Animal Captivity Bears don 't normally ride bikes, tigers don 't normally jump through fire, and elephants don 't normally stand up on their back two legs. Laws that protect traveling animals are not enforced enough to make a difference, and are highly ignored. Circuses should not be allowed to capture wild animals for entertainment purposes because the animals are abused, the populations are decreasing, and the animals don 't have enough freedom. To better understand why eliminating animal captivity for entertainment purposes is the best thing to do, someone must think about the opposing viewpoint. Most argue that the eliminating animal captivity for entertainment purposes is more humane. However, there are regulations administered by the …show more content…
With the regulations that are set for proper treatment of animals, the animals are very well taken care of. In addition, many worry about what will happen to the circuses if the animals are taken out of it. However, it is cheaper to properly take care of an animal and let it perform than it is to pay a fine for improper care (Payne). If it is cheaper to properly care for the animals, the circuses will bring in more money to better the show. Even though these factors are great, eliminating animal captivity for entertainment purposes is still the best choice for the innocent animals.
The most important reason why circuses should not be allowed to capture wild animals for entertainment purposes is because the animals are abused. Around the world, "[...] circus[es] [...] [have] been cited for violating the [...] standards of care set by the United States Animal Welfare [...]" ("11 Facts About"). Studies that are produced have made the horrific treatment of animals hard to ignore. The AWA has cited many circuses for having scraps of metal that can cut the animals, and wood that can easily cause splinters near the animal 's cages. The Ringling Bros Company had to pay the AWA $270,000 for putting the animals in a

In addition, many feel circuses should not be allowed to capture wild animals for entertainment purposes because the animal populations are decreasing. According to a study shown, "The Asian elephant, [...], is an endangered species with less than 40,000 remaining worldwide" ("Why World Elephant"). Knowing that there are not a lot of elephants left in the world, circuses continue to capture them and wrongfully care for them. The elephants will not have any chance of coming back from being endangered, especially since the circuses capture them. It is also shown in the study that, "[...] populations have decreased by seventy percent because of human-elephant conflict" ("Why World Elephant"). In the circus habitat, elephants are not taught how to care for themselves like the ones in the wild are. Because they are taken care of for so long by humans, they can not live on their own in the wild. If the elephants are released after being captivated for entertainment, they will die from not knowing what to do. The AWA does not enforce the humane animal rights, and that results in populations
Deborah Nelson's article “Ringling Brothers Circus’s Treatment of Elephants is Cruel” says more should be done to help hurting Elephants. Nelson states Elephants are being beaten and dying for the way they are being treated. Even when the Elephants are clearly sick, they are still being beaten to perform in shows. Nelson says for years nothing has been done. Videos have been released of the beatings and still nothing.
Many deaths of elephants occur in the circuses. Ringling Bros. was charged with violations of the Animal Welfare Act after the circus forced Kenny, a three year old elephant, to perform even thought the animal was obviously sick. A veterinarian checking on the elephants that same day said he “should remain in the barn,” an hour after Kenny’s last performance, he passed away. Circus owners care about fame and fortune, not about the health of the
Animals once worshipped like gods are now abused and used for entertainment. The circus and SeaWorld, two places common for entertaining children, display their animals in grand shows, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg of the truth. Hidden, are the cruel practices, immoral punishments, and unhealthy psychological effects that most of the animals experience. There is a reason why animal rights activists protested. There is a reason why Sea World is ending its world famous Orca whale shows.
Imagine how you would feel if you were taken from your family and your home, moved to a completely new climate, and forced into a small enclosure with no room to run, and nothing to do other than walk in circles as people stare, laugh and take pictures of you. You would never be free again, and you would die surrounded by concrete walls, lonely and sad. This is what zoos are doing to thousands of animals around the world, locking them up into captivity and using them for our entertainment, and it needs to end. I think zoos need to be banned, and that it should be illegal to take wild animals into captivity. The first issue that I have with zoos is the fact that these animals are kept very far away from their natural climate and habitat.
Endangerment of Asian Elephants Visiting your nearest zoo for a family day and bonding with your family over the views of wildlife is supposed to be fun right? Have you ever thought about how these animals got in the zoo? Zoos are for entertainment purposes, whether or not it affects the species. Not only are elephants captured for entertainment purposes, but for human resources as well.
“Hold back the abuse,” “Someone needs to demand actions,” “The circus abuses animals,”- these may all be phrases that one has heard countless times. However, people 's actions prove otherwise. In fact from the United States, the circus receives roughly 10.36 million people every day (The Statistics Portal). This includes families that take their young children to watch these shows for “entertainment”, not knowing the amount of damage these performances cause to these innocent animals performing. The commonly expected effects that have ensued in the cause of animals in the circus living in a state of depression include violent addressing and the removal of animals from their natural habitat.
Imagine living in the perfect home, the place you’ve always lived with friends, family and thousands of miles to roam around and explore. Only to wake up in a cage with the eyes of humans glaring and the flash of cameras reflecting off the glass wall. It looks like home, but the grass is fake, family and friends are gone, food only comes at certain times and the only roaming there is to do remains in the area of the closure. This is the life of an animal that goes from being wild and free to captive in zoos and aquariums. Zoos and aquariums are institutions that capture live animals and keep them in cages or large enclosures for public exhibition.
Did you know that Seaworld’s parking lots are bigger than the areas where they keep their whales? This and other examples are why animals should not be held in captivity. Animals should not be held in captivity because of the inhumane treatment, lack of education for kids, and loss of freedom. The first reason why animals should not be held in captivity is because of the inhumane treatment.
To illustrate, zoos and animal circuses aren't needed to fulfill someone's happiness. There are many other activates that do not involve anyone suffering or being forced. “ Instead of switching exclusively to human performers—who perform by choice rather than force— the 146-year-old institution continued to bully animals” (DeRose 1). In addition, Fur from animals is a trend in the fashion industry, but animals should not have to suffer to have their fur used to be shown off. “Several years ago, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to ban the use of bullhooks on elephants, and the City of West Hollywood banned the sale of fur products” (DeRose 2).
Being held captive leads animals to have abnormal behaviors that unfortunately can lead to the deaths of people. Although zoos and sea-parks claim they are all about educating the public and conservation we know its
Those animals do not having any freedom as they get trapped in the cage for 24 hours per day. They will only be release for performance or training session. Thus, this action truly against the ethical treatment toward animals. The community should treat them better rather than hurting them physically and mentally because they also sentient beings. To overcome this issue, the government should ban circus from using animals.
To start, Zoos make animals in confinement hurt each other. According to Spanishzoos.org animals hurt each other. when they are in confinement together. This is bad because if the animals hurt each other they could kill each other or severely injure each other. animals even get ill because of zoos.(Spanishzoos.org).
As stated in “Do elephants belong in zoos?”, zoos not only fund research on wild animals but also contribute to reducing the conflicts between them and people, for example, by planting crops that frighten elephants away and exploring the cases of poaching that could affect their mortality (Cohn 717). Moreover, most of the scientific matter on elephants such as facts about their communications, reproductive physiology and behavior were originally gathered on the ground of captive animals (Cohn 717). In his article, Borrell expresses the same opinion. He states that zoos serve as “a living museum” that help scientists to find necessary information on species for the research, and these facts can be used to prevent the extinction of the animals living in the wild (Borrell 9). Besides, zoos are crucial for raising money for conservation programs by giving people firsthand wildlife experience that increases interest in wild animals (Borrell 9).
Did you know the first zoo to charge an extra fee did it so they could help the animals? This supports my reasoning that there shouldn't be laws about animals in captivity. Even though some people don't agree with me saying there shouldn't be laws about animal captivity I think there shouldn't be laws because zoos treat the animals better, they have good security, and they save animals. First of all zoos treat animals better than before because say lions if they roared at us we would roar back to them but now we don't roar at them. Also in zoos there used to be in a cage with only grass and straw now they live in a cage that looks like there habitat with real trees.
This leads to many concerns from the public on the physical and mental impacts of captivity on the wild animals. This essay examines the advantages and disadvantages of zoos to lead us to a possible conclusion whether it is ethical to place animals in captivity. We will also examine if zoos have the best possible facilities to keep animals in captivity. Body One of the advantages of having zoos, is to provide protection to some animals that are endangered.
