In the television series Bates Motel, the main character suffers from mental illness. This mental illness is called Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. Dissociative disorders are mental illnesses that involve disruptions or breakdowns of memory, awareness, identity and/or perception. Dissociative Identity Disorder involves the disturbance in which two or more distinct and separate personality states (or identities) control an individual 's behavior at various times. While the person is under the control of one identity, they cannot usually remember some of the events that occurred while other personalities were in control. The alters, or other identities, may exhibit differences in speech, mannerisms, attitudes, thoughts, and gender orientation. They might even have physical differences such as vision problems, or allergies. A person with Dissociative Identity Disorder could have anywhere from two alters to one-hundred alters. “The average number is about 10.” Alters are usually stable over time, …show more content…
“Approximately one-third of individuals affected complain of auditory or visual hallucinations.” While the cause of this illness is unknown, statistics show that DID occurs in 0.01 to 1 percent of the general population. “It is generally accepted that DID results from extreme and repeated trauma that occurs during important periods of development during childhood.” The fact that Dissociative Identity Disorder appears to run in families is suggestive of a hereditary trait. DID is an extremely serious mental illness that occurs in all ethnic groups and income levels. Although, women are nine times more likely than men to be affected by this illness. Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: depression, suicidal tendencies, disorientation, headaches, anxiety, and/or eating
His parents' marriage was fraught with tension, and they eventually divorced when he was a teenager. He struggled with feelings of loneliness and isolation, often retreating into a fantasy world where he had complete control over others. As he grew older, these fantasies became more violent and sadistic. While there is no single cause for Dahmer's crimes, it is clear that he suffered from severe mental illness. In addition to his diagnoses of borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia, he also exhibited symptoms of dissociative identity disorder (DID), which can cause people to feel disconnected from their emotions or surroundings.
Sufferers are not generally violent but can become very scared and upset during episodes. Symptoms include intermittent psychosis, experiencing hallucinations and having unusual beliefs (delusions). Other symptoms such as lack of motivation and becoming withdrawn, are generally more long-term. Both genetic and environmental causes are thought to be responsible. Both prosecution and defence agreed that Brady had narcissistic, paranoid and antisocial personality disorder, but his defence team claimed he no longer shows signs of being schizophrenic or
Another disorder would be PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder. At the time of these events it was about 20 years after a war had taken place, the King Philip’s War. The witnesses of this horrific event could have been left with PTSD. The survivors/witnesses of this war could become hysterical in a time of stress. Any one of these illnesses could have played into what happened in
Jesus’ Son, written by Denis Johnson is composed of eleven short stories, which employ a sober narrator to recall his wild young adult life. The result is a book that not only thrills, but explores the absolute lows of life as well. The characters in Jesus’ Son are constructed by the narrator to amplify the traits he possesses, as the reader knows him only as Fuckhead. Furthermore, Jack Hotel’s character in “Out on Bail” is merely an alternate persona of the narrator and does not exist outside of the him. The text suggests Fuckhead suffers multiple symptoms associated with a dissociative disorder, such as dissociative identity disorder.
Kevin Wendell Crumb is a very complex character in the psychological horror film, Split written and directed by Manoj Nelliyattu "M. Night" Shyamalan. His behavior is very unpredictable and even perilous at times. On countless occasions Kevin switches from personality to personality and leads various different lives. One of his personalities, Barry, is a fashion designer and artist. Another one of his personalities, Hedwig, is actually a nine-year-old child.
Michael Boag once said that “Using an alter-ego for emotional protection is like wearing an armour plated chef’s apron at the front, while being completely naked at the back.” Mr. Boag makes an interesting metaphor which explains what and why people may use an alter-ego. In Allal and Psycho it is learned that this is one of the reasons that Allal and Norman Bates use the alter-ego. Which helps us see that the personality and the symbolism of past experiences of an individual makes the them more vulnerable to their alter-ego. Which make Allal and Norman more vulnerable furthermore easily conquerable to their alter-egos, so they loose the body at the same time all control.
The disruption of marked discontinuity in sense of self and sense of agency, accompanied by related alterations in affect, behavior, consciousness, memory, perception, cognition, and/or sensory-motor functioning” (American Psychiatric association,2013). To be diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, a person will have at least two, and possibly more, distinct identities or personality states. Each will have its own pattern of sensing, thinking about and relating to self and environment (Bexson, 2005). These identities will repeatedly assume control of the person’s behavior, which is what the narrator possesses in this film when he falls asleep, and dissociates into Tyler Durden. One important similarity between the film Fight Club’s dissociative identity disorder and the real one is the interpretation of a stronger, more confident personality that takes over the narrator.
In Kenneth's case he was unaware of his actions during his time as Steve under hypnosis, we was also oblivious when asked about the crimes that he had committed. People with dissociative Identity disorder have the onset occur in early
They knew!- they were making a mockery of [his] horror!" (Poe 94). Delusions happen when a person believes that certain gestures or actions are specifically directed at him or her. The narrator draws conclusions thinking the police can hear everything going on around him, but it is just his thoughts in his head of all the guilt he has from killing the
The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation delivered a statement discrediting the stereotype of dangerous DID patients and condemned how the film was made "at the expense of a vulnerable population that struggles to be recognized and receive the effective treatment that they deserve" (International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation,
One of Freud’s theories is that the “Id – Ego combination dominates a person’s behavior until social awareness leads to the emergence of the superego, which recognizes that
Although Macbeth possesses a plethora of mental health disorders Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is the most dominant of them. The Bipolar Depression (Which closely links attribute to PTSD, although the manic stage of a bipolar disorder is usually not obtained while some are experiencing PTSD) and PTSD traits and symptoms that are slowly built into her character are caused by the delayed stress she experiences after Macbeth murder of king Duncan. After the murders are committed, Lady Macbeth and her husband are immediately consumed with guilt. Many of the victims of PTSD fall into a period of confusion and guilt similar to Macbeth after the murder of his kinship, leader and king. “His wife thinks that 's a foolish thing to say, and when she notices
In Philip K. Dick’s novel, A Scanner Darkly, he uses different objects, and the scenes will the medical officers to develop the relationship between split personalities and the self. Substance D is a mind altering drug that causes “a split between the right hemisphere and the left hemisphere...”
Most of the DID that we see in the movie stems from the narrator’s discontentment with his career and where he has ended up in life. The main cause of DID, however, is widely believed to stem from a severe or traumatic experience during childhood. The movie gives no pretext of this ever occurring, and instead makes it appear that the narrator’s other identity was created as a way for him to cope with his anxiety. This is far different from nearly every true-to-life account of DID, in which the individual diagnosed usually has experienced some form of childhood trauma. One of the most famous examples, that of Kim Noble, the woman with 100 personalities, involved repeated abuse as a child.
