Bullying occurs every day due to social pressures, cultural insensitivity, and learned behaviors during formative years, and therefore is a pervasive issue that affects both the bully and the bullied, causing self-esteem issues, mental health problems, delay of social skills, and should be addressed and prevented by parents. Bully is a very widespread problem and affect many individuals, especially students. One out of every five students report being bullied (Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center, 2016). Children need to learn to seek help as soon as possible to help stop the harassment and prevent for future harassment. Also, it can help prevent bullying towards other victims. Victims need to not walk alone, try to implant respect and even fear in the bully. Another way a victim can help themselves towards being bullied is not showing signs that they are upset (Boose, 2016). A victim can also look into seeking counseling to help have someone to vent about their feelings and experiences that affect them. Counselors have tools to help cope and deal with mental damage due to bullying whether a victim have been dealing with harassment for a short term or long term. Victims can get into healthy activities, clubs or other hobbies to stay positive and stay occupied for a busy lifestyle. In doing so it can help them gain or maintain self-esteem. Getting involved in activities or hobbies outside of school can help with a victim to experience out of sight out of mind. Bullies and those bullied are at highest risk of suicide (CDC , 2016). While parents and guardians need to communicate with their children or teens, the awareness of suicide needs to be talked about but in the correct way because sending the wrong message can result in negative life threatening results. Having the right communication can help a child or teen come forward if they are having thoughts of hurting themselves and even others whether it’s the bully, family or peers. Child and teens need to be educated and know that suicide is a permeant decision and is not the answer to solving the problem with the bully. “The issue came to a head in April when 11-year-old Jaheem Herrera committed suicide at his Atlanta-area home after his parents say he was tormented repeatedly in school. Officials denied it, and an independent review found bullying wasn’t a factor, a conclusion his family rejects.” (The Washington Times) This is why we need to enforce and be more strict on bullying rules. Now the not as much of common method of ending bullying would be to punish the bullies. There are some schools that have implemented some very strong strategies of which the individuals who are found victimizing another individual may be suspended from school or even mentioned to the local law enforcement. This sort of tactic is used to emphasize the significance of this kind of matter and to make individuals feel safe from bullying and/or bullies. Bullying is something most people go through, more than one out of five kids are reported to being bullied. In 2003 only 7.1% of children were being bullied then the number jumped to 31.7% in 2007. In middle school, which ranges from ages 11-13, bullying is a common practice among the students. It is impossible to limit bullying to one race, age group, sex, or sexual orientation for that matter because it can happen to anyone (M. Beltre-Domingos, personal communication, January 27, 2016). However, Wang, Iannotti, Nansel (2009) state that, “Studies on direct and indirect bullying have consistently shown that boys are more involved in direct bullying, whereas girls are more involved in indirect bullying” (p. 268). In some ways it is difficult to control bullying, especially when students fail to report it out of fear of retaliation. To some degree, the bully has to be seen as a victim as well because such deplorable behavior does not come out of thin air.

When researching I was shocked to see that the bully is just as affected by the situation as the person being bullying, the are in fact even more likely to develop problems in the future. The problems these individuals can develop are very serious and can often lead to suicide. Victims of bullying are much more likely to commit suicide than someone who has not been bullied. I was shocked by the statistics that were found about this problem as well. I was shocked to see that over 70% of teachers see bullying at least once a year, that is a crazy percentage, it shows that especially in schools this is a serious problem.

Bullying can come in many different forms, it can be verbal, physical, social or psychological aggressive behaviour by an individual or group of people directed towards a less powerful person or group that is intended to cause distress, fear or even harm (). A study by Lancet psychiatry states that, “Teens being bullied by peers have suffered worse long-term effects.” These researchers have studied that adolescents are more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, and consider self-harm or even suicide over the course of being bullied or later in life.” Furthermore, adolescents tend to other things to help with their depression and anxiety, whether it be drugs, or even becoming a bully themselves. Above all, bullying can cause effects on people, not just mentally but physically. 20% of teens have turned to alcohol or drugs to help with their depression, this is called self medication.
