Americans in the world today tend to be either very healthy, or quite the opposite. There is not much of a happy medium when it comes to the health of United States citizens. With focus on the many different aspects of everyday life, some people neglect to take care of their bodies which leads to health problems. A major problem that is becoming more apparent in our country is obesity. Around 300,000 deaths per year occur due to obesity, as stated by the National Institute of Health (Obesity: Facts, Figures, and Guidelines). Between the increasing rate of obese Americans, the risk it is putting our country at, and the additional health problems that can come with obesity, it is important for people to take care of themselves before it is too late. Although obesity can run in peoples genes, that is not always the case. Some suggest that if people get gene tests, obesity will be able to be avoided (Collins 479). It is important for people to take precautionary measures to avoid the increasing rate of the epidemic. In order to promote healthy lifestyles, employers and insurances are offering incentives (Walsh 23). Although being offered incentives may help people live healthier lifestyles, it should not be the way that America should be dealing with this epidemic. Restaurants and grocery stores especially should be putting in effort to advertise and sell healthier options rather than extremely fatty and sugary food. Fat Land Book Review Every new year brings with it a host of new pressing issues and challenges that our nation must confront and overcome, and though economic and global concerns certainly deserve a large part of our attention, as a nation we have almost entirely forgotten or ignored many problems that have been plaguing us for decades. Chiefly among these concerns is the ever growing obesity epidemic, which has seen a dramatic increase over the past several decades and looks to be continuing its trend into our near future. In his book, Fat Land: How Americans Became the Fattest People in the World, Greg Critser delves into many of the significant causes behind this staggering increase in girth our nation has been experiencing, and offers
When most people think of America, especially when not originally from America, they associate it with obesity. Obesity causes “fat-shaming” by others, as well as public health arguments. Saletan gives more than enough information on how, when, and what is happening worldwide about obesity. Although he does not give a solution, he still made an eye opening experience while reading this essay. Obesity is now happening worldwide. Yes I said it, worldwide according to Saletan. “Egyptian, Mexican, and South African women are as fat as American”, he claims in the second paragraph.
It’s to no surprise that obesity is an epidemic in America and is continuing to grow at an alarming rate. Statistics say that more than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese and being overweight is harming the nation by worsening the health burden, raising health costs, and undermining productivity (Greenhalgh). Sadly the responsibility for this epidemic is mostly put on Blacks and Latinos, who have the highest percentage of obesity. Latinos more so have sparked this for concern due to their large numbers in the United States and something must be done about this to help bring down these numbers and help the overall population’s health. Latino Obesity Epidemic Because Latino’s make up a huge number in the United States

Obesity not only has disgusting physical effects, it also will have negative changes to a person’s personality. Even though many people are aware of the problems obesity brings, there still has been at least a 50% increase in obese people since 1980. Obesity will cause extreme health problems and possibly death if people don’t change their diets, activity levels, or emotional needs towards food.
The high demand for medical care also increases the financial burden on the families and therefore the community as well.
