1. The CASE STUDY is an example of one research method used in Sociology/Psychology. What are two other research methods used in Sociology?
The two other research methods used in Sociology other than case study are observation and self-report. Observation is when any phenomenon (observable event) is studied, for example sleep studies and observing apes in the wild. Self-report is a tool/instrument designed to sample attitudes or behaviours such as, survey, questionnaire and rating scale.
2. Describe some of the ways that Genie was deprived during her years in captivity.
Genie’s environment for the first eleven years of her life from 1957-1970 were utterly deprived. In a dark small bedroom of a suburban house with only a cot and potty chair

There was a limit to how much Genie could learn, as shown by the critical period theory. Her mental capacity stumped because she struggled to develop fully, and her mental age was extremely difficult for doctors to detect or determine. Because of that and how unique Genie’s case is, there were complications in how to care for her. She was a child, but she was also treated like an experiment because research constantly got in the way. Nobody knew how to deal with her rare situation. Since there were problems with how to care for her, who was caring for her changed constantly and after getting to live with her mum for a while, she then went into foster care, where she was abused once …show more content…
Case studies are usually able to be generalised which makes it easier to understand and work off of. But because of how extreme Genie’s situation is there has never been another situation like it. A lot is possible, and professionals did not know if Genie could ever learn language. Another issue with the case is the ethics involved. Genie’s time in care and how she was treated throughout her life out of confinement can be questioned by ethics. It is doubted whether Genie was considered as an experiment versus a child. Many people wanted to look after Genie for the wrong reasons by using her as a test subject and almost forcing her into society to become human and normal. Even though everyone knew that Genie’s situation is one of the worst cases of child abuse in the U.S. Genie only needed a home, with love and care but instead she was used for scientific
She was too young to defend herself and the foster care parent failed to meet her needs as a child who has lost her mother. Ashley continues to want her mother because on visits her mother promises her that they will be reunited again but never
n research methods, every researcher uses a procedure or a means of measurement to collect data. For example, three types of basic measurement collection are self-reports, observational, and physiological. Each method has their pros and cons in research. Depending on the research you are conducting these methods of measurement can either guide you to great discovery the pro, or skew your data making it unreliable the con. Observational measure is the method of measuring behaviors by directly observing subjects (Leary, M. R. (2011).
Sadly, they were still too poor to afford formal child care and too wealthy to receive public assistance. Her mother had arrangements with a neighbor, which in turn led to Tina's traumatization. Tina was not neglected or mistreated by her mother, she was victimized because she lived in poverty and had no access to better resources. Unfortunately, this is the perfect example of why poverty is a risk factor for child
In that time she has left the abusive relationship, obtained employment, stable housing, and has engaged in parenting services and mental health services to increase parenting skills and address
Nancy was a very protective of her children. When Adam was about five he got an IEP. They eventually moved to Connecticut. About 15 years
The three different research methods are naturalistic observations, surveys, and case studies. A naturalistic observation is when someone is observing people or animals in a natural environment or set. A naturalistic observation would be good to use when you observing people in a a cafeteria. For example under appropriate conditions, you can observe the amount of people who naturally order healthy food verses unhealthy food. Naturalistic observation are good only if you take the time to observe people in their natural environments.
After her petition to become her foster mother was denied, Genie moved in with Rigler and his family, where it is believed she made some successful breakthroughs in learning to draw, sew, study sign language, and take part in speech therapy. Curtiss would frequently take Genie outside and expose her to the world. After four years, the Riglers’ could no longer care of Genie because the grant used to take care of her ran out. The funding was not supplemented again, and Genie then moved to several foster homes, and even lived with her mother for a short period. The foster homes were often abusive, a seemingly common theme in Genie’s life, which regressed Genie’s development.
Who claimed that she was an unfit mother because she was only 17 years old when she had given birth. “I don’t know how one could fully heal from that trauma,” “said the woman, now 41”(Press, T. C. (2022, September 21). Therefore it is very evident that even still today our foster care system is extremely
her father hung his self in prison when she was a baby. Aileens mother left her and her brother to their grandparents when she was only 4 years old. The grandparents legally adopted Aileen and her brother on March 18, 1960. The kids were no safer being with them. Aileens grandpa would sexually assault her and beat her.
While isolated, Genie had no sense of self, had no ideas of social norms and her only agents of socialization were her parents. While under the care of the hospital and others, she was able to learn and express herself in ways that she was never allowed to before. Finally, able to speak, Genie became able to pronounce simple words. After years of learning, Genie has never been able to fully communicate and has never grasped using questions and sentences. Genie’s influences and insights are accurately described by the sociological concepts
During this stage, children start to interact more with peers in school. Through interacting with other kids, children will not only practice their social ability but gain a sense of initiative through planning things themselves as well, thus to feel confident in their ability and decision-making. It is important for children to explore and plan activities by themselves to achieve the feeling of control, yet Genie was not able to decide or try anything in her early childhood. On the contract, she got beaten by her father whatever she did. Therefore, combining the autism and the lack of confidence she expressed after the rescue, we can assume after the fails of the previous development, Genie was apparently not an initiative child.
As Genie cognitively progresses throughout the years after rescue, she gains the abilities to respond to others and interact with certain objects. Even though she did not properly develop her self identity during her childhood, there is evidence that she is beginning to conceptualize her sense of self during her teen years. Feral children, such as Genie, lack a self concept impairing their development. However, in order to solve this, they must require the agents of socialization, immerse themselves in culture, and undergo socialization methods, such as Mead’s “Stages of the Self.” Through constant nurturing and therapy, Genie would have a chance to develop her sense of self and recovery from her previous, feral state.
Her husband isolated her from others and her child, which caused her condition to worsen because she felt that she couldn’t care for her family as she
“Secret of the Wild Child” is about the experiences and development of a child that was in solitary confinement for thirteen years. Genie was the name they pinned on the child due to the similarities of being kept in isolation, then suddenly brought out to human society. During the first few months of life, children need to be exposed to other humans who will care and love for them because this creates a set of ideas and attitudes about who they are as independent beings (Brym et al. 2015,96). Genie’s isolation raised the question whether it was too late for her self image to emerge.
Genie was found at age thirteen by a social worker, after Genie’s mother reached out for services. “ The
