The Eureka Stockade was a rough time for everyone. It was a time for rebellion and a time for showing who the miners’ and troopers were. The key figures on the miners’ side were Peter Lalor and John Basson Humffray but on the government side were Robert Reid, Governor Hotham also Henry Seekamp. They were fighting for everyone’s rights on there side. Peter Lalor was elected from the miners’. Governor Hotham was elected by the Queen to look after Victoria. The rebellion came about because the miners’ had to pay 30 shillings for a licence. The licences were a way for the government to tax the diggers easily. Licence fees had to be paid even if a miner didn’t find any gold. Less successful miners’ found it very difficult to pay their licence
