There was once a woman who traveled great distances in the name of freedom, never did she let fear or danger intervene on her quest. Years later, there was a boy, who sacrificed his childhood freedom in the name of love. These individuals paths have never crossed, but they each carry one unifying trait. The trait of bravery. Harriet Tubman in "Harriet Tubman: Guid to Freedom" and Salvador in "Salvador, late or early" both highlight an overall theme of in hard times, bravery is essential. Harriet Tubman’s actions in Harriet Tubman: Guide to Freedom is a fantastic example of how In hard times, bravery is essential. They offered rewards for his capture.” The “him” they speak of is none other than Harriet Tubman. This quote basically states that people watched out for Harriet specifically and she had a bounty on her head. If you had a bounty on your head, would you still keep putting yourself out in the open in the line of danger? That’s exactly what Harriet did, she continued to free slaves even though money was offered to any one who could capture her. That requires a great amount of bravery to continue doing illegal business when you are a wanted woman. Another prime example would be when Harriet aimed a gun at a slave who wanted to return to his plantation because he couldn't handle being on the run any longer. Harriet risked loosing the trust of the slaves she traveled with just to keep one man with them. She also risked the slaves turning against her later on in their journey, but she did what she knew she had to do even though some times doing what should be done is the most terrifying. Also, When the author states, “She gave the impression of being a short, muscular, indomitable woman who could never …show more content…
If you look at the story you will be able to recognize several instances of this theme. However, there are many misconceptions of the definition on the word bravery. Many believe that to be brave you must be a hero who risks their life to save the world. However, bravery in its true form has a much broader definition. It can be going on a roller coaster that terrifies you, or facing your fear of public speaking. It can every be as simple as trudging through life even when your future looks bleak, still pushing on and working hard, not for yourself, but someone you love. Salvador is a prime example of this form of bravery. One example is the quote, "The throat that must clear itself and apologized each time it speaks." Salvador does not believe he is entitled to an opinion. He goes throughout life feeling helpless, that's incredibly brave. Another example is Salvador's physical appearance. Salvador is 40 pounds and covered in scars. Salvador is most likely undernourished and has been bullied or suffered domestic abuse. Yet, he still continues to trudge on. Also, Salvador cares for his brothers, he is just a child, but he has so much responsibility on his small shoulders. He sacrifices his time to be a child to care for others. Yet another example is the fact that Salvador has no friends and his teachers don't know his name. He goes through life with no
It struck Harriet in the forehead, leaving a great open gash there” (Petry 63). Harriet sacrificed her life knowing that she would be punished for her actions of protecting another one of the slaves. In her time as a conductor of the Underground Railroad Tubman rescued over 300 people from the plantations in the South. And as she said proudly to Fredrick Douglas “never lost a single passenger.” As well in her 19 trips to the south Tubman brought back more than 15 people on all of her trips, she had to keep them all quiet and teach them how to not make noise, so that they would stay in concealment.
Essential to overcoming adversity is the ability to cause change in yourself and others. In the book, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen, has to learn to be strong and brave in a crisis. This helps her to survive the Hunger Games, because it gives her more faith especially when the price of losing her family is on the line. Ultimately, Collins shows that Bravery and strength leads to a successful person and can help one survive in something life changing.
Harriet Tubman was a woman who changed the course of history by fighting against slavery throughout her entire life. Most modern-day individuals know her for conducting the Underground Railroad and helping hundreds of enslaved people escape from their captors. She went on several perilous journeys to southern plantations despite the heavy reward sum that plantation owners eventually placed on her head. Her courage and readiness to risk her own capture allowed many to live better lives in the North. However, conducting the Underground Railroad was not the only way she contributed to the abolition of slavery.
“Mah people mus’ go free,” her constant refrain, suggests a determination uncommon among even the most militant slaves. Harriet Tubman was a very important person in the history of slavery. She played a major role in helping free slaves. Harriet Tubman has made a difference in many slaves’ lives. She was a helpful and caring person.
Instead of staying safe, she left to rescue family and non-family. This was a huge risk because the reward for her was a HUGE amount. She didn’t let that bother her as it did with her brothers. She believed that every slave should be free and equal so she made many more trips to rescue people. But then the law made it slightly more difficult for Harriet.
What was Harriet Tubman’s Greatest Achievement? Did you know that escaped slaves would travel over 300 miles just to go from the south to Canada? Harriet Tubman was lots of different things she was a spy, she was a nurse and caretaker. But I believe her biggest achievement was the underground railroad which help slaves travel to Canada from the South.
In the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor, characters go around helping those in need. Every time someone shows courage they throw themselves into harm's way. Courage can save lives. Paul shows courage by helping at the sinkhole. One example is when Paul got everyone’s attention by saying, “I didn’t even think about it.
None the less. Ben had few options but to continue working as a timber estimator and foreman for his former owner. Although similar manumission stipulation applied to rit and her children. The family chose not to free them despite his free slaves, Ben had the power to challenge their decision. Harriet Tubman decided to escape following about of illness and the death of her owner in 1849.
The American Revolution was said to have been almost lost on multiple occasions, however, because of the American’s courage, strength and perseverance they were able to defeat the British and earn their independence. Winning a war isn’t an easy task especially against the greatest army in the world at the time, but because of the unity of the American people or the colonists at the time, because of their courage, strength and perseverance they benefited from it and because of these factors they were able to win the war and claim what they so strongly believed they had the right to. Courageous people have been displayed throughout all of history, and especially in fictional tales and stories told by people. However, this is no tale,
If Harriet was never brave enough to do what she has done, She would not have saved 300 slaves and the Underground Railroad would not have been what it was today. Harriet did the right thing and saved all the slaves that she could have saved in her lifetime. All in all, slavery is the wrong thing to do and no person should have the right to own
This quote shows bravery because he's saying he will fight and win with his courage/bravery or he will die because it was not his fate to win. Today in modern society showing bravery is something that can be so little but mean so much to someone else. It could also mean something so big that impacts not only yourself but people around you also. Everyday a human will show an act of bravery and become brave like
John F. Kennedy, American politician and former 35th President of the United States once stated “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” JFK is absolutely correct in saying this because although effort and courage are important in various situations throughout life, they are meaningless without a purpose backing them up. Some of the most prominent examples of how we use courage and effort for a purpose is when we defend our certain beliefs and virtues. People around the world are using courage, whether it is a simple statement or an unexpected action to stand up for their true beliefs. Literature, movies, and the media also praise taking a stand against the enemy using the protagonist as an example.
Courage has gone through many changes. It has been altered throughout races, cultures, religions, sex, and time. However, the core values of courage has always remained parallel. It is difficult to explain in words the meaning of courage, like describing a color, but everyone knows what courage is, how it feels, and how to perform it. In Harper Lee’s
Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross in Dorchester, Maryland in 1820, and she died March 10, 1913 in Auburn, New York (“Harriet Tubman” PBS). Tubman’s first exposure to slavery was when two of her sisters were sent to plantations. In her younger years she was a slave in a few owners homes where she was beaten and abused (“Harriet Tubman” Leaders). Later in Tubman’s life, she met her husband John Tubman, who inspired her to free other slaves (Hillstrom and Hillstrom 473-479). Harriet Tubman is a significant person because she helped to free people from slavery, encouraged others through her leadership, and became a symbol of perseverance to slaves.
The ability to show courage and integrity enables a person to face their difficulties and defend what they believe in without fear of repercussions. A courageous, strong willed person will stand up to others to express what they think is right and wrong in spite of the possibility of criticism from others. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee is able to show this determination and strong fortitude through Atticus’s character. Atticus is shown to display the characteristics of a courageous person through action in the novel, mostly through the defending of a Tom Robinson, a black person, and the chain reaction of events that happen before and after his trial. It is also shown by Atticus in smaller acts largely towards his children,
