Courage: the ability to do something that frightens one, to show strength when faced with grief and pain. Many people struggle to have the mental power to persevere when faced with challenges. As I read the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee I saw Atticus Finch as a courageous character, as he stand up for what is right and just, despite the danger others may inflict upon him.
Atticus shows courage in many ways throughout To Kill a Mockingbird. Firstly, he takes Tom Robinson’s case, a black man accused of raping a white woman, despite the fact he knows it’ll upset the people of Maycomb. By the corner of the post office, Bob Ewell, spits in Atticus’ face for defending Tom Robinson, and instead of retaliating, Atticus decides, “...if spitting

He displays courage by teaching his children to think for themselves, even when it is difficult. Jem feels upset after hearing Mrs. Dubose passed away so, Atticus explains to him what the purpose of his punishment was, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (112). Atticus then reveals she was addicted to painkillers but was determined to overcome her addiction before dying. To help her forget about her suffering, he made Jem read to her. In contrast to Jem's impression of courage as violent and hypermasculine, this perspective reframes courage as persistence through difficult times. While at the playground, Cecil Jacobs questions Scout as to why her father is defending an African American. Atticus elaborates on his unpopular decision to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus tells Scout, "For a number of reasons...The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again" (86). Atticus knows Tom Robinson is innocent, and not defending him would be against everything he believes in. Atticus cannot go against his conscience and feels obligated to do the …show more content…
Atticus shows respect towards Calpurnia by treating her with respect and kindness, despite the racial prejudices of the town. He recognizes her value as a member of his household and as a person and treats her accordingly. For example, he explains to Alexandra that, “...Calpurnia’s not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn’t have got along without her all these years. She’s a faithful member of this family and you’ll simply have to accept things the way they are…” (155). Aunt Alexandra is trying to get rid of Calpurnia because she feels like she is taking over what should be her role in the family. Calpurnia has been with Attucus’s family forever. He notices how much she does for them and is willing to go against what the town thinks and what Aunt Alexandra wants to stand up for what he knows is right. Atticus also shows courage when he shoots the mad dog. Mr. Tate decides he can’t shoot that well and throws the riffle at Atticus. Atticus says, “I haven’t shot a gun in thirty years–” (109). Although he hasn’t shot a gun in 30 years, he decides to shoot him anyway because if he misses there will be a mad dog running free in the neighborhood. Even though Atticus tries to defend the people of Maycomb, they will always see the little things they don’t like about
Even though Atticus does not like guns and has not used a gun in about thrity years he still has the courage to shoot down a dog that was in pain and in need of help. Atticus went out of his way to protect those that lived in Maycomb county with out letting his worries get the best of
Tom Robinson was being charged with rape and everyone in the town was against him. Atticus saw the injustice and did his best to defend Tom. “... if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature” (Lee 75). Atticus is explaining to Scout why he couldn’t leave Tom without any help. Atticus is always looking out for his children.
Throughout the book, To kill a Mockingbird, the author displays and defines courage in many different forms. Atticus Finch, a lawyer and a major protagonist of the book, defines courage to be “when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see through it no matter what”(Lee 149). His words suggest that true courage can come from anything, but once it is begun, that idea or object should never be given up on until the end. Atticus Finch shows courage through his will to see through his case and open a path to let litigation prevail. Scout and Jem Finch show courage through perseverance and the will to never falter.
This builds the idea that one should always do the right thing even when it is hard. Atticus has not shot a gun “in thirty years”; however, when it came time to shoot the dog, so the dog would not hurt anyone in the community, Atticus picked up the gun and shot: “With movements so swift they seemed simultaneous, Atticus’ hand yanked a ball tipped level as he brought the gun to his shoulder. The rifle cracked” (Lee 53). Atticus had put down his gun when he felt God had given him and unfair advantage over other living things. Miss Maudie says, “‘he decided he wouldn’t shoot until he had to and he had to today’’’
Many people in the world today show courage. Merriam-Webster defines courage as the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. There were many characters in To Kill a Mockingbird that showed courage. Three of these characters include Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, and Arthur Radley.
He is a kind man that doesn’t believe in using violence and believes that everyone should be treated equally. That is another reason why he chose to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus thought that Tom deserved a fair trial, and even though he knew that they probably weren’t going to win the case, he wanted to try for the sake of Tom and his family. “‘If you shouldn’t be defendin’ him, then why are you doin’ it?’ ‘For a number of reasons,’ said Atticus.
Atticus says, “I don’t see any harm in letting her go out there. Cal’d look after her there as well as she does here,” and then later says, “She’s a faithful member of this family…” (Lee 182). This shows that Atticus both respects and cares for Calpurnia, which is something that, at the time, would be seen as inconceivable. Black and white people are supposed to be separate, but Atticus has his white children being raised around a black woman.
TKAM Essay Courage could mean a man with a gun in his hand, but real courage is something you fight for what is right whether you win or lose. Atticus takes on the case knowing he may not win but does it anyways because it’s what he feels is the right thing to do. No matter what other people may do or say he does it anyway.
Later, Mrs. Maudie explained that Atticus is not prideful of his talents, but is “civilized in his heart”(130). This shows that weaponry and talent would not be the first words Atticus would think when defining courage when explaining his kids the real definition of it. Another example that talks about courage involves the Finch’s old and ill tempered

The most important or relevant time that Atticus sticks up for his belief that Calpurnia deserves the utmost respect no matter her skin color is when Aunt Alexandra tells him she thinks Calpurnia shouldn't live with them and be around the children. Atticus says: “Alexandra, Calpurina’s not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn't have got along without her all these years’”
