People are so distracted by technology that they isolate themselves. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, technology is used as a distraction a lot. It badly affects relationships and also affects communication with others. Nowadays people don’t even pay attention to the real world because they are so invested in their phones. According to an article, “The evidence Harris collates suggests that smartphones and digital technologies are fundamentally reducing our ability to pay attention. We can’t concentrate or bring ourselves to stop getting distracted, as these technologies are literally designed to keep your attention,” (Technology is Stealing Our Time). This is evidence to show that technology is distracting people from the real world. People aren’t paying attention to the real world because all their attention is towards technology. This is shown in Fahrenheit 451 through Mildred’s seashells. In the novel it states, “And in her ears the little Seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight, and an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk and music and talk coming in, coming in on the shore of her unsleeping mind,” (Bradbury 24). This is how Mildred uses these little Seashells. They are like headphones and she uses them to tune out the world for an electronic ocean of sound. This is a type of technology that is used today to keep people from paying attention. Airpods are what most people use nowadays. People will have them blasting and not listen to anything around them. People just get too distracted because they’re so glued to technology. They don’t see what’s actually going on in the world.
