Unit 1 Discussion Post – Biology in My Life Today My children are the most important parts of my life, and their health and development are vital to their survival. It is my responsibility to ensure that those are successful. Children are the product of the reproduction process, and they do not stop development after evicting the mother’s womb. Existing within the womb is only the beginning. Not only does a mother have to make sure she eats and drinks healthy, but she must be sure to exercise, take prenatal vitamins to give the baby what it needs, and make/keep doctor’s appointments. The process of taking care of infants, or children, begins with the reproduction process. A women’s body freeing an ovum (egg) and being fertilized by a male’s spermatozoa (semen). It then moves to the woman’s uterus once it is fertilized and begins the development process. One must maintain themselves in a healthy manner to have a successful pregnancy. This includes weight, nutrition, blood sugar, and hydration. For example, if a woman does not healthily maintain her weight gain, she faces a bigger threat of premature birth and low birth weight (Encyclopedia Britticanna, 2018).

In the case of a safe delivery and healthy newborn, a woman must nourish her offspring through her own milk, or formula if she chooses, only hours after birth, though this is more for learning experiences for the baby on how to eat than to provide nutrition. A child must learn to suck so they may eat to keep nourished and hydrated. If one does not learn to eat, they will more easily get sick, lose weight, face the possibility of hospitalization and even death. The nutrition from a mother’s milk is much healthier for a child than formula because it provides the child with antibodies to assist them in fighting off infections within their own

The weaning development begins the first time your baby takes food from a source other than your breast, that means your child is ready to have formula milk from a bottle or for example mashed fruit. Weaning is the progressive replacement of breastfeeding with other foods and ways of nurturing. As your baby grows so will their nutritional needs, the food that you will give them it will help the grown and develop, that’s why the department of health suggested exclusive breast feeding for the first 6 months of life with the gradual introduction of solids food until the age of 2 years and under. So it’s important to include iron rich food in your babies diet e.g. red meat or green leafy vegetable.
I am interested in furthering my education because of my deep fascination in biology and how it affects our future. Ever since the first science class I took in 7th grade I knew that the topic would be incorporated in my post-secondary education in some fashion. Having the ability to understand the inner workings of nature and the relationships between molecules, organisms, and the environment have always interested me. I am a senior who is at the top of my class in AP Biology as of now, and the dream of being involved with the subject is beginning to come true. I have been accepted to a university who is #2 in the nation for my major--zoology--and I also have some experience in this field already from a handful of anatomical dissections, macroinvertebrate
But mothers (54%) who received conflicting advice from different people or those (16%) who were confused with the advice given had made inappropriate timing of weaning (P<0.00, R2=0.07) (7). Patients need or background is likely too much challenging especially for whom have not updated their knowledge in nutrition First, patients from minor group, or lower SES or poor previous experience regarding nutritional care may need more sophisticated and
Motherhood, is one of the most unforgettable milestone in women’s life and a sense of achievement
A mother’s right to feed, bond and nurture her baby by breastfeeding is considered the best start of life. According to American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Statement (2012), exclusive breastfeeding should be the only nutrients the baby needs for the first six months of their life, then continued breastfeeding for up to one year or longer with other foods
As every health professional and the World Health Organisation will tell you, the best type of baby milk is breast milk. However, for various reasons, breastfeeding is not always possible. The mother or baby may be ill after the birth, or perhaps the baby had to be in an incubator for a while and could not feed. Maybe the mother didn 't manage to breastfeed, or her work situation didn 't allow it.
The maternal bond is considered the strongest bond two humans can have. Since birth, a child is enamoured with his mother, the gentle soul who brought him into the world. Nothing compares to a mother’s unconditional love, as she forms an inseparable and essential bond with her little angel. Of course, not every child is as fortunate. If the parent that brings an innocent child into the world neglects their duties, the child faces adversities.
In attempts to encourage breastfeeding it was found that many women discontinued breastfeeding due to a lack of support during the early months of trying to breastfeed. (Grummer-Strawn p.107). This response from women is why it is vital that proper, supportive postpartum care is given to both mother and child. Successful breastfeeding mothers require “early breastfeeding initiation, no formula supplementation during the hospital stay, rooming-in, on-demand feedings, no pacifiers, and provision of information about breastfeeding upon discharge” (Grummer-Strawn p. 107). These six points are representative of everything it takes to initiate and stabilize breastfeeding.
“Can’t we just take soda and beer?” “I don’t think mom is gonna let us drink those,” Coleen whispered back. “And if you want to be on her good side, you’re going to drink your fermented drinks like mother’s milk.” “Well, I was a formula baby, so,” Aiden whispered. “I wouldn’t know much about mother’s milk.”
In high school, I was a Biology Olimpiad student, I love Biology and I love tutoring younger students. I always had that love for babies and children, may be it’s because I never had a younger brother or sister. In 2009 I won a gold medal on National Biology Olimpiad. At that moment I recognized that hard work and discipline will lead you to the place you want to be. While studying Biology I always found human anatomy and physiology fascinating, how every second our immune system is protecting us from microorganisms and parasites, and how these cells are trained to be self-tolerant or how our brain rewires and heals itself and can compensate it’s damaged part, etc.
Feeding in the hospital, right after birth, helps to keep a healthy and trusting relationship between the mother and the infant. There is a great deal of learning in the first few hours of life. Latching as soon as possible is the best and most advised way to prevent from having issues with latching in the future. There are some cases where the milk ducts can become plugged, something that happens if the baby is not feeding very well. Breasts can become infected.
Because breastmilk takes on the flavor of foods eaten by the mother,[8] these foods are especially good choices.[9 ] Nestlé's Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS) of 2008 indicates that few American babies are fed baby food before the age of four months. Mother’s knowledge regarding complementary feeding time is inadequate and practices are inappropriate. Majority of them are not aware of the current recommendations and proper way of doing it. Correct information and guidelines about complementary feeding is not reaching the target population.
The arrival of a new baby, especially the first always marks a new beginning for a mother. It comes with a lot of challenges more so if the mother is less knowledgeable about baby care. Take such as cleaning the baby for the first time, or feeding, it is not easy. The baby is still fragile and slippery and needs a special care. But if the mother is not ready for all these, or maybe, does not have any knowledge on what to do, the baby’s life might be endangered since the baby needs a special care which only the mother can give.
Quiz #15,16,17 List the ways men and women can prepare for healthy pregnancy? Even though pregnancy is more depend on women health, both men and women nutrition can affect fertility and possibly the genetic contribution they make to their children. So it is important to maintain the health and behaviors of both men and women. They can achieve this by establishing the following habits: Maintain a healthy body weight: Both underweight and overweight can cause problems with fertility.
