Being that his parents had different beliefs, it benefits Antonio in a way that helps him grow as a person. Antonio would not be the person he is at the end of the novel if it was not for Ultima, who helped him find his identity and make him the strong man he is towards the end of the falling
One thing is definite. No matter what, everything seems to fall into place eventually. The concept of fate is really interesting and intriguing. You just happen to hit every red light and didn’t make your appointment on time only to hear about how the building was engulfed in flames or you decide to visit a different coffee shoppe one day and meet the love of your life. We never know what will take place during our lifetime.

First of all, Antonio develops the theme, no one can choose your destiny for you, destiny chooses itself. One example of this is when Antonio has his dreams about his future.
In Bless Me Ultima, Antonio is continually having internal ambivalences as his mother and father bolster his confliction. That’s until a woman named Ultima enters his family life. With her entering Antonio’s family life and his own, he begins to have a deeper connection with the curandera. As his relationship develops with Ultima, Antonio begins to gain more insight on Gabriel Marez (his father) and Maria Luna (his mother), as they are complete opposites of each other.
At some point in our life, there would be a time to ask ourselves: what is the true meaning of destiny, the word always associated with fate? Can it be controlled by humans or changed? Is it something that is decided already by the heavenly forces or is it a work-in-progress? The definition of this word is subjected to changed from person to person due to the differences in culture, religion, personality, character, and such. However, regardless of how a person defines the word, they will experience a chain of events leading to the discovery of their own fate.
In the novel Bless Me, Ultima, the author Rodolfo Anaya presents the theme that growing up involves the loss of innocence. The novel is a coming of age story, in which the main character, Antonio Márez, struggles with the conflicting ideas of religion versus culture. The different variations of the conflict throughout the novel lead to his growth and his maturity. The author uses occurrences such as Lupito’s death, the Golden Carp, and the arrival of Ultima to demonstrate Tony being able to set aside his idealism and begin to lose his spiritual innocence.
Contrasting Duality: The Role of Opposing Forces In Personal Growth Ignorance is born from the absence of exposure to different perspectives, ideas, and information. A single static viewpoint clings to preconceived notions and prejudices. As Antonio from Rudolfo Anaya’s novel Bless Me, Ultima encounters different beliefs, his own ideals are challenged. These conflicting sets of beliefs that shape his worldview - Márez vs. Luna, the Catholic Church vs. magic, and right vs. wrong - result in Antonio’s personal growth. The multifaceted nature of Antonio’s coming-of-age journey arises from the acceptance and understanding of contrasting views.

Loss is a fundamental point of formation in the lives of many. Unlike many other forms of hardships, the loss of a loved one leaves what can feel like a herculean task of healing through grief. In loss, people can develop or regress into people that see the world in an entirely altered perspective, and become all but recognizable to those around them. In Bless Me Ultima, Antonio loses Narciso, Lupito, Florence, and Ultima and death and grief plagues his early life and his journey through the book. Each death has a way of shifting Antonio‘s perspective and the way he interacts with himself, other characters, and his idea of spirituality shows his development through the loss that he faces and how he steps into the character he is at the end
The 1997 science fiction film ‘Gattaca,’ directed by Andrew Niccol delves into the concept that the human spirit will prevail despite an uncaring fate. Protagonist Vincent Freeman represents powerful notions of perseverance and humanity, and through his victory epitomizes humanity’s triumph over science. Niccol implies that all children deemed Valid do not possess the trait of the human spirit and consequently have no true dreams nor aspirations. Niccol infers that when one knows their predetermined fate, they will not strive to accomplish anything further. When a Valid does not accomplish their predetermined fate they struggle under the burden of perfection.
Fate and Free will are both two ideas that have a questionable outcome. Whether one has free will or fate the outcome for both is unknown until the end. In the Matrix, the computer generated world which humans "live" in, it appears that fate is key. The computer system is prewritten, predesigned, and already programed. However, free will starts to take place in the minds of the individuals who begin to escape.
Some people might believe that one’s destiny is determined by the decision that one makes while others might believe that destiny is already written and there is no way of changing it. In the movie Taxi Driver, the audience is able to see how Travis at one point believes both theories at different points of the movie. Travis was honorably discharged from the Marines and is a lonely man suffering from insomnia. He tries to take control of his life and make his own destiny by looking for a job as a taxi driver and find a companion. Well things did not go according to Travis plan and results in him thinking that destiny is already written for him and that he must go fulfill what destiny has chosen for him.
