La Raza Unida and Brown Berets Unions have been, and continue to be, an important force for democracy, not just in the workplace, but also in the community – locally, nationally, and globally. Unions make democracy work better. Political, labor, and racial unions have been instrumental in the lives of many people in the United Sates, and even more important, they have led to important advances in the American histoy. For many years, the Chicano people were considered minority, the situation was to change in the mid and late 1960s, as many movements developed in response to the oppression of the Chicano community. La Raza Unida concept in California, Colorado, and Texas created a flame that spread quickly throughout the Southwest and other areas populated by Chicanos. By 1970, La Raza Unida existed throughout the Southwest. It held its first National Convention in 1972. The main figures were Jose Angel Gutierrez, Corkey Gonzales, Reyes Teierina, Cesar Chavez, and Jose Angel Gutierrez. In Texas, where MAYO-led student strikes helped lay the basis for the formation of Brown Berets in South Texas. The Brown Berets were a group of Chicano nationalist that rose during the Chicano movement. This group was founded in 1967 by students in Los Angeles and was inspired by the Black Panther Party of the civil rights movement. Like the formation of black power, the Brown Berets were emphasizing dependence of themselves. Having political and economic control over their lives. The group fought for improvement of school conditions, more Chicano teachers and studies. It also fought against police brutality. School walkouts were organized as well as protests at the police station to shine light on the huge amount of killings of Hispanic youths. Even though they were essentially fighting many of the same battles for equality, they never united and fought together. Behnken describes the Mexican-American movement in the 1950s as being primarily focused on fighting “for rights by positioning themselves as members of the white race in order to avoid Jim Crow.” LULAC (the League of United Latin American Citizens) had a very specific strategy for the Mexican-American civil rights movement—the whiteness strategy. This strategy, had been successful in granting other nationalities and races (“Jews, Irish, and Eastern Europeans”) the recognition of being white. LULAC hoped to adopt this approach and eradicate Mexican-American Jim Crow.
In effect of African-Americans fighting for their civil rights, Mexican-Americans formed La Raza Unida when they saw that, “even the most disillusioned Mexican-American begin to dream large dreams again” (372). The civil rights movement for African-Americans helped opened the eyes of Mexican-Americans, and they soon realized that there was a disadvantaged minority. At this time period, they faced “the same level economically, but substantially below educationally” compared to African-Americans (372). “Mexican-Americans is not too much better off than the Negro” (372). After world war two, many Mexican-Americans wanted to be acknowledged for their sacrifice for serving their country.
The book The Making of a Chicano Militant portrays a synopsis on how the background of the Chicano movement in the 1960’s influenced the U.S in many ways. The Chicano Movement in 1960’s helped brought an enormous changes in social, economic and political change, and told the story of the Cristal City incident which helped brought about social justice and equality for Chicanos and Hispanic ethnicity. Political parties were made like the Raza Unida to combat the problem of inequality in the Hispanic ethnicity in schools, politics and in society. Discrimination and inequality were apparent in the Chicano and Mexican race in 1960’s. The call for chicanismo was needed to prompt immediate affirmative action against this inequality.
Before the structured labor society that we live in today, America was a very different working world; one plagued with injustice and grievances from workers across the job sectors. Two organizations, the Knights of Labor and later the American Federation of Labor acted as activists for reform and demanded better standards for working, living, and life for workers. Their strategies and success in achieving their goals were as different as the organizations themselves. Coming from a time of segregation and social divide, the Knights of Labor stood out as one of the most accepting labor unions of the age, which largely accounted for their membership to reach almost 800,000 members during its peak. All workers in a trade were included, regardless of their skill level.

President Jackson brought about a significant number of changes that would later beset the nation in grave peril. Throughout his presidency, and after, his followers were known as Jacksonian-Democrats. They believed in a greater democracy for the common man.
