Banning books is a form of censorship. It is restricted content that a group with authority does not want to be made public. The group with authority could be a school that wants to protect its students or a government who decides that the content is not suitable for the people. An example, of a banned book is Animal Farm. When George Orwell completed the book he could not find a publisher to print it because of its criticism towards the USSR. English publishers stayed away from the book at first because they were told that it would upset the USSR, which was their ally during that time. Later, however, the book was published by a British publisher, Fredric John Warburg. He then faced harsh criticism from British people. However, he did not regret publishing Animal Farm since it has sold millions of copies, and it has been translated into more than 70 languages. The book could be banned by a parent who wants to protect their kid from violent images, or it can be banned by someone with a high authority such as, the government. Most books are banned in a specific country or region because the content does not match their beliefs. Another reason a book could be banned is because the author mocked a leader by representing them as a pig, for example. The reason Animal Farm is still banned in North Korea today is because the leader, Kim Jong-un, doesn’t want the people to read about the rebellion of the animals against their leader, the farmer.
