On October 28, 2007, 23-year-old Stacy Ann Cales Peterson, of Bolingbrook, Illinois was reported missing by her sister. Stacy was the fourth wife of Bolingbrook Police Sergeant Drew Peterson, who was 30 years his junior. They married in fall 2003 and had two children together, a son born in 2003 and a daughter born in 2005. The disappearance of Stacy raised suspicion of foul play among investigators, family and friends based on the fact Drew Peterson’s third wife was found dead just three years before (FindLaw, 2015). On March 1, 2004, the third ex-wife of Drew Peterson, Kathleen Savio, was found dead in the waterless bathtub of her home. Although Kathleen and Drew Peterson were divorced at the time of her death, there were previous allegations of domestic abuse and were called to the Savio residence 18 times for domestic related events. In addition, Drew Peterson’s outlandish and inappropriate behavior garnered more suspicion of foul play in both the disappearance of Stacy Peterson, but also in the death of Kathleen Savio. He seemed to taunt police and make jokes with media during the investigation. On November 13, 2007, Will County authorities approved the exhumation of Kathleen Savio for two new, independent autopsies, that were performed by Dr. Larry Blum and Dr. William Baden. Both pathologists concluded Kathleen Savio’s death was a homicide, and not an accidental drowning. On May 7, 2009, Drew Peterson was indicted with first-degree murder of Kathleen Savio. Finally, after years of preparation, jurors listened to 4 weeks of testimony and evidence from pathologists, investigators, and witnesses.
