Learning How to Listen In the modern culture and society, humans often take silence as something awkward and to be avoided at all costs. It is almost like every American has been brought up learning that quiet spaces in conversations are taboo and that no one enjoys an individual who cannot hold a conversation. The issue with this concept is that people are talking way too often and the words coming out of their mouth more often than not, hold absolutely no merit. In James Owen’s book Cowboy Ethics, he describes ten principles to live by and the most significant one on the list is “Talk Less and Say More”. There are a vast amount of things that can be taught through this principle that are often overlooked and unappreciated. The idea of …show more content…
Nearly every individual has been wronged or hurt by the words of a friend or family member. The person who spits venom in a fit of rage may apologize, however sorry cannot fix everything. The words that humans speak are set in stone and it is a natural flaw of humanity that nearly everyone speaks without thinking how it can affect others. For example, jokingly bullying someone is still a poor choice as the victim stills feels bad about the joke. Those jokes are pointless, yet the person at the end of the joke has to question if it truly was a joke, or if there is actually something wrong with them. These kind of negative thoughts are planted like seeds into one’s mind and with every seemingly harmless joke, the he or she begins to slowly see his or herself as worthless. Everyone’s words hold value to another person, so do not speak unless the words coming out have merit and are fully meant. It is not difficult to think before speaking and to have respect for others. This concept of talk less, say more, has slowly disappeared in American culture and it is essential to being a decent human being. Imagine how positive and happy everyone would be if they only received uplifting and kind
The “victim” should explain how he or she genuinely feels to the “offender.” Also, the victim must make certain he understands the offender’s words clearly before drawing undetermined conclusions. In reality, the person that made the offensive comment may not have even realized that the remark was even the slightest bit distasteful (Cole 312). If by chance the offender rejects the argument that the victim is disclosing, both individuals should consider what the other is saying and then list their separate concerns (Cole
To Be Kind In preschool, and throughout elementary school, I had always been taught that “if [I] didn’t have anything nice to say, then [not to] say anything at all.” This phrase is something that I, and all of my peers, have heard essentially my entire life. Preschool and kindergarten are the grades in which students learn basic manners and skills that they will use as they grow older and become an adult. Teachers believe that they are teaching their students to be nice, however, I see it more as being taught to be tolerant of others.
When people lash out with anger they are often labeled as too sensitive and people will dismiss them and their opinions sometimes. The offender also might not have meant it in the way it was taken. Therefore , if they are publicly shammed and did not mean to or realize what they did was offensive this might cause the opposite effect that was
if those so called jokes were turned into a compliment or praises to the person's heritage the world would be a nicer place. in society we have created a lot of negative meanings for things that should be positive a positive mind gets more work done in an hour than a negative mind can get accomplished in days the power of positive thinking is outstanding it is majorly understated and it needs to be embraced throughout the
I have built an invisible boundary between my mother and I that poisonous words cannot penetrate. I have learned to ignore words aimed to kill, and to respond out of compassion. When people spew poison, it mean they are afraid and intimidated. They are similar to rattlesnakes that encounter a larger predator, they must protect themselves from external
Often times we do not always comprehend that it’s happening. A simple sentence that someone says can really impact the other person. They could be thinking about that one thing you said, for weeks. Words hurt, some people can’t shake it off as easy as others. The soccer players at Fremont High found it fairly easy to shake words off that were being assaulted towards them because they knew they had the backup of their teammates.
In the book A Practical Companion to Ethics, Weston describes the three most popular ethical theories: The Ethics of Happiness, The Ethics of the Person, and The Ethics of Virtue. After studying the different approaches and discussing them in class, I have found I resonate the most with the Ethics of a Person. I have found this theory emphasizes the importance of human personality and equality, and asks us to treat others as such rather than objects. I interpreted the theory to mean that we all born the same and have the same worth, no matter how different we are individually. It asks us to be aware of each person's unique beauty, and to treat them respectfully, as you would like to be respected in return.
I also expects that learning will enable me step outside taken-for granted assumptions and narrow framings and to re-form issues in fresh and productive ways. I believe that there is a significant difference between the concepts taught in schools and those happening in the society because society or community is very vibrant and hence students should always be ready to face new challenges (Maria Montessori
Communication is an inevitable aspect of life. It is an event which happens almost every second of every day. Communication is an act of giving and receiving of information—desires, needs, perceptions, knowledge, etc.—of two or more persons through orthodox or unorthodox methods which can either be intentional or unintentional (de Valenzuela 2002). There are numerous types of communication and one is interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication is one of the communication fields that several studies have focused on.
It shouldn’t matter how we choose to learn the lecture, material, or lesson, but as long as we understand the concept to the fullest capacity can fit. According to Dr. Wu, “To change behavior, it 's important to give children brief and powerful messages several times and consistently” (Wu), as he explains how the child 's brain is still developing and needs brief and powerful messages consistently. Which theater is the perfect remedy for what Dr. Wu is explaining. Everyday people walk by, not noticing the small things that make up life and so it 's easy to take things for granted. The importance of education is to empower one’s mind of knowledge but does it matter the process of how you achieve that?
Some things to remember when practicing good listening skills, are no one can listen when two people are talking, and a good listener listens to understand and not to respond. Working on communication skills can help form effective
Relationships are always progressing and never stable at any point in life. For example, relationships can be like a roller coaster, you never know which way relationships can end up. Relationships of all types can vary such as sibling relationships, couples, parent to child, and many more that can show any sort of relation to an individual. There are many factors that can help with maintaining a successful relationship(s). Five characteristics that can primarily take a role in any relationship to be successful would be dialogue, acceptance, self disclosure, recognition, and rituals.
Task oriented listening intently is to understand the information so you can make A on the test. One or two of these guidelines can be very helpful to have a good listening habit. The importance of having an interest in conversations plays a key role. If you are listening to, be knowledge of the information, it can be good to build a defense. If someone actually wants to learn, they will ask a lot of questions till they grasp the information.
Basically, you should listen twice as much as you talk. Besides making the speaker feel valued, it also makes you, as a listener, seem reliable and courteous. Most importantly, listening more than talking helps us learn and grow as individuals, because you can learn from what others have to say, and are also exposed to various thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Through effective listening we learn to ask better questions, and are given room to read and understand body language, which can be very beneficial to all types of relationships. Listening also helps you understand your responsibilities across various levels of your life, and improves the overall quality and communication in your both, your social and personal
Schools are the second place after home where students’ behavior and future educational success are shaped. At schools there are many elements or factors that can influence the teaching and learning process that may take place. Rasyid (2012) stated that there are four perennial truths that make the teaching and learning process possible to take place in the classroom. If one of these is not available, there will be no teaching and learning process, though the learning process itself may still take place, they are: (1) Teacher, (2) Students, (3) Material and (4) Context of time and place. All of them are related to one another.
