“In nothing was slavery so savage and relentless as in its attempted destruction of the family instincts of the Negro race in America. Individuals, not families; shelters, not homes; herding, not marriages, were the cardinal sins in that system of horrors”-Fannie Barrier Williams. Therefore, the purpose of slavery in the United States was to take power from others because of their color and how they felt about African Americans.
Slavery began 1619 in Virginia in a North American colony called Jamestown. When the Dutch introduced the first kidnapped African Americans to America. First the colonist had no model for slavery but they when they realized they could lose their labor and they held African Americans illegally and made they worker without rights. In 1641 Slavery was legalized and In 1660 English King Charles the II proclaimed to bring Africans to America. England herded other humans for profit. They had set up a cruel system of abuse. That divided the nation. Most slaves lived and worked on small plantation farms. On plantations they enforced the “Gang system” which was used to involve a continuous day of work. Slave Auctioneer’s would put up poster for the next arriving ship and describes some of the slaves on the ship such as the built, age, and skill. Bidders would show up to the auction and bid the most money on the slave they want and if you bid the most money you get the slave. If that slave has a family most likely they are taken away because bidders most of the time don’t want t whole family. When they are being auctioned they put up the slave in a pen and mothered in tar to make the look healthier. After they are sold to the winning bidder they brand the slave then the bidder owns that slave until he feels like he should sell him or her. There were two main types of slave Auction which is One: Those that sold to the highest bidder and Two: Grab and go
