Everyone has serious life experiences that have an effect his or her life choices. Being such, he or she has a different perspective towards people and society. How so does the society shape person’s perspective? One of my life experiences that greatly shows how popular public opinion has affected society which made an impact on me. From my experience, I will compare the time with two literary piece, how my experience correlated with them, and provided proof explanations with quotes.
Body image and acceptance were related in experience in which society that affected me. The general image of males and females have changed because of social media. Men are supposed to be muscular, toned and have a six pack; meanwhile, women are supposed to have

Doctor Miami is a plastic surgeon who helps people feel better about themselves; to my knowledge, it is the same effect as in the poem Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy. His snapchat is a video recording of his surgery on patients. After viewing his snapchat, I realized people of different ethnicities and origins go to change some aspect about themselves. Most body augmentations or reduction surgeries are influenced to look like the image of a celebrity which is more pleasing to public view. “The girlchild was born as usual” is the first line of the poem that refer to every women that walks in for beauty modification. Most of the patients, majorly women, are naturally beautiful and do not need silicon breast or butt lift to become more appealing. Evidence is found in the quote, “Everyone saw a fat nose on thick legs” which brings up a negative connotation. Majority of people who go for surgery are either unhappy with their looks or someone made them feel uncomfortable about …show more content…
Doctor Miami does an exquisite job at what he does, but usually the same people come back over and over for new procedures. The idea of a perfectly symmetrical human being is a logical fallacy. This piece describes the man as “Clean favored, and imperially slim… and glitter when he walked” meaning the man was gorgeous. The people returned to his clinic to try to correct all the problems he or she have with his or her body. Even though I am intrigued at the sight surgical methods and apparatuses, it depresses me that some people have to feel as comfortable and confident as Richard Cory to go under the knife. I could see these people being put to sleep, so a knife can remove the fat and skin off unwanted area while blood trickling down the operating table. It is a very gruesome sight especially to see needle and suture placed in a person’s abdomen. At the end of watching his snapchat story, I realize that surgery is not the means to be one with the body. Even with corrected flaws, outer beauty does not provide true happiness; an example of this statement is shown in Richard Cory, “...[he] Went home and put a bullet through his head. ”or in Barbie Doll where “she cut her nose and her legs….[and ended up] In the casket displayed on satin she lay [and people finally claimed her to be pretty]”.There are several ways to better oneself and surgery is not the way. The author also describes how much appearance is important to us. In what point of time did we allow our society to tell us what is and is not beautiful. People worried about what others would say or losing friends because their teeth are not perfect or they are not skinny enough. Your appearance should not take away from the person you are on the inside. We entrust dentist and plastic surgeons to cause pain to our bodies to meet societies expectations of beauty and spend thousands in the
Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld, tells the story of a girl named Tally Youngblood who is only several weeks away from having a life-changing surgery completed; the people that undergo the operation have their faces and bodies modified to look conventionally attractive. It’s revealed later in the book--by former members of the “Pretty Committee”--that the surgeons alter the patient’s personality and reasoning as well. At the very beginning of Part, I there read a quote from Yang Yuan, taken from the New York Times; “Is it not good to make society full of beautiful people?” Westerfeld’s story explores the implications of a society where people are socially conditioned and made to think that they are naturally ugly; at the age of 16, they are made “pretty”, as stated earlier.
Atul Gawande author of the nonfiction novel, Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science, writes in the second section of his book that mystery fills the lives of doctors as the medical world are constantly changing. Doctors are often expected to have answers for questions that they do not yet possess. Gawande illustrates his thesis using a doctor’s experience with a severely obese patient.. A gastric-bypass is a serious operation that significantly restricts the amount a food a person can consume; the underlying outcome is extreme weight loss. However, the question is why a particular person, in this case “Mr. Caselli”, becomes grossly overweight?
One of the biggest parts of this novel is the idea of “Uglies” vs. “Pretties and other members and groups of this culture. The entire novel these two main groups are segregated so they do not interact with each other. “Uglies got to be pretties, and pretties got to be celebrities, and celebrities got to rule the world–or so it seemed to the young uglies anyway” (Westerfield 29). The use of these words represents the physical and social divisions of the two groups. By doing this, Westerfield creates a way to explore the possibility of a person not wanting to receive the surgery.
During this school year, the question “Does society shape the individual or do the individual shape their society?” was explored in our reading. In book that we and I had read like Romeo & Juliet, Night, and My Life Next Door there has been times that society has altered their life or have they altered the way society is viewed. For starters I chose specific books to help me answer this question. I selected two books my class read and one book I read on my own because they all kind of connect. All of these books have in common are the themes.
One thing that could change this though is if everyone knew what they were really going into once they have the operation. Although there are many themes in the book “Uglies”, the one that stood out to me is that we don’t all need to look pretty to be pretty. During their
Society’s Impact on an Individual Jacob Rees-Mogg once made a strong announcement, “People coming together as a community can make things happen.” This statement demonstrates how when a group of people within a society come together; a person can be affected in a helpful way. One can see the influence that a society has on an individual every day in the outside world. The impression can be seen with the support of a friend or teacher, the caring demonstrated by companions, or even within your own family. Society can impact an individual in a positive way as seen by the actions of many within the Olivet Eagles Football team, the message of “The World is Not a Pleasant Place to Be” by Nikki Giovanni, and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
The poem Barbie doll by Marge Piercy is about a little girl who grows up only to kill herself for not living up to society’s standards. The speaker shows how she had a normal childhood and was happy playing with here baby dolls and toy stove. However, during puberty, her body changed and everyone noticed. She was criticized for her “fat nose and thick legs”. She tried to change by dieting and exercising, but soon tired of doing so.
The only thing is that in the book’s society, it is a law that you must get surgery to become pretty, but in the real world people can choose to get it to make themselves look better. “Surgeons can reshape the appearance of body parts through cosmetic surgery.” (Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery) This just goes to show how terrible and different the Uglies society
This led her to apologize for her body, something no one should ever have to do, as well faking a smile, dieting and exercising. After faking it for so long she was worn out and as Piercy put it she, “...cut off her nose and legs...” (247). This is a very real scenario, especially in this day and age more and more girls are opting for surgery just to fit into what is considered to be “beautiful.” That may be a way of them choosing their identity but, it really shows how much of a societal impact there is on all of
Also, cosmetic procedures have increased by 39% over the past five years (from 2011) with surgical procedures up 17% and nonsurgical procedures up 44%(ASPS statistics). It shows that young women are willing to put themselves in danger because they feel the need to meet society's expectations of beauty. When going into cosmetic surgery, there is a risk of death or side effects that people are aware of, but still undergo the procedure. All because we live in a world where first impressions are made by how we look and thanks to magazines advertisements they set the “ideal” look for us and we all try to reach that look no matter how it
Social media is a powerful source in today’s society, 81% of the population in the United States alone has set up a social media profile. Many use the media for useful things, like educational opportunities and business inquiries. Although there are people who may look at it more in a concerning aspect. Many people today view the social media as a stage where they are judged and told what the real way to look and act is, more specifically, body image. Social Media has a negative impact on body image, through creating a perfect view physically which affects someone mentally, targeting both male and female, and turning away from the real goal of social media.
1.0 Introduction 1.1 Background of the Issue This report is written to find out the pros and cons of cosmetic surgery to people as well as how much cosmetic surgery has benefited people both positively and negatively. Cosmetic surgery procedures have been performed back in the early 1800s, which means it has been in existence for centuries as what history has suggested. Besides that, the development of cosmetic surgery states that it started to gain popularity since the 1970s and 1980s. Cosmetic surgery can be defined as the operative procedure as improvement of appearance is the principal purpose (Medical Dictionary for the Dental Professions, 2012).
"Today, hundreds of thousands of aesthetic plastic surgery procedures are conducted each year" (Petechuk, 2014, p. 4). People do not think twice about having a procedure done because they have enough money. People believe that insecurities can be fixed to make themselves feel better. Unfortunately, people all over the world are having surgeries done. Most might not think this is unfortunate, but some do.
All people have reason for what they doing. Nowadays, the problem in people is they didn 't want to listen to explanation they just want to judge and contented for what they see. Taking plastic surgery is not that bad unless you do so. Don 't look only for the negative side of a thing; look also for the positive
