Core competency eight involves engaging in policy practice to advance social and economic well-being. I think that engaging in policy could consist of multiple aspects of social work. I had to chance to participate in some policy practices through my experience in the classes, and internship. This core competency is associated with two practices that I will be linking to specific artifacts. The first practice behavior is analyzing, evaluating, formulating, and advocating for policies that respond to emerging local, regional, and societal trends to advance well-being. This practice behavior relates to the Great American Smokeout event that I participated in at my internship. This artifact will consist of a flyer that was distributed to patients that were interested in quitting smoking. The second practice behavior is analyzing specific policies and practices and their impact on diverse populations. This practice behavior relates to media presentation I did for my children and family class. The presentation focused on a policy that was being proposed that affected recipients of the supplemental nutrition assistance program.

For instance, it could be time consuming and hard to gauge which policy to promote, or advocate for in social work. There are a lot of policies that could be changed, or enforced to advance the well-being of society. For instance, policies surrounding smoking, and welfare are a few policies that I analyzed and engaged in to promote economic and social well being. I plan to learn and experience more ways in practice where I can advance the well-being of society. I also plan to continue analyzing policies that affect diverse populations, and advocating for policies that relate to emerging local, regional, and societal
Expository Essay #2 Question The Synar Amendment With the aim of reducing the number of tobacco-related premature deaths per year, numerous laws restricting the underage access to tobacco products were enacted by the United States government in the 1990s. The most significant one was the Synar Amendment, which was adopted in June 1992 and afterwards changed the basis of anti-tobacco regulations at both the state and local level. In this essay, I will provide a clear definition of the term as well as state the reasons for choosing it as a source for my research paper.
A policy argument is the major vehicle for communication policy-relevant information and an important source of knowledge in reference to how policies are made and put into effect. The ability to organize, structure, and evaluate a policy argument is crucial to critical analytical thinking. (Dunn, 2012) The purpose of the two policy argument maps is to compare and contrast different modes of reasoning framing policy problems, which arise at all stages of the policy delivery process.

Introduction After completing the value inventory for policy advocacy survey, the results indicated that I agreed with the social work profession 92 percent on the statements presented. For example, the social work profession and me holds the same view regarding transgender and gender non-conforming individuals using restrooms based on their gender identity, congress adapting a minimum wage based on the cost of living, federal funding supporting research in stem cell usage to prevent disease, supporting paid time off for new parents, early childhood education being universally available, funding domestic violence program for both the perpetrator and the victim and promoting syringe exchange programs to stop the spread of HIV and so on. Social work skills, theoretical knowledge and values that has been learnt and obtained through both of my placements has and will continue to be a fundamental component of my emerging social work identity. Work being undertaken, whether that being in a government or non-government organisation, has proven to be at times difficult, as often organisations which state that they provide diversity, social justice and inclusive practice are restricted by funding constraints, hierarchical structures and rigid polices. Personally having had two non-government placements, it has been difficult to be able to first-hand make these comparisons. However, through speaking with peers in my PSAG group and through government agency visits conducted on my previous and current placement, it has reinforced that even though we as social workers are working with such rigid and stricken policies, by using a wide range of practice skills and theoretical knowledge that has been acquired throughout my two

Through the past class periods we have learned about all the different criteria required to meet in order to have a good policy. There are many but if the policy being past can meet as many of the criteria the more likely it is to be effective. A hot topic right now includes required drug testing for those wanting welfare and taking a deeper look into whether this policy will actually be effective. By identifying problems inferred from the needs of a community such as schools and their students, researching possible solution, evidence-based decision making or developing policies to address issues affecting a community or the nation at large could bring social change. Social change refers to the shift in the attitudes and behavior that describes a society (Greenwood & Gunner, 2018).
