly fits the eye of the innocent, unfair abuse. The darkened silence developed as a result of the fear possessed by the
She became mean a heart cold as stone. She stopped teaching him. When he had a newspaper or book she would take it away with ferocity. Fredrick Douglass was put under lots of pressure but still continued to learn and read. His mistress had given him a nibble but he took a bite.
The presentation of the information Hamill uses brings clarity to the situation for readers who don’t know all of the truths that lie behind domestic violence. Facts are used moderately and appropriately throughout his piece to shed light on these truths. Domestic violence “kills more cops than dope-dealers and bank robbers combined,” (Hamill 467), and “our indifference permits… the death of 2500 women per year at the hands of their ‘lovers,’ one every three-and-a-half hours, and just as we permit a woman to be battered senseless every eighteen seconds of every day in this country” (Hamill 469). Most readers do not know this information. Facts quickly draw attention, and further establish the author’s credibility – because he knows the details of the subject of his writing, he is able to strengthen the overall effectiveness of the piece.
Some are naturally violent, but this attitude also comes from people feeling like they need to prove something because they are insecure about themselves. Many people who are insecure look for a chance to prove how great they are by attacking others. In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, the character Curley is always picking on others just because he wants to make other people respect him. Curley’s dominant traits are his constant desire for violence as well as his lack of connection to anyone--even his own wife. Steinbeck uses Curley to reveal his theme that without companionship, a person’s life is empty and often directed toward
He’s also saying how slavery not only affects slaves, but slave holders as well. In the novel Douglass uses imagery to convey his experiences in slavery. In the text Douglass writes, “Never having enjoyed to any considerable extent, her soothing presence, her tender and watchful care” (pg. 43). Douglass is explaining how he did not get the chance to experience the natural and/or normal relationship children have with their mothers when he was a child.
At the age of ten, Edward Isham threw the first punch that led down the long road of a violent lifestyle (Bolton, 1). He grew up without a mother and with an alcoholic and a womanizer role model of a father (Bolton, 102). Unlike most, Isham was uneducated and not involved in the church after being kicked out of both (Bolton, 2). His far from average and tumultuous childhood mirrored his far from average life (Bolton, 101). Edward Isham’s life was not one of a typical poor white man because of his work circumstances, his relationships, and his extremely violent lifestyle.
This was all shred to pieces with slavery. Douglass juxtaposes Mistress’ “lamb-like disposition” to “tiger-like fierceness” (¶ 2). This is a very power juxtaposition because it displays the cruelty and evil that lies within slavery, and what effect it has on even the kindest of souls. This also alludes to the Christian Bible, in the way that slavery is allowed by the Bible, and this clash between Mistress’ Christian values, and this idea of slavery, that ultimately results in the victory of slavery. The beginning of paragraph two begins by praising Mistress for “treat[ing] me as she supposed one human treat another” (¶ 2), and then speaks of the same Mistress, who “became even more violent in her opposition than her husband himself” (¶ 2).
One example of power difference within a relationship is when Sykes gets home to see Delia doing the laundry, “Don't gimme no lip neither, else Ah’ll throw ‘em out and put mah fist up side yo’ head to boot” (1). This quote shows how women, like Delia, were expected to do all of the housework and were expected to obey their husbands. Even with Sykes being abusive, Delia never genuinley stood up for herself within the 15 years of being married to him because men had the power in relationships and this type of behavior was normalized. After Sykes stormed out and Delia layed awake in bed she remembered, “Two months after the wedding, he had given her the first brutal beating” (2). This is important insight into their relationship because it proves to the reader that Sykes has been abusive for 15 years and Delia is still with him.
In To Kill A Mockingbird, a theme that develops throughout the whole book is that people are not always who they seem to be. People are not always who they seem to be because they hide their true selves, there are rumors about them, and people are racist. In the book, people are racist, so they don’t see people for who they really are. An example of this is Tom Robinson.
No mind” (166). He is explaining that Florens allows her savagery control her mind and heart. Florens does not understand this though because she is still young and naïve. The blacksmith makes her leave, so Florens loses the only affection she has ever had in her life. She becomes stronger though because she moves on from her past.
What would you do if you had a gun pointed at your head by your spouse several times? Or beaten twice a week? Leslie Morgan Steiner, has been though domestic abuse and creates a speech to answer a question most people ask, “Why does she stay?” (Steiner). In the speech logos, pathos and ethos are used to make her point proven on how domestic abuse is an important issue and why it need to be spoken about.

One of the motifs that are seen throughout the whole book is sexual violence, Sexual violence in the book is not something that is very vulgar and violent, but very harsh and unacceptable. But Is forced intercourse justified because they are trying to populate? Should that be considered decent and nonviolent. As I have said before Offred tells the reader about her sexual experiences with Luke, nick, and the commander. She uses harsh detail and words to describe her feelings toward the situation.
To Kill a Mockingbird The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee is set to place in the 1930’s, right in the middle of the Great Depression. During the time period, there was great prejudice, which is shown greatly in the courtroom with Tom Robinson. A scene in the movie shows Calpurnia sitting in the backseat of a car while Atticus is driving and the passenger seat is available for her to sit.
