An occurrence at owl creek bridge & The lottery The story “An occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” tells the story of a plantation owner in Alabama during the American Civil War. He was executed at the hands of Union soldiers. On the other hand, The Lottery takes place in a small town with a macabre lottery tradition. The two short stories both share more than a handful of similar conflict throughout the stories. “An occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce. The story is based on Peyton Farquhar, a plantation owner being prepared for execution by hanging from an Alabama bridge during the american civil war. Farquhar is a confederate supporter that learns that the union troops have taken over the owl creek railroad bridge. A union soldier in disguise told Farquhar to burn down the bridge, he of course falls for this for the soldiers trick because he doesn’t believe the war is fair. He was caught by the union guards and sent to be executed immediately. In the midst of being hung Farquhar frees his hands, pulls the noose away, and begins his journey to his family. Only telling the readers the dialogue, actions, and the settings of the characters in the small american town. Making it seem normal until they reveal what actually happens in the long standing gruesome tradition of the lottery. While in “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is also in 3rd person point of view; the readers are only limited to the characters thoughts. Which in the ending is accomplished when it is revealed the man being hung (Farquhar) thoughts are cut short. The two stories share the same point of view and both were told by a narrator.
