Fresh new high school seniors are ready to embark on the journey of choosing of a college to attend. These students are filled with fear of choosing the right one or else their lives "will be ruined forever". However, students can be rest assured knowing that universities would never lie to them and that they only want what 's best for them, right? Sometimes that may not be the case. Universities are known as a place of academics but what happens when all of that changes?
Dr. Jane Vella devoted her life to creating and developing the Dialogue Education ™ approach to adult education. Dr. Vella received her understanding on the adult learning principles from her more than 50 years experience as an educator in many countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. She also used the principle of Dialogue Education in her doctoral research at the University of Massachusetts and wrote several popular books on this subject. She founded Global Learning Partners (GLP) to develop a network of practitioners of Dialogue Education approach (Core Group 2012). The Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach book is written about principles and practical steps of Dialogue Education approach.
Research shows, for example, that GED recipients perform about as well as high school graduates on standardized tests but have much worse life outcomes because they often lack important qualities such as curiosity, conscientiousness, perseverance, and sociability. ELA teachers could help more students develop these so-called “soft skills” or non-cognitive abilities if they didn’t have to focus on drills for tests. Instead, ELA teachers have to, for instance, cut back on large-scale projects that require perseverance, reduce the number of literary texts that engender the empathy necessary to sociability, and limit opportunities for developing student curiosity. Student learning that could lead in positive directions is diminished when tests prevent teachers from helping students develop the noncognitive abilities that support better life outcomes.
Another technique I learned is to create good classroom procedures and rules. Having good procedures and rules will allow the students to know what I expect in the classroom and the class will run fluently. I also learned about motivation in students. We discussed certain strategies that we can use as an educator to increase motivation in the classroom. Some strategies that I will use in my classroom are; to use rewards sparingly, make my students feel welcomed, be positive, use praise orally, promote mastery learning, and use clear and constructive
My teaching philosophy continues to evolve depending upon the audience. For example, as a law enforcement professional trainer, training recruits in new techniques, concepts, physical skills, it was important for the recruit learner to memorize the techniques, learn appropriate terms, develop understanding of daily operational equipment of law enforcement and to understand how to apply rules, statutes, and ordinances in applicable circumstances. Consequently, this involves behaviorism influence of reinforcement, memorization, and repetition to ensure techniques are completed correctly (Manery, 2014). The skills and values that liberally educated people should posses can vary from different views, yet the list of ten qualities that William Cronon created in his article, “’Only Connect…’ The Goals of a Liberal Education”(1998), is an inspirational goal for the liberally educated. Cronon’s list of qualities includes solving problems and puzzles, empowering others, and understanding how to get stuff done in the world.

Though testing is necessary with the current structure of evaluating students, there is a conscience effort to improve schooling for students. Educational philosophy and teaching styles are two aspects of adult learning that influence the teaching-learning transaction in colleges and universities. The educational philosophy can inform the educator with strategies and methods for implementing adult learning principles. Floyd (2010) described the importance of educators knowing their educational philosophy because self-examination and critical inspection of practices will create a consciousness of some unconscious beliefs that affect teaching practice.(1,2) The literature on educational philosophy explains, “When an adult educator engages in the practice of education, certain beliefs about life in general are applied to the practice” . Therefore, educators hold beliefs about how adults learn, how they should be taught, and what instructional practice should look like.
Final Reflective Paper The decision to return to school is a significant step for adult learners, particularly after a long absence from formal learning, and there are many factors in making that decision. Perhaps to develop or achieve professional goals, higher career status, professional security, or to personal goals, such as, seeking knowledge and new skills. As adult learners, they bring lived experiences and develop knowledge to the classroom, most are self-directed, goal oriented, therefore, have different ways in approaching learning and may require particular learning environments.
