Hamlet Essay
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, a common theme expressed is the idea that appearances may not coincide with reality. The truth and question is can we ever honestly know another person? I think the answer is we can never truly “know” another person because we are constantly presenting false images of ourselves to the world and you think you can know someone but they always prove you wrong in the end. The biggest thing about Appearance vs. Reality we see today is the falsehoods on social media. Social Media shows us how people change, they are not 100% themselves all the time, and it shows how people are different, it expresses their comfortability, and you

Reality. In scene three Ophelia and Hamlet are talking and after Hamlet says he never loved her she says “I was the more deceived” When she says this she knows Hamlet is lying and plays onto the appearance vs reality through lies. Back in scene one Hamlet and Ophelia have an interesting interaction and Hamlet says and asks her “Are you honest? Are you fair? For the power of beauty will sooner transform honesty from what it is to be a bawd… I did love you once,” Hamlet is asking if she actually is pure and beautiful in appearance vs the reality of how beauty corrupts character expressed towards Ophelia. Hamlet is also very insulting in his words toward Ophelia but says he used to love her and also plays onto Ophelias being used and played by men. In scene one the quote was made stating “I have heard of your paintings too, well enough; God hath given you one face, and you make yourselves another…It hath made me mad.” this is claiming the deceitfulness of women who are given one face but use makeup to create another. This is one of many things that add to Hamlet’s “madness” and contributes to the theme of appearance vs
In The Catcher in the Rye, one of the first things you learn about Holden is his disapproval and hatred for people he considered “fake.” Anyone he deemed fake was not worth his time and wanted nothing to do with. He describes fake as someone who puts on an act, or another face, to fool the people around them. In this quote Hamlet is accusing Ophelia of the same thing. He calls her out for putting on a show, for convincing everyone that she was innocent and unaware, but really she know what she are doing.
Primarily, Hamlet provides hints towards his apparent madness through his seemingly insane dialogues. This is most prominently displayed
In “Hamlet” William Shakespeare uses the character Ophelia to get to the men around her. She’s portrayed as a weak, trusting woman that tells her father and brother everything. They see her as a virtuous, unsuspecting, loyal daughter. Hamlet sees her differently. He sees her as an object, easily disposable.
Hamlet Character deception is a common characteristic that has and will be a reflecting characteristic in literature for centuries. In many of William Shakespeare’s tragedies, deception, whether positive or negative, is being used to mislead, to protect characters, or to hide a crime or future crime. Analyzing why the characters are using deception against each other is very important to the reader’s understanding of the work as a whole. In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, He uses Hamlet’s deception of character and also the character’s use of deception towards Hamlet to carry out the overall theme of the tragedy. The theme that is represented, is that in able to get malicious revenge, you must be able to act as if you are someone different than your true self while in turn, being able to deal with others deceiving you.
Hamlet Journal 1 In William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, the main character Hamlet, appears to be insane, but his mistrust for his uncle and desire for revenge drives him “To put on an antic disposition on— / That you, at such times seeing me, never shall,” (I.v.181). He succeeds in convincing almost everyone around him that he is truly a mad man whose only cure is execution; however, he is enigmatic and ambiguous. By having an appearance of insanity and madness, Hamlet is able to use it to his advantage to achieve his own purpose of ridding his father’s murderer.
Madness was a reoccurring theme throughout the play and these were the two characters which portrayed it more than others. In Act 3 Scene 1 Hamlet encounters Ophelia and calls her “fair”, creating a calm atmosphere. Later Hamlet rapidly changes his attitude, raging towards Ophelia and telling her “Get thee to a nunnery” implying he loved her once but now denies her love. Hamlet was acting mad in front of her in an aggressive manner and says “God hath given you one face and you make yourselves another”, Hamlet is suggesting that all women are two faced. Hamlet finds out that this was a setup of Claudius and Polonius to spy on him, so they can find out if he is truly mad.
In the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, the main character Hamlet experiences an irrational behavior of madness throughout this piece of work. While reading this play there is a question that crosses the reader’s mind of, “Is Hamlet going crazy or is he going mad?” The reader can often wonder this because of the way Hamlet starts to act as soon as his father dies and the actions and choices he makes leads the audience to think that he isn’t normal and that even though he is going through a hardship in his life that the way he reacts still is not how a normal person would react. Throughout this play, his irrational behavior is an important role in the play because it is constantly leading the audience to an important question of if his
Appearance Vs Reality Claudius, the king, appears to be a loving ruler, but in reality, he is a murderer who has taken the throne by killing his own brother, King Hamlet. Claudius presents himself as a caring stepfather and king, but in reality, he is consumed by guilt and fear. He states "O, my offence is rank, it smells to heaven; / It hath the primal eldest curse upon't" (3.3.36-37), revealing his conscience is tormenting him and his guilt is so grave that it even has a smell that can reach the heavens. Polonius also presents a false image of himself as a wise and loyal counselor to the king, but in reality, he is a meddling and deceitful courtier. He uses disguise and deception to spy on his own son and daughter, ultimately leading to
Hamlet views Ophelia as a naive and ignorant girl who is nothing but Polonius and Claudius's puppet. This was revealed when Hamlet said "God has given you one face and you make yourself another. . You jig and amble, and you lisp, you nickname God's creatures and make your wantonness your ignorance." (III, i, 143-146) In this quote Hamlet knows that Ophelia is spying on him for Polonius and Claudius.
The question of whether or not Hamlet was insane is of a never-ending debate. Was he always crazy? Was he always faking it? Or was he somewhere in between? In this paper I will share three different views and provide my own interpretation of Hamlet’s sanity.
In Act III, scene i of The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, readers will come upon Ophelia’s soliloquy. After Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have failed to find a reason as to why Hamlet is acting in a peculiar and mad way, Claudius is persuaded by Polonius that the reason for Hamlet’s madness is the broken romance between Hamlet and Ophelia. To prove this, Claudius and Polonius plan to spy on Ophelia’s meeting with Hamlet. During their conversation, Hamlet denies ever having loved her and curses her. Ophelia is left fretting over his sanity.
Saying this, Hamlet’s behavior towards Ophelia is crude, rough, and full of anger. Despite Hamlet’s harsh treatment towards Ophelia, he really did love her, but because she was not his main focus, the
Hamlet does not value Ophelia 's feelings he belittles her. In Hamlets defense this is the way he was brought up to treat women, during that time this was a common way to treat a women. Even though in today 's society it is not at all ok to treat women with such disrespect. He also likes for everything to go as planned and this may result in why he can not have a stable relationship with a woman. This also causes him to have many stumbling blocks in his life that causes some emotional pain
Hamlet brings to go on and talk about how much her and how beautiful she was. He then tells her he doesn’t love her, but it can be assumed that he said so because Hamlet knew they were being watched by Pulonious, asking Ophelia where her father was. Hamlet has shown many instances where he would fake an act just to confuse others. Another instance is when he quotes “never doubt I love” (II.ii.127). He tells her despite all the false things happening around them, his love for her was a genuine.
Not just Hamlet, but everyone wants to know what each other is thinking. Appearance versus reality plays to their thinking of one another. One of the first instances where appearance versus reality takes a role is when the queen and Hamlet are speaking to one another. It is first stated by the queen, “It it be, Why seems it so particular with thee?” Hamlet responded with, “Seems, madam!
