The year of 1978 became a historic moment in time for Faye Wattleton and this country. At the age of 34, she became not only the first African American woman, but also the youngest person to preside over the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She used her position to further progress and advocate for the organization. One of the greatest powers she had that other leaders of the organization before her did not was the ability to bridge the gap with minorities. The health of African Americans has not always been, and still is not a top priority in this country, but she was able to get some our voices heard. As she once quoted, "The future and strength of the [black] race is for women to be able to have kids when they want them and to love …show more content…
As previously mentioned, she grew up in a Christian background, so there certainly were disagreements conserning topics such as abortion with Christian and other religious faiths. In addition to pushback from religious groups, she and Planned Parenthood also had to deal with political parties and organizations that pushed back against some of her advocacies. Lastly of course, were pro-life and anti-abortionist organizations that went against her missions all around the nation. Wattleton and Planned Parenthood received countless threats, some verbal and some physical that were of serious concern. However, it takes a strong leader to fight for what is right when there are so many adversaries going against you. Wattleton was just that. She was steadfast with her mission and never stopped pushing for what she believed …show more content…
Faye Wattleton, who resigned from her position in 1992, cannot be thanked enough for her services and the progressive direction that she took the organization too. By the end of her 14 years serving as the president, the organization encompassed 170 affiliates and 860 clinics in 49 states. She also tripled the organizations budget from $104.3 million in 1977 to $303 million in 1988, generating more funds to provide more care. It is no question that she took Planned Parenthood to new heights and affected thousands of lives along the way. She has set a tremendous example to thousands of nurses around the country. Her work has shown that by starting off with a nursing degree and a passion, there is so much that a nurse can do to improve healthcare for women Nurses have an opportunity to work for organizations like Planned Parenthood and continue to advocate for women’s reproductive rights and care. Nurse practitioners, in particular, can perform roles such as educating women and young girls, inserting IUDs, and prescribing oral contraceptives to women. One of the greatest advantages of this aspect of the nurse practitioner role is that such services are much more affordable to those seeking care, as opposed to visiting a physician for these matters. This concludes that the work of Faye Wattleton and Planned Parenthood have made reproductive healthcare more accessible
During this long period of time she was very determined to get things done and she would have influenced more people to make a change and want to help everyone in the
She found that she already knew that one in four black women over fifty-five have diabetes as well as that four in five black women are overweight. She also knew that obesity could possible overtake smoking as the number one cause of preventable cancer death. She was waking up to the reality that obesity is a serious health concern. With this knowledge she realized that taking care of others and paying no mind to herself “ was not a lifestyle; it was a death style”.(Isaacs and Keohane 208). Due to this conclusion
To change this, she founded the American Birth Control League in 1921, and just two years later her Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau opened. It was at this clinic that an all-female staff worked, as well as all-female
I am a social work student at Frostburg State University and I have completed a policy analysis on the defunding of Planned Parenthood. I oppose defunding of Planned Parent because I believe it serves a good purpose in communities. Defunding of Planned Parenthood would remove all federal funding and allow states to take away state funding from them. Without the 500 million dollar yearly funding that Planned Parenthood receives they will have to shut down a numerous amount of their clinics and many of the nine million clients will not have anywhere to go to for preventive and family planning services. In 2012, Texas stopped funding Planned Parenthood with state aid.
Why Planned Parenthood Should not be Defunded by the Government “Trying to block women from getting access to contraception or defunding Planned Parenthood is completely nonsensical from a policy standpoint.” - Richard Carmona, american physician and nurse. This is exactly why Planned Parenthood should not be defunded. It offers many things from contraception, abortion, cancer screenings and preventions along with much more. Also, if they were to be defunded and abortions could no longer go on, many more unplanned pregnancies would happen and the cost of welfare would escalate a lot.
Planned Parent Hood Funding Planned Parent Hood is funded by multiple different ways, by donations, money that they profit off from there services and federal tax dollars. There has always been an argument between are politicians rather there should be a cut in government funding towards Planned Parenthood and many Americans would argue the fact that rather their tax payer money should or shouldn’t fund Planned Parent, personally I think it should be founded by federal tax dollars. But, what really is Planned Parenthood, and what are American tax payers’ money paying for?
Despite the beneficial projects Planned Parenthood has participated in, riots have broken out against the facility. According to The Daily Signal, “Students for Life of America organized ‘Women Betrayed’ rallies nationwide to protest taxpayer funding for the nation’s largest abortion provider” (Scanlon). The protests could eventually lead to a decrease in funding for Planned Parenthood. The riots do not only affect the business, they also affect the patients. On June 28, 2014, a six-hour, non-violent protest broke out in front of the Boston Planned Parenthood.
Historically, Black women have been fighting for civil rights through their blood, sweat, and tears. They are the structural foundation upon which the United States is built. Women like Sojourner Truth who were part of the Abolitionist Movement exhibited self- sacrifice and resilience during a time when they were slandered through a racist, sexist, and oppressive system. Take for example, slave owners raped many women and had control over Black women’s reproductive
Planned Parenthood is a National issue fighting for abortion access, giving women facing an unintended pregnancy must have access to safe, legal abortion services. Birth control and the fact all people deserve access to birth control and other preventive care, health care equality and the idea all people should have equal access to reproductive health care. For years politicians in Congress and statehouses across the country have attacked Planned Parenthood’s patients’ access to care. But I believe Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide high quality, affordable reproductive health care, to 2.4 million people across the country. When politicians talk about defunding Planned Parenthood, they really mean depriving patients who depend on public

I still remember the first Time I stood before a Planned Parenthood clinic for a few hours to support the right to life. I personally have performed many protesting actions against abortion. I have picketed in front of Planned Parenthood.gone to pro-life masses. attended numerous right to life conferences, and other pro-life actions. I do these things to support my beliefs, and extend support to those who are confused and considering abortion.
Flippen 1 Shaunice Flippen Planned Parenthood is considered a public interest group, which are citizen activist groups that try to represent what they deem to be the interest of the public at large. The most recent controversy in the news today is the proposal by the Republican Party to defund Planned Parenthood for one year, which is expected to fail, which could shut down the government. President Obama and Senate Democrats are willing to shut down the federal government to ensure that tax dollars keep flowing to the Planned Parenthood organization, one of their biggest political allies and financial contributor of millions of dollars to the Democratic Presidential campaign and Party. The taking of life, the extermination of a sack of cells: abortions, no matter what you side on when you hear “Planned Parenthood,” you think abortions. There's a wide misconception that Planned Parenthood does mostly abortion services; and with the Pro choice/ Pro life people debating on defunding them or not this is why we shouldn't defund pph. 3% of Planned Parenthood services are abortions, Contrary to popular myth. The other 97% is for other health related services. Such as Ob/Gyn visits, birth control, mammograms, STD tests, health education programs, diabetes and anemia screenings, physical exams and much more.
She spent about 10 years guiding slaves to flee to Canada. During this act more than 38 slaves were ordinarily disenthrall from hard labor. During this rescue mission “she made most of her trips in and around December when the nights were long and fewer people were out.” (doc B), she was extremely cautious about her acts. Although, all four acts were all as important, the least important one was care-giving.
In 1960, the first birth control pill was put on the market. This was the first time a woman’s reproductive health was in her own control. Ever since the 1900’s women have been fighting for the right to their own reproductive rights (“The Fight for Reproductive Rights”). With the upcoming presidential election the right to obtain birth control and other contraceptives for women could be jeopardized, and taken out of the control of the woman. Thus, the history of birth control, the statistics of how it affects today’s society, why women should have the ability to obtain it easily, and how if outlawed it would not only hurt women, but also the economy are all important topics in the women’s rights movement and very relevant in modern day society.
