Banning books is a form of censorship. It is restricted content that a group with authority does not want to be made public. The group with authority could be a school that wants to protect its students or a government who decides that the content is not suitable for the people. An example, of a banned book is Animal Farm. When George Orwell completed the book he could not find a publisher to print it because of its criticism towards the USSR. English publishers stayed away from the book at first because they were told that it would upset the USSR, which was their ally during that time. Later, however, the book was published by a British publisher, Fredric John Warburg. He then faced harsh criticism from British people. However, he did not regret publishing Animal Farm since it has sold millions of copies, and it has been translated into more than 70 languages. It was immediately banned in the USSR and other communist countries. The book, Animal Farm, made fun of Soviet Union leaders such as Joseph Stalin. In 2002, the …show more content…
The book could be banned by a parent who wants to protect their kid from violent images, or it can be banned by someone with a high authority such as, the government. Most books are banned in a specific country or region because the content does not match their beliefs. Another reason a book could be banned is because the author mocked a leader by representing them as a pig, for example. The reason Animal Farm is still banned in North Korea today is because the leader, Kim Jong-un, doesn’t want the people to read about the rebellion of the animals against their leader, the farmer. Kim Jong-un wants to keep the people in the dark about the outside world and how it really works. He has successfully brainwashed the society from outside influences such as the book Animal
Would you rather read a book of your choice or read a book that has been banned. ”Often challenges are motivated by a desire to protect children from “inappropriate” sexual content or “offensive” language. The following were the top three reasons cited for challenging materials as reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom: content was considered to be sexually explicit, contained offensive language, and the materials were unsuited to any age group.” Banned books give people a sense of curiosity and excitement, which is why more and more people want to read banned books; to see what the hype was about.
“Books usually are challenged with the best intentions-- to protect others, frequently children, from difficult ideas and information” (Scales 163). A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, restricting the access of others. Due to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, students and other concerned citizens, most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection.
Book banning is not as common as it is made out to be in the U.S., but it does put a restriction the constitution’s first amendment. To ban a book, in the U.S., from a public or school libraries, for offensive content, a challenge must be made against the book. A challenge can be made by anyone but of the challenges made between “1990 and 2000, there were 6,364 challenges reported... sixty percent were reported by parents, fifteen percent by patrons and nine percent by administrators” (Schools and censorship: Banned Books). Most of these challenges sent to the American Library Association do not get accepted and officially ban the book.
Not only does banning books violate authors' rights, restricting them from freedom of speech, but it also violates the students' rights to "receive and express ideas" (Webb). Many people who think certain books deserve to be banned do not agree with or dislike the themes present in the books. For example, as of 2020, the top five reasons for banning books were sexual content, offensive language, being unsuited to the age group, religious viewpoints, and LGBTQIA+ content. The authors who decide to have these themes in their book are utilizing their freedom of speech. If someone were to take that away, it would be unconstitutional.
Banned Books Censorship is the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, or other that is considered obscene. Censorship was used back in the 1800s with fascist states. Like censorship, book banning is the prohibition from a book being published and circulated by a government authority. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is a novel that has been challenged and banned. The Glass Castle is about a girl named Jeannette growing up with a mentally ill mother and a drunk father.
Book banning is a problem that plagues our society. To learn more, letters were sent to multiple libraries to assist in researching the book banning process. Initially, letters were only sent to Medomak Valley High School (MVHS) and the Warren Free Public Library (WFPL). A letter was later sent to the Maine State Prison library where it was forwarded to many more schools in Maine. The responses received included information on the book banning process and how librarians feel about book censorship.
For as long as writers have written books, people have been wanting to ban them. Before the printing press, only a few handwritten copies of each book existed. If leaders deemed a book ‘inappropriate’ or ‘undesirable’, they burned the few copies that existed, ensuring people would no longer read the knowledge
The First Amendment states, “…abridging the freedom of speech or of press…” When a book is banned, it is denying the freedom of an author to express him or herself and is denying a person the right to access that book. Although banning books is the freedom to express an opinion against the book, it would hurt the author that wrote the book and make them feel inferior. Taken from I Am Very Real written by Kurt Vonnegut, “You have insulted me, and I am a good citizen, and I am very real.” In this, Kurt Vonnegut is showing how when one of his books was banned, how offended and hurt he was by that one action. The people banning the
Banning books hinders younger generations learning abilities massively. Most people are different in the ways they work and the things they want their child seeing. The only problem with this is that this starts controversy and unnecessary drama around younger audiences. And many audiences of older people do not like things found in books so they challenge in communities to get them banned.
Either way those are all to teach us something. When you ban and censor books inside those books are the fears you hold and that you don’t want to see. It is because of that reason why today there are so many social problems in our world. Not banning books wouldn’t solve all the social problems in the world but it would take us into the right direction. Keep people from the truth of banned books is the same as lying to them.
There are countless reasons that everybody should know why books are being banned all over the world! One of the reasons is that parents do not want their children to be exposed to inappropriate topics. Moreover, some books discusses topics that people object to like dark arts and homosexuality. However, there are also reasons why books should not be banned. When children enjoy books, it improves their vocabulary, and it teaches them life lessons.
Banned Books are books that are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means. Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech.
In the end, this only causes harm to people and their lives. Banning books is one of the most horrible ways of legal control over others and should never be allowed
