There was once a woman who traveled great distances in the name of freedom, never did she let fear or danger intervene on her quest. Years later, there was a boy, who sacrificed his childhood freedom in the name of love. These individuals paths have never crossed, but they each carry one unifying trait. The trait of bravery. This quote basically states that people watched out for Harriet specifically and she had a bounty on her head. If you had a bounty on your head, would you still keep putting yourself out in the open in the line of danger? That’s exactly what Harriet did, she continued to free slaves even though money was offered to any one who could capture her. That requires a great amount of bravery to continue doing illegal business when you are a wanted woman. Another prime example would be when Harriet aimed a gun at a slave who wanted to return to his plantation because he couldn't handle being on the run any longer. Harriet risked loosing the trust of the slaves she traveled with just to keep one man with them. She also risked the slaves turning against her later on in their journey, but she did what she knew she had to do even though some times doing what should be done is the most terrifying. If you look at the story you will be able to recognize several instances of this theme. However, there are many misconceptions of the definition on the word bravery. Many believe that to be brave you must be a hero who risks their life to save the world. However, bravery in its true form has a much broader definition. It can be going on a roller coaster that terrifies you, or facing your fear of public speaking. It can every be as simple as trudging through life even when your future looks bleak, still pushing on and working hard, not for yourself, but someone you love. Salvador is a prime example of this form of bravery. One example is the quote, "The throat that must clear itself and apologized each time it speaks." Salvador does not believe he is entitled to an opinion. He goes throughout life feeling helpless, that's incredibly brave. Another example is Salvador's physical appearance. Salvador is 40 pounds and covered in scars. Salvador is most likely undernourished and has been bullied or suffered domestic abuse. Yet, he still continues to trudge on. Also, Salvador cares for his brothers, he is just a child, but he has so much responsibility on his small shoulders. He sacrifices his time to be a child to care for others.
